The punt. Don't drink, don't smoke. Keep fit. Be honest in everything you do. Throw your brains in the rubbish bin on the way into the track if you use alcohol. Study the form like it's the only thing that matters. It is when it's your chosen ,and only source of income. You have to make it your whole life to be the best, or even fair at the caper.
The hardest job in the world, and the disease curable only by death. Mugs at it can knock off city buildings in the twinkling of an eye, and do. not everyone can have that much self sacrifice.
When your good at it you can tell trainers how good their horses are. how to place them, then set up the plunge that backs them in from 100/1 into even money. All legal. you will have the bookies shivering on their stands, as well as taking all their lovely money on settling day at the Victorian club, as it was in the day.
Sadly you will probably never get to those lofty heights. not too many people do.
As far as place cards go. Sounds easy but isn't. Hard part is you have to be a genius at assessing form etc etc etc etc. All hard work. Being a bookie is easy. The hard job is taking them on and beating them.Punting, hardes't job in the world.
