Hoping someone here can help. Trying to get my mare served by Blackfriars but she goes ballistic when prepping her for the serve, even when sedated. Durham have almost lost thier patience it was not an issue when she had her first foal last year.

yesterday was the 2nd attempt in the last couple of weeks.

Anybody got any ideas ????

Was it the same sire? and has she been checked for cystic ovaries etc.

Different sire this year (Fath last year). Don't now about the cystic ovary check will ask the question. Cheers

Does the foal make a racket while you trying to deal with the mare? One of my mares was absolutely savage this year, sedation didn't work and she was getting dangerous so we sedated the foal(he was always squawking and fussing) and the mare was fine to serve.
Also a mare has a very strong self preservation instinct so if she feeling pressure physically or mentally she will fight being covered.(i.e is she fat , healthy, happy in herself, content in her herd?)

It's been a while since I was on a stud, but have they considered she may not be in season (an oh derr question i know)?

We used to have many mares not want to be covered until they were right bang on ready - the best way to check was with scans to see the eggs - was never fail though - the biggest tarts in the yard would back up sure enough as soon they were ready - sometimes you only get a very short window... depends how often they have vet coming I suppose to do scans - ours used to come every second day during peak season so we didn't waste covers.

If they are missing her by even a day either side of her eggs being viable she may well not be accomodating - nature is a fascinating thing.

As posted above, if she is well and coming on there shoudn't be a problem unless there is an outside stressor (like the foal being distressed etc).

    Good luck :)

No, would be nice as I rate him highly. Alan & Birgitt Macalister own My Atacanta, I assist in his marketing. So he is only mine if the large clumps hit the fan. As some would be aware, I also assist in the purchasing and selection of their racing and breeding stock.

But if Birgitt can lay her hands on that shotgun, that practice might or may come to an end. :D
  • So ' My Bloke 'was a bit of poetic licence ?

Most likely could be viewed that way, your Honour. In future I will refer to horses I own as 'my horse that I own'. For those that I have purchased for Alan or other clients, they will be referred to as 'that one I found'. For those that I suggested be bred to this or that stallion, they can be 'that one I bred with your money'.

But if you want to send a mare to 'my bloke' this late in the season, you still need to ring me. If you ring Alan, he will ring me and tell me what he has organised, because he definately refers to his horse as 'my bloke'.

By the way, saw a pic of your latest foal out of that nice race mare you own, nice and leggy. Good luck with her (think it was a filly). Anytime you want an upgrade, give me a call, 'my bloke' would love to be a Daddy again.
  • Sorry will not be downgrading my mare. She has another date with Blackfriars. How's your previous lovechild Carpanetto going lol.

That's called a backhander .......... Blackfriars is a fabulous stallion. Alan and I hope he also makes for a fabulous broodmare sire, being the sire of Listed Pinjarra Cup winner, Simply Adorable, who is positive to My Atacanta as we speak. The filly out of Soviet Queen by Carpanetto is reportedly coming along nicely, however she won't run until her third year I believe. The Trainer I understand is quite happy with her as I understand as a third party.

I know you only mean to have some light hearted banter Colin, and I know deep down you wish me well. It is only going to get better and better from here on in.
