With meetings being postponed due to heat (Geraldton has a forecast top of 37°C today), I thought I'd take a look at the conditions they used to race in. Time Frame wins the 3200m Perth Cup on 1/1/97. The max temp that day was 42°C according to this:

Heed The Toll ran around on 25/1/97 after the Cup before backing up 2 days later to win the Australia Day Cup. He won the Perth Cup in 1998...tough.
All on Firm2 tracks as well!
He went over to Adelaide and won a couple of G3s before failing in the Adelaide Cup.

weather.com has max forecast 35°C. It will be interesting to see which forecast turns out to be most accurate.

Irrelevant what went on years ago...society has changed and there are expectations. Like it or not the authorities have to adhere to all the animal welfare conditions. Just imagine the uproar if a horse collapses due to some sort of heat exhaustion on one of these hot days. The activists would have an absolute birthday, something the industry certainly doesn't need. And yes we do have to bow to some of the demands made.

Exactly right Voodoo. you could also buy 10 beers in one go at the cup back in Time Frames day. Try and do that now

I'm happy to see sensible reform but it must always be done on merit and never to appease activists.

They just don’t make ‘em like they used to
“Back in my day” they’d race in 40 degree heat and still have to pull the milk cart later that evening

I hope in all this animal welfare crap, they also  an track work and trials....Or dont the activists know that horses are trained every day????

This year it is noticeable how the heat hangs around longer in the day and maximums are later..So it does mess up the races in particular.......AND........Still RWWA dont initiate the ability to run night/twilight meetigs.....

Now i'm a GOB with a selective memory!!!!! haha

They may have got this one wrong. It’s Midday I live 3 Buddy Franklin drop pints from Ascot and it’s very mild. Unless it going to get hot very soon

Revised max to 37 now, if it even gets to that it’ll be be around 3pm, could have started at 10am and been wrapped up well before then.

Why not have the first race at 0900. Everyone would be home by lunch time..

be interesting to see if the turnover is higher when eastern states are racing at the same time and they are all engaged on the punt say around midday here or if it actually increases once they finish up and we are all that is left.   Pikey in the last is an Aus wide phenomenon so I expect I know the answer and why they didn’t want to bring it forward
