In future when an owner or owners give you a sling to pass onto the Jockey...................PLEASE keep it and don't give it to the rider or it could cost you $10,000

    The Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board has fined Caulfield trainer Robert Smerdon $10,000 for handing the proceeds of an illegal bet to jockey Damien Oliver.

    The RAD Board handed Smerdon the penalty after finding him guilty of engaging in conduct prejudicial to the interests of racing for his part in the saga.

    Oliver was banned for 10 months for betting $10,000 on Miss Octopussy to win a race in which he was riding a rival runner at Moonee Valley in October 2010.

    Form analyst Mark Hunter placed the bet for Oliver before the former AFL footballer gave Smerdon $11,000 to pass on to Oliver at his house.

    Stewards charged Smerdon with a breach of AR175A, alleging Smerdon knew the money was the result of a bet Oliver had laid or at least asked about the source of the cash.

    Smerdon pleaded not guilty to the charge, arguing he "did not feel the need" to question Hunter about the money because he felt it was the personal business of the two other men. The trainer said he thought the money was a loan to Oliver.

    The three-man RAD Board panel, chaired by Brian Forrest, rejected Smerdon's evidence, drawing the inference that it was a matter of probability that "Mr Smerdon was unlikely to be oblivious for the reason for the payment to Oliver" because of his 20-year association with Hunter.

    "The facts and circumstances support an inference that Mr Smerdon ought reasonably to have suspected that the payment related to betting activity on behalf of Oliver."

    Smerdon has until March 31 to pay the fine but the trainer is likely to appeal the RAD Board decision to VCAT.

    L L he is an owner, so he falls under the same rules as everyone else, did not so long ago a commission agent refuse to give his phone records over to stewards and then get warned off. (Might have been tthe Nikolic case)

    I cant understand why Smerdon copped a fine and Hunter copped nothing, is it because Hunter was forthcoming with his evidence ?

    Agree PB ,Hunter became SUPERGRASS and rolled over sang the tune he wont be popular on return didnt he hand over his betting ledgar book ??

    $11,000 was a pretty big sling PB but a good point all the same......if you pass $500 or $1000 to a jockey for a good ride, could you get yourself into trouble?

    PB the money handed to Oliver was from a bet. It is not classified as a sling. If an owner hands a sling to a trainer with
    instructions for it to be given to the jockey for a winning ride, the trainer can be charged with stealing if he keeps it.

    I refused point blank to sling when I had a horse. C.Munce rode it a treat and won and got nothing. 2 starts later he rode it even better and got nothing again. Jockeys of that ilk are extremely well paid. I was a pauper having only left uni 6 months prior. I needed the $ more than he did. Slinging is a mugs game imho.

    Slinging is a relic from a bygone era when jockeys were not paid a riding fee or percentage of prizemoney and should be banned in this day and age. Being a trainer I know how frustrating it is to spend months getting a horse to win a race (if you're lucky) only to see the owners throwing buckets of money at the jock for 2 minutes work, while the trainer gets a pat on the back.

    I should add, I did sling the bloke who did all the work on my horse, his strapper/track rider.

    With the quality of todays kids, maybe we sling them in appreciation when they don't "slaughter them" and allow the horse to win on its merits? 8-|

    Jocks are paid accordingly as far as Im concerned, a saturday win netts them about 1500, no need to sling!

    Their sling is the 5% they take out of the prizemoney $-)

    Generally if a mate gives me something to give to another mate I don't ask what it is for.

    And if I did whats to stop my mate from telling me a fib anyway. Would Smerdon be in trouble if Mark Hunter had said that the money was for a business venture or money to repair DO's car that he smashed when he borrowed it or rent for the use of one of DO's holiday houses? Unless stewards can prove that Smerdon knew exactly what it was for this will end up in court and be laughed out in a second.

    that business with the 3 jocks having a flutter is a joke.
