Length of Prep
West Australian Racing
How long do most trainers keep their youngsters in work for? We have a 2yo that was broken in for 5 weeks last year and then sent for a 8 week spell. He's second prep went for 25 weeks without trialing. He was gelded during that time but stayed at the stable in work but then went shin sore.
Edit - Has anyone had a longer first prep than that?

were they using the 'pay up and shut up' method of training ?

second prep...6 months!!
wake up, silky...
SILKY, SILKY, SILKY :-O
What you are saying is, 25 weeks training lets say at $2000 a month(which is cheap). =$12.000.
And you have not got to a trial. Surely there has been an explanation from the trainer or manager of the syndicate. Six months and no trial with no explanation is TOTALLY unacceptable mate.

Whoever is sending you the bills to pay should be able to explain exactly whats going on(if they haven't then talk to them!!!)...6 months is a long time for a young horse to be in work, and generally too long if it hasn't been trialing or racing.
How long was it in work for at the point it lost it nuts?
:-? doesnt sound right on the surface however bit hard to say without knowing exactly what was going on.
If it was me I would have a few questions - tbh would probably have asked them weeks ago :-??
Bad luck Silky, hope it comes back in 5 months and wins 7 in a row for you...then again it'll need to too cover the 25 week training bill....
;))
Oops, only joking mate...maybe there is a good excuse, but I'd like to hear it cos i'd have no way to explain to any of my owners a 25 week prep and no trial....
:-??

gelding is normally a straight forward procedure..u often see horse race 2 or 3 weeks after.
no psychological problems.. its like having a tooth out...
Farkin Bullshiit Falc, I got gelded 8 Months ago. My nuts blew up like an Islamic suicide bomber.
Worst pain I have ever been in my life. And I have MAJOR psychological problems over it

the horse is trained at Ascot
Normal for us is breaking in 6weeks approx, then spelled for about 10/12 weeks during.which time is gelded.
Then back to work, with everything going well, trial 9-10 weeks.
Anything outside those approximate guidelines you should be asking questions

having said all the above it can happen. Maybe it is just a communication deficiency on behalf of the trainer.
I mean I normally allow 5 weeks for breaking in, but this year I have had one done in 4 weeks and another one is in its 4th week and probably will go for up to 7 weeks. But I know why, have visited and talked through the issues and understand totally why the time is so long, and the other so short.. Flat rate for breaking so no extra costs.
And I have had horses that have had up to 20 week first preps with no trials. But I knew why, and it was all okay and understood. I reckon there appears more of a communication issue than necessarily a "delinquent" trainer issue....but maybe I am working on the glass half full theory as well.
Whoever sends you the bill (trainer, major owner, syndicator) make sure you ask them, and not accept a flopsy crap answer.. Irrespective of who they are. It may be the hardest piece of crap horse they have ever had anything to do with!!! And as a shareholder you should know that stuff.

I thought so too, I was told it would be broken in, then spelled & back to trainer.
