Talented rider Jason Brown may have come off worse than our sprinting superstar, Barakey, after today's Oakleigh Plate.

Barakey maintained his perfect record but for all the wrong reasons.

Withdrawn at the barriers after appearing startled, stewards withdrew the Key Business gelding minutes before the jump. A race that was won by an unlikely hope in Mr Onassis after money poured for the unbeaten star.

Barakey is now likely to target to the Newmarket, where he'll likely meet Queensland star Better Than Ready. Black Caviar will not be there to challenging for a first defeat after receiving 61.5kg.

Agree totally. What a disappointment it was. I've been anxiously waiting to see him pitted against the eastern staters.

it was so strange watching this happen, it was almost like he never had a chance of running, as soon as he came out he was destined to be scratched for any reason, good conspiracy theory going on here, and yet look what happened to shamal win, ran absolutely no where after playing up in the stalls ! hmm maybe she hurt herself when she lost her shit in the barrier stalls, farkin joke !

good to see barakey is healthy crappy luck, just goes to show accidents in the barriers can happen anywhere even with the 'best' barrier staff in control. barrier attendants have the hardest job on a race course, under a lot of pressure. those people who bagged the perth staff need to pull there heads in and accept that if a 500kg horse is going to go off in the gates only hercules can stop it.

Im no Vet,,but did she favour her back left leg..in the footage i saw ...Boss and ?? are looking at the barriers(away from the horse) while she seems to favour her back left leg.I thought she was coming out.

Im happy Barakey was scratched..the moment he played up..I thought...please dont risk him. I was so looking forward to see him take on the east tho.

I was not a happy boy after Shamal wind became my sub....It should have been scratched. Not sure what the general consensus is.

She pulled up with an abrasion above one eye as well, and you don't get that during a race....

Unbeaten West Australian sprinter to press on with Newmarket plans

Trainer Jim Taylor has reported that unbeaten West Australian sprinter Barakey has taken no harm from yesterday’s barrier mishap at Caulfield and will run in the Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in two weeks time.

The gelding was a well-supported favourite in the Group 1 Sportingbet Oakleigh Plate (1100m) before being sensationally scratched after trying to burrow through the front of the barrier stalls.

Though Taylor believed Barakey would have been fine to run yesterday, he said he had no ill-feeling towards the decision to scratch the horse.

“I don’t blame the stewards or the vets, they have to err on the side of caution with the favourite but when he got back to the stalls he was fine. He could of run but they didn’t know that at the time. They’re just the ups and downs and the uncertainty of racing,” Taylor said.

“He was just ready to go yesterday, if that horse (Shamal Wind) hadn’t of played up in the barriers he would’ve jumped out and he would’ve flown yesterday. He was as good as I’ve had him which was a bit unfortunate.”

Despite Barakey needing to have a jump out in the presence of stewards before racing again, Taylor said it won’t adversely affect his Newmarket preparation.

“The jump out is down the straight at Flemington on Tuesday week which should kill two birds with one stone and give him a bit of a look at the track.

“I’ll just work him normally between now and the Newmarket.

“It was always the plan to come across for the two races and even though we’ve missed one, we’ll still go for the other.”

In big metropolitan meetings they really need to take a leaf out of Hong Kong's far superior book and unload the horses and delay the start of the race so betting can be sorted out when a favourite is scratched in the gates. This was a quaddie leg and the race jumped 2 seconds after the scratching was announced. Millions of dollars worth of investments were affected, but the race just jumps like it is nothing.

Barakey has gone off in the gates in WA, and "as a superstar" has been allowed to load late when here. Does not get the same treatment in Melbourne has to load in order, it would have always been a concern for the trainer.

I was watching and thought he was the last to go in...then the other one played up, so they dragged it out...then he went off. So I think they did give him special (which is normal) treatment, but the other one going off caught them all out.

They should just do what the Black Caviar mob do, get special treatment and no barrier rogues near him.
  • Holly1Holly1    24 posts
The horse in the barrier next to him has not been highlighted as a "barrier rogue" just got fractious on the day. The horse and the connections were entitled to have their horse thoroughly vetted. Just bad luck for Barakey. But as I said earlier he has flipped in the gates himself, so jim would know what its like. A lot of horses have another horse go off next to them and they just " cop it " Barakey didn't.
