@H-BOMBER was on the money

The premiership-winning trainer has made no secret of his incredibly high opinion of Kia Ora Koutou, and was ecstatic as the three-year-old crossed the line for a dominant victory over the older horses in the Crown Perth Opening Day October 17 Handicap (2200m) at Belmont on Saturday. For Durrant the win answered the crucial question of Kia Ora Koutou’s ability to stay, confirming after the race the rangy son of Blackfriars would now be sent east for a tilt at the 2015 Group I Victoria Derby (2500m)."I haven’t screwed him down even slightly. He is still quite round and a little bit podgy and very babyish,” Durrant said.Kia Ora Koutou had not tried a staying trip before Saturday and overcame a sluggish early tempo to win going away on the line, prompting his Victoria Derby quote to be slashed to $15. "This will tuck him up even more and get him closer to the mark but the promising thing is he is still building in his prep,” Durrant said. "I know what this horse is capable of and we haven’t seen even a fraction of it just yet.”Kia Ora Koutou is likely to kick off its eastern-states campaign in the Geelong Classic (2200m) on October 21, an ideal lead-in to the Victoria Derby 10 days later.WA-trained geldings are no strangers to Victoria Derby success, with Plastered profiling similarly before winning the three-year-old classic in 2004.The $1.5 million AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) will be run at Flemington on October 31.

What an injustice that Kia Ora Miss passed away. Great running mare and now produced a solid first foal and this one!!!!!!

Does anyone have an idea on how the colt is looking??

I know Adam and Co. have way more sense and reality than that.

Oh and it will  be its 6th start after smashing them in the Geelong Classic.

Preferment and Polanski both won at their 7th start and before that, Fiveandahalfstar at its 14th start and before that Sangster at its 8th start, coming from NZ.

Bottom line is, they are all lightly raced 3yos never having run the trip.

Plastered beat a similar small field of seasoned stayers the start before it went over too from memory

Whatever horse Hugh Bowman is riding will win the derby. At this stage it's likely to be Waller's horse, Vanbrugh, who won the Gloaming Stakes impressively last start and will run in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick this weekend.

Gotta have crack and good on them for doing so if it goes belly up they come home and spell and get ready for our Derby ,then they have to run into Perfect Reflection who is  on Wens and its promising stablemate Arcadia Dream there the pick of the Peters 3 year olds going forward

Great staying pedigree. By a Vic Derby Winner, Broodmare Sire and Grand Broodmare Sire both Melbourne Cup winners.

well you cant knock the form on it. Deserves its chance IMO. Not many can do what he has done so far so I would say he will give a good account of himself.

I wish the horse well but winter form in perth, small fields and last win against a mob of "pensioners"....all 6 of them.

I think the Vic derby is all about getting the trip. If it can get the trip its half way there.

The guy who feeds it knows a thing or 2 about horses.

Actually Adam probably doesn't feed it, he would get someone else to do that.

Like Paraletic said, the Vic Derby is all about getting the trip, far too early for classy horses to be excelling at that distance.

I thought it was a risk on Saturday, so don't undersetimate a early season 3 year old beating seasoned older horses.....only the really good ones can do that.

I'll be on it over east.

They ran 3 seconds quicker in race 2 compared to race 5 on the weekend as well. If that means anything.

Love Adam Durrant and love backing his horses also a big fan of Smoking Joe Azzopardi  but he could choose the best riders in the country  he did this with Staeky and Moet and he carved it up at every start i wish young Joe all the best

I was at the Valley the day Plastered won the AAMI Vase. As a lead up race to the Derby that race has historically been a far stronger form reference than the Geelong Classic. Notwithstanding the fact that Preferment ran a blazing 2nd at Geelong last Spring. Kia Ora Koutou would have to produce a similar performance this year to even be a winning chance at Flemington.

I think the bloke who is training him might have a bit more of an idea than the rest of us put together, so he's obviously doing the right thing. I know when Adam sends horse up here to Broome that he likes to send them as soon as they have trialled, takes a bit out of them and they behave better on the trip..... so maybe the same thought process, as well as picking up some travelling expenses along the way.

totally agree with you BC4E I think Adams got a lot more idea than any of us on here  he knows he is in a Victorian derby with a real live chance I say best of luck to you mate fly the flag high for yourself and west aus
