One for old breeding buffs. Back in the late 60's and 70's, conventional wisdom had it that if you could find a stout old staying colonial broodmare line, the infusion of a bit of Adios blood could "brighten up" the genetics and improve your chances of breeding a good one. So, in an inspired decision, a prominent, and into the future,  major breeder did just that. A recently imported stallion with a 3x3 cross of Adios blood was put to an old colonial mare from one of the North Eastern districts oldest breeders. The mare was a fair race horse herself but speed was missing. Full of old blood from the likes of Kolector, Forest Dixie, Alfred Donald and Scotch Dillon, the family was pretty stout, and in fact, there was a potential champion produced from the breeding line who suffered an early demise after showing some stunning potential as a young horse up on the North Eastern Circuit, including a win in the NE Derby. The cross was no fluke with the mare producing several decent horses but one colt was a standout who piled up the wins from his 3 year old days right through to success as a 9 year old, displaying all the toughness of his dams colonial roots. Showing moderate form as an early 3 year old with his first win coming at at Harvey, he stepped into the limelight with a 3rd in a major 3 year old race behind a future champion, and then progressed to a win in a $20k Group 3 classic. His first try in Group 1 company had him placed 3rd again, a pattern that was to be repeated in his 4 year old days with the aforementioned "future champion" continuing to be his nemesis. As a 5 year old, he continued to work his way through the classes with FFA and listed wins, progressing to an M4 assessment prior to taking on the "big boys" in the major open class group1's, winning a heat with John Graham on board but a 4th placing in a final was his best result.
As an aged horse, his metro assessment continued to tighten with further FFA and listed wins, finally tasting group 1 success as a 7 year old and continuing on to claim a listed Country Cup success as a 9 year old. 28 wins, that many and more placings, north of $250k in the bank, he was retired to stud where he threw a few winners from as they say "limited opportunities" (read as "no one thought he would be any good"), including one very decent horse. Don't reckon he gets the recognition he deserved but if you know who he is, you'll think Yep, a very decent horse. More than enough info here to claim your free Busso hotdog on Friday Night. Maybe, if things go right, a pink icing sticky bun for desert.

I dont know Jay Jay - but i want to throw my - Who Am I - need to know the trainers name

I was a  legendary trainer who won a stack of top races - and had  some very smart pacers go through the stable over the years

However the only clue i am going to give you is my driving feats - if you can call them that - especially one

Many years ago when money was money and 50 grand back then was a hell of alot of money - well the Shepparton Bendigo and Ballarat Clubs got together and came up with a terrific idea  - any pacer who could win all 3 cups in the 1 year  - received a 50k bonus

Well my horse won the Shepparton and Bendigo Cups - thus creating alot of excitement - however coming into the Ballarat Cup - going for the big bonus - we hit a bit of a snag - in that the normal driver got suspended - thus a replacement had to be found - now i was getting a bit long in the tooth - and i was a bit pig headed - and i hadnt had a drive for what 12 - 15 - 18mths - but who cares - i trusted absolutely no one - so i decided to drive it myself !! - to the shock of everyone

In the Ballarat Cup -my horse was a raging red hot favourite - however my reflexes wernt what they were once - you could say i missed the bus several times in running - and we finished down the track - and no 50k bonus

The only other clue i will give you - is that Wayne Honan - a NSW Riverina trainer ( in those famous Lime Shamrock colours ) his horse won the Ballarat Cup that year

I seem to remember Lyall and Fran Porter paying around 18 K for a Smooth Business yearling colt at the sales one year. Lyall had a brain snap and hadn't owned one for quite some time so he was quite enthusiastic. Unfortunately I think that was the zenith of the colts life in terms of cash transactions........not that it mattered all that much......Lyall wasn't a pauper  ;)

Smooth Business sired Sano's Sano or something like that and it went pretty good.

Geez Chariots, you should host the "Hard Quiz" with Who Am I's" like that. Was thinking it had to be a Gath or a Rothaker but dunno about $50k bonus's in those days...so I looked up past winners and Tara Meadow and Raiarmagh Pool maybe the horses but Raiarmagh Pool was in successive years, not the same calendar year....so in short, I dunno....maybe Poppy and Bob or Deans Special and one of the Ritchies  but not my field Vic Harness, so no hot dog for me.

Unusual for Lyall to throw about loose change.

