Inaccurate Race Call

Last race yesterday was very ordinary. Darren Mac calls the official third horse finishing 6th. Not for the first time the leading group are well past the post by the time he calls the third and fourth incorrectly. Yes a big moment for trainer Wilson landing a winner on his 78th birthday but surely the priority is to call the finish particularly the first four over the line as accurately as possible. If other comments on things such as birthdays are required then surely at the end of the call is a more appropriate time to do so.

    Great Post Slip! I could name you 100's of calls that he does'nt know who ran 3rd etc etc!Clearly a horse was 1/2 lgth 3rd and he has'nt got the balls to call it!

    "coming around the turn, 350M to go and Sonny Biscay shook them off and raced away, it's Sonny Biscay in full flight, led by three .................. "

    I was listening in the carpark whilst waiting for Sam to arrive. I laughed when Sonny Biscay only managed to run fourth.

    Not the easiest job around, add to that you have to make the call interesting... i doubt anyone has gone through their race calling career without a mistake or miss judgement! .

    did he rave about SM when he came out and won the last 3 races a week later..i think not, just said it was a great achievement, or words to that effect, which it was. :-?

    Whenever someone criticises the race callers you can rely on someone, usually Wes, to say "if you think you can do better...."

    So, should you never criticise a surgeon when they butcher your operation? Will someone then say "you have a go. See if you can do better".

    Most of us aren't race callers. He is; we are entitled to expect excellence. He is the premier caller in a population of two million people.

    I agree with Slip rather than the other comments. If you are listening only and have novelty bets don't rip up your tickets.

    There is definitely an agenda on here though by some who take any chance to bag DM. In saying that race calling has historically been a job for life and that encourages complacency. We are entitled to expect the best person for the job is in fact doing the job, not waiting for their turn.

    Firstly Amyquil is correct this is not about 'if you reckon you can do a better job'. We all appreciate it can be a taxing job.

    Secondly your comment re the thread is not true Falcon if it was then there would be a lot more previous comments on the forum. We all know callers will make mistakes and if they gets it wrong in a tight finish or a blanket finish yes naturally you can understand it.

    The point I make is that his error is because he has focused on the birthday comment and by the time he gets back to the finish (when they are approx 200 metres past the post) he has not called it accurately... taking his eye of the ball so to speak. This is not the first time this has happened.

    As previously mentioned.. after the call is the time to mention birthday connections etc if need be. Obviously it is different for callers today because they don't have the extended time to spruik after a race as the next brick in the wall to wall racing is about to get under way. Is this the the reason that Daz Mac throws in these comments as horses cross the line?

    For those that oppose my view on this occasion I recommend you have another look at the replay and remember the call is for Australia and at times Asia and there would be many that would not be happy with a third horse being called sixth due to a birthday announcement.

    Whether it is Darren or any other caller... if a racecaller wishes to spruik that's fine but please prioritise calling at least the first four home as accurately as possible.

    In light of the sudden injection of pace into staying races after criticism on PTT, stand by for ALL horses called in finishing order, as well as the horses scratched on race day, those that didn't accept =))

    Well I have as much chance of getting a race call right as I do of successfully removing your haemorrhoids.

    Why can't they be compared? They are a specialist skill, and I can't do either of them.

    Apparently your Dad was a caller. Are you telling me that what he did could be easily done? Just give it a go? I don't think so.

    Darren has talent but he gets distracted. Whether it's Mr Wilson's 78th or Amelia Park or congratulating Wes for tipping the roughie or plugging some stallion, it all gets in the way of punters getting correct information.

    If you can't deliver that to the best of your ability, why are you there?

    Don't think I've heard Mark Shean go down that road once.

    If you are watching a race the last thing you should be doing is listening to the caller, if you cant see where and how your horse is going, what the hell are you doing punting?

    Listening on the radio is entirely different, its then you need him to give u a description of what is going on in the race, whether he calls 3rd place wrong is not going to change the true result, all in all Macca is the very best in WA and will be for some time yet

    People do listen in on the radio and through apps and on their small smart phone screens.

    They need the picture painted and they're entitled to it.

    Unlike some other city tracks we have one caller per race, all punters/connections/fans/staff in RR studio etc need to be considered.

    I want to know who shot Sonny Biscay? Macca's call was spot on. At the 350m mark it took off but completely imploded 100m further on. Damian you do a good job of making yourself out as a goose. No one else needs to help.

    Macca is an outstanding caller IMO. I reckon the Wilson family will long remember the call well after all the small minded people forget who came 3rd or 4th. Macca helped make it a special moment!

    That response is ridiculous Piston. So it makes no difference how a race is called because it is not going to change the true result. How about we forget about racecallers and just post the correct results after the race?

    Your last line is a totally different debate and not the topic intention of my original post.

    don't give theo any respect he isn't due slip......so many people at the club voted theo on as he was seen as a good young man that wanted to take the club forward, and to dismantle the old boys club...his response of saying mentioning someones birthday is more important than getting the race call correct, is proof that he isn't about to show the punters or owners any respect...so if it is good for him to show such a lack of respect, then treat him exactly the same way.....

    oh and theo is macca paid to call races or send out cheerios???

    Eddie I haven't seen you in person for many months, yet on Saturday when I decided in the heat not to stand on a ladder promoting Racing via my photography, and take up the invitation to come to lunch with my clients, and they by chance decided to sit in the same row as you to watch their mare race, you decided to brush me. You made eye contact but you are so spineless you just ignored me.

    So what sort of a small minded human being are you mate ? You are so over qualified to be a member of the Perth Racing Committee it is not funny.

    Your chances of selling me a horse are as close to zero as humanely possible.
