The way I see it is that the further the distance, the more dominant Delicacy has been- and so far nothing has dissuaded me from this theory.

It wasn't until just prior to and during her South Australian campaign that she really looked liked she could have signs of being a bit special, and when she found the line like that in the Perth Cup after having her momentum stopped with that weight, in my mind it showed that with increased distances she will just get better.

Prior to this campaign (and anyone can correct me if i'm wrong) I thought that Bob Peters had stated she was only going to have a light campaign. At that stage I thought she might be perfect to be brought back for a race like the Sydney Cup. Not sure where she is headed or whether he has any firm races in mind but she may well have a bigger race win in her.

The rest of 2016 will tell us how good she is. Would love to see her race in Sydney in the autumn and Melb in spring. Caulfield Cup a target?

I agree there is only one champ of wa racing (in my lifetime anyway) and that is Northerly. I hope to see a horse one day that is good enough to even get close to the same record.

Having sold her dam, Simply Wicked (Scenic) in foal to Al Maher, for the sum of $4,000 in Sydney,  how much personal pressure might be being felt by Bob Peters to bid at the Magic Millions Sale in four weeks for the full brother, Lot 140 ?

This yearling is one of the best bred on offer in the sale. Now a full relation to a $2M mare that could finish her career with double that amount again. Bob breeds horses not based on their sires stud fee, but on proven crosses that produce stakes winners. He rarely breeds to unknown quantities, or at least I can't find one where he goes off the reservation in search of a champion.

So if this Colt passes x-ray and conformation exams by buyers, anyone want to put a guess on his selling price ?

I said in a post on the Perth cup, that it was an ordinary field, and that it really didn't matter because, without any Eastern Staters competing, it gave a chance to a battling owner or trainer from the West to get a quid.

As it happened, neither the owner or trainer are battlers, but the race was won by a local mare, so the money stays in Perth.

As for Delicacy being proclaimed a possible champion and being spoken of in the same breath as Northerly, in my opinion, the jury is still out.

She has yet to compete against the cream, in the best races in either Melbourne or Sydney. Northerly did and the score is on the board. He can be declared an out and out champion.

Until she does what he did, she remains a very good horse that is good enough to beat all the local competition, and can travel to South Australia, and beat the good off season/ Winter stayers.

Trounced the good lee hope trained mare Fenway in SA , the start prior she had rolled First seal inthe Group1 Arrowfield at rosehill, winx ran 5th in that race. Fenway was then btn a lip in the myers mare classic Group 1 on derby day in the spring, the form around her keeps holding up and the horse she beat in the SA Derby then won the PJ O'Shea Group 2 WFA against the older horses and then finished second narrowly btn in the qld derby at his next two starts.
She's very good but Perfect Reflection is rated a lot better and to mention Delicacy in the same breathe as Northerly at this stage is ludicrous, she still hasn't caught up to Old Comrade yet.

Delicacy is good at this stage but Old Comrade was great.

Two Kingston Town Classics including the Railway Stakes / Kingston Town double after finishing 2nd to Northerly the previous year in the Railway as a 3yo, 2nd to Northerly in the Group 1 WFA St George Stakes and just about the only horse to beat Northerly over the Flemington 2000m in the Group1 Australian Cup after a gem of ride by Harvey.

Fenway can't get out of its own road at the moment. First Seal didn't really come up its next prep.
Winx was about 15 lengths behind where she is now when Delicacy beat her.

I'd love to see her against Winx now. If she can beat Winx at WFA when they have both had an uninterrupted preparation, you could probably make a case for her being compared to some of the Wests great horses of the past.

At this point in time Andrew, we are in full agreement about her stature when compared to the horses you mention.
  • AndrewCarterAndrewCarter    2,171 posts
Not to mention Old Comrade was versatile enough to zoom home into 5th in an Oakleigh Plate btn just 2 lengths in the same prep as he won the Australian Cup, freakish horse.

I know a fellow, who I won;t name, but he told me a great story about Old Comrade from his time working for Bob.

Prior to his joining Auto Classic selling cars, this guy used to work for Bob on various jobs around the farm. One day in an effort to show Bob how relaxed he was around the horses, whilst talking to Bob, he leaned on the fence and reached up to pat Old Comrade on the head, unaware that he was about to touch the live electric line. When the connection was made, he felt the electricity surge through his body and the horse went berserk, and he fell limp to the ground.

Bob panicked, saying 'you have electrocuted Old Comrade' but showing no concern for my man.

Anyway the horse went onto greatness after that.

BL the start prior when Fenway failed terribly on cup day at caulifled in a run too bad to be true, am pretty sure I read that it suffered cardiac arrhythmia I know because I was on it.
I would hardly say btn a lip in a Group 1 WFA Myer classic on on derby day at its next start is poor form ,neither is its form before caulfield at MV when it won the Group 2 Stock stakes, you may have it confused with another Hope horse possibly.
