are a few of my favs
"I'll never forget there was a horse came over from Western Australia called Ngawyni. He'd been out of form and they'd sent him over to Bart. Anyhow, he put me on him every morning. He said: 'Just take him out in the middle and trot him around a bit, get a feel for him, then go a leisurely five in evens - no pressure.'
"And every morning I'd come back and say: 'Bart, this is a rotten sour bloody thing. It's got its ears back all the time and every time you give it a kick it grinds its teeth.'
'This went on for two or three weeks. Eventually I said: 'Bart, it doesn't want to be a racehorse. That's why it's lost all form.' One morning the horse jacked up on me - wouldn't go on to the track, and I was out there for half an hour, trying to get him going. I've done my block.
"I said: 'Bart, if you ever get this to win a race, I'll give you a diamond-studded gold bike.' The bastard still remembers that day. You know, all that guy wanted was a challenge. When he had a horse with problems he'd put me on and see if I could detect them. He used to say: 'Some of these guys today wouldn't know which end of a horse was sore.'
"Do you know, within a week or 10 days I noticed a little ray of light with Ngawyni. He started to trot out a little freer and only laid his ears back half the time. I said to the foreman: 'This thing is starting to turn the corner a bit. What have you been doing?' The foreman said: 'Bart's spending more time with him in the stable. I think he reckons the trouble is coming from his feet.'
"Bart had been going over his feet with a farrier, looking for sore spots. Bart kept saying: 'What's causing him to be sour and unhappy up here between the ears - there's got to be something causing it down there.' He kept working on his feet. They looked quite good to a layman, but Bart kept doing this and that with the farrier and the horse started to stretch out.
"I won the Australian Cup on Ngawyni. I won the Prime Minister's Cup in Brisbane on him. I won the O'Shea Stakes up there. We ran second, beaten a half-head, by Reckless in the Brisbane Cup. He turned out to be the loveliest, kindest horse. It was just that his feet had been hurting and Bart - I don't know how - had detected that something was wrong down there."
Higgins never bought Cummings the diamond-studded gold bike.
Silent Witness - unquestionably a superstar, remember being at the track when Cruz stepped him up to a mile and he went down a whisker :(
Other favourites of mine All Legal and Kabooki.
He also trained Starglow who won a railway stakes.
John also selected both of these horses at the yearling sales.
My other very big wins was from a horse I got from the tapes was Hotel Casuarina. I had a very good 2 years with that horse.
Finito and Hotel Casuarina
Kabooki.. wasn't that the horse that when starting in town had road trips so he was more settled for his races. (or I have mixed that up as well) :)
