This was the crowd on Saturday at about race 3 or 4. Things certainly need a shake up and soon.

you have a great imagination Diva..."The Crowd"..

Very scary..did anyone notice the tote turn over on the weekend??? Dont think one race made $200k on the win/Place bets. And i thin the first two races didn't make $100k. Would have battled to have made wages for the stewards

I now have to edit my images so that grandstands don't show up as empty or partial.

The only people in Racing who don't ring me are Perth Racing, I think it is because they don't want to hear what is the obvious. But sticking your collective heads in the sand won't make the problem any smaller, just the crowds

isn't this a good, ongoing example of the sub perfomance of the marketing of PR - as I stated in a like thread and was subsequently castigated and told to come up with examples ? Here you come up with your own photgraphic evidenced example.!

In fairness though, there were several functions going on out of the public areas. There were actually more people in the bookies ring after the last, walking through to get to the carpark, than there were all day.

but they are not rank and file punters, diva...most of 'em would have been free-loaders.

I like the 3-4k crowd level. I remember someone saying that was what it was Karrakatta Day, and that being the case it was a good level from the point of view of servicing the racegoers. I remember when Moreish won the Oaks we looked around to the stands and people were cheering and yalling - it had a really good vibe.

I appreciate from a revenue point of view the Club would want more, and consistently more, but as a racegoer my take is Ascot sucks balls as soon as you get many more through the gates.

I would prefer people (my friends and myself included) go to a half dozen meets a year and enjoy a reasonably good atmosphere and an enjoyable day than go to 1 or 2 and leave early cause you can't get a bloody beer.

So if this 'Carnival' could find another 3-4k day (at your $15 entry fee) on top of the Karra/Oaks and Derby then I reckon that's a pretty good result for the Autumn - and again, purely as a racegoer, I hope that's what they target - as opposed to the open the gates and get 10k approach....

ANyway, I dont really have a clue, but I do not what I like in a day out.

there is a problem with the product. it is very hard to promote a product that isn't as good as it could be.

The other problem is the space that people go into when they get to the track. In all honesty it is a space made for 4-5000 that very rarely gets utilised.. A better solution would be 3 or 4 areas that can be opened up as required for 2-3000 people per space...Ascot has the overall space to do that well. But it needs a lot of change. it will come. But if they dont fix the product it makes no difference.

If they get another around 4000 crowd on Saturday their publicity machine is doing okay..IMO...

Saturday lacked any of us..the normal industry people that go along no matter what...but with the footy and more main stream sports happening on TV( as well as the Sydney carnival just dripping with quality)...there were too many alternatives on TV to go and watch the racing that was on offer.

So i still reckon you should be castigated raco...they are doing okay, the product isn't..No-one could have generated interest in last weeks card, and the turnover proved that.

Why aren't they having a band playing after the last on Derby Day and why didn't they on KP/Oaks Day?
That usually gets a few more punters through the gates

.....of course they are "yalling" for Moreish - it was the local fav. that day. and % wise plenty patrons won.
Do you really think that Ascot can only accommodate an extra 3K patron?

working on even that level, there would not have been too many "yalling" when Moreish won at the same venue two starts prior!

yeah..yeah....4000 for a Karrakatta!?!?!?!?! Just hope that some of their target market audience 20 - 35 get onto the free advertising of FB and other social media and come along..it only takes a turn up of about 1500 and the other 2500 will be us usual culprits that go to good racing regularly..

Yes shooting high...hope i hit more than thin air!!!

I think they need to target the 20-30 odd yr old group that just want to go out for a good day of drinking with there mates have a punt on horses they have never herd of and enjoy themselves.....needs to be sold as more then racing, sell it as a good time with racing thrown in... I know myself as a racing fan I will go no matter what as long as there is cold beer and bookies...

Racetracks should not be about just drinking they should be about the excitement of good quality horse racing but our culture now seems to be just go and get pissed make a dill of yourself and don't give a flying fig about anyone else its all very selfish. Now I only go when I have one in as it is very depressing otherwise to see what is currently happening.

Give it a rest I get to the races Wednesday and Saturday when I am in Perth and very rearly see young people playing up... It probably people like you that look down on them enjoying themselves that makes them feel not welcome and not want to come back...and trust me these are the people that will spend the money not old tight arses bringing there on sandwich's that drive to the races watch there horse run and go home without spending a dollar!

    Spudley ...you're right but you're wrong -

we need all types - if the bloke (or ol' girl) who doesn't spend much - doesn't nominate their horse - then that is one less horse and might turn an 8 horse field into a 7 horse event - and the young, spenders will migth miss out on their eachway punt -
    let's get a balance.

maybe we need another stand out horse to bring the crowds. the days of marasco and Apache Cat e.c.t

Before making stupid comments you should know who you are commenting about before putting your foot in your mouth with such immature comments plus I am not that old yet and I do spend money on course.

Young people have money to spend on horses too you just need to attract them... I am trying every day to get them into it but its tough given the mentality they are faced with when I take a group of them to the races...
  • SPUDLEYSPUDLEY    1,584 posts
Good on you for trying I am not putting all young people in the one basket I do see a lot of well behaved young groups it is just the bad lot we see when leaving the ones trying it on with the guards who are trying to do their job without drunken yobs showing no respect at all. I like all of us like a drink but only to enjoy it but not to get maggoted in public as some of these yobs do.

Totally agree, times have changed from where the man leaves wifey at home with the kids while he goes for a bet and some beers then to stumble home full as a boot to a good home cooked meal and kids asleep.

That was years ago and any good woman won't let that happen these days and any good man these days wants to spend as much time with their kids as they possibly can. So in my opinion the club need to change with the times.

There needs to be a mini fun fair aimed at kids- toddler to 12 years of age away from the main area to attract families and not get in the way of the serious stuff, more dad's will get to the track and have a chance to bet and still spend time with their kids, My partner loved a day at the races in his early 20's but now mid 30's and a 4yo well the 4yo wins every time for him, combine to 2 and he'd be happy.

Children that grow up being taken to the track are more likely to continue going and take their children along in future years. Something the greyhounds have hit on ages ago.

FAMILIES.... that is what it is all about these days and it's what comes first to the crowed that once left it all up to the Mrs at home to deal with, It's a different time and get kids interested now and you will have customers for life! Young cashed up bogans are great for a few years but they soon disappear and your left looking for a new crowd once again, FAMILIES it is a never ending cycle.

20 - 30 yr olds dont bet thru the tote or local bookies

wont like paying $10 for a beer and then be asked to pay for a cab to get home

becomes a $200 day without bets