The Ballarat Cup winner that year - yep - there was no doubt whatsoever about the winner
  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
Sorry Marko, I did it again attributing your post to Chariots. so, who was the winner that year and who didn't win?
  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,311 posts
When i said the winner - no doubt whatsover - that was a clue

The horses name was Doubter - Wayne Honan /Brian Gath very good combination

It is a pity Greg Radley  ( Michaels older brother ) didnt get the GP CEO Job

Forget that he presently works for the gallops - because when he 1st came into the media - he was like Jay Jay - a trotting fanatic - especially on the breeding side of things

He used to have a show on 2KY Thursday nights about 9.30pm - used to go for about an hour ( this is before the saturation of racing and Pay TV ) - and people would ring in - and he would have his book out - and say oh yeah this thing won 4 South Australian Trotting Cups - by Avian Derby etc etc - he loved it

Never forget it one night - you had to ring in with your favourite pacer and favourite Trotter - no bulldust - after alot of people had rang in - both Dennis Wilson and Darren Binskin both stopped their cars at Public phone booths to talk about Welcome Advice and Popular Alm !!!

So it was Bob Knight and Poppy that got beat. Bob must have been on a high as he drove him to win the Bendigo Cup prior to Ballarat.

Public phone boxes ....what are they? haha, showing our age.  A radio show on trotting stats and history.....right up my alley, I would have loved it. About the best we ever had over here was George moaning about his losses each Saturday Morning ....and no disrespect there, we loved him for it....and the incomparable Lionel Lewis getting his wires crossed  on morning radio....and we loved him for it as well.

Getting back to Smooth Business, his sire Hilarion had a double cross of Adios 3 lines back and his dam was the Scotch Dillon mare Kaden, who was a good winner herself though not high speed.
His nemesis as a 3 year old was Whitby's Miss Penny and his group 1 win was in the stayers race, the Fremantle Cup (and showing his colonial lineage, the long journey of the Easter Cup as well as a Botra Cup). Won the Country Derby, 2nd in the WA Derby and 3rd in the Nugget behind Impressionist and Whitby's Miss Penny, and 4th in a Pacing Cup to Justaboyden, with ironically, another Hilarion horse, Hilarion Star, running down the track.Terrific horse for Ray DeCampo and family (and Johnny Graham who picked up quite a few wins on him).

Hilarion stood like Northern Lights at the first incarnation of Bob Fowlers Allwood Stud.
I was the under bidder for Hilarion Star.....the hammer was raised forever on my bid and Colin Warwick's words.....he was standing beside me...still echo in my ears...."you have got a nice colt there mate.....his mother was a real nice horse that I used to drive". New blood new blood....and I was gone ...my limit stretched already ...had snapped
8-}. Every time he went around the wound got deeper!.
I actually think Follow The Stars will do a huge job for the new edition of Allwood Stud.....not biased of course because we have 3 of them :D. Besides ...Bob owes me one.

Still remember the night at GP Smooth Business and his fellow bull stablemate Bunbury Boy got a touch excited at the appearance of a young attractive mare could have been Sassie Brassie from memory walking past their stall...it took them sometime to get their mind back on the job of an impending race that night.

Seen a couple of nice yearlings of late but none more impressive than a filly by Follow The Stars, beautifully put together and tremendously sensible.. Also, a ripping Mach Three colt, aren't they all, but got a dirty attitude and an even dirtier price tag....out of my league.

Anyone want to have a crack at the super promising horse that was in dams pedigree of smooth Busines that met a premature death? Think Fred McNamara.

  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
Yes, Nat King was the one.....was really going to be something. And Bill Jose was a very stout old horse as well. Nat on a NE Derby and a "money" race at Kal and then....tragedy.

Watched Nat King beat Anti Friction ( Schrader) in Kalgoorlie......he was a super impressive horse.

Anti Friction, now there is a blast from the past. Pretty fair horse from memory... a grey horse?.I think I was still in High School and that Alan O'Brien bred him or had some connection to him...I reckon he went alright at Richmond Raceway.....by Corals Friction I think who may have stood down in Bunbury.

That's him JJ. Good mannered little grey that ran three seconds over the round that year from memory. As a younger horse he got the wobbles late after appearing set for victory a number of times but went on to be a fairly decent performer. Nat King was classes above him though.
