Champion sprinter Rocket Man has settled in nicely to his quarantine facility in Japan following his arrival on Saturday night.

Trainer Patrick Shaw said the six-year-old, now an accustomed
international traveller, had handled the trip in his stride.

Rocket Man travelled to Japan on Saturday in preparation for the Grade 1
Sprinters Stakes over 1200m at Nakayama on October 2.
Dont you forget it ! :D

well if he is that accustomed to international air travel, why not come to Australia and take on the best in the World, not like there is no financial incentives on offer

Latest news from Japan on world champion sprinter -

As Nakayama Racecourse readies the red carpet, Narita
International Airport on Saturday, Sept. 17 saw the safe touchdown of a
world superstar, as Rocket Man, regarded to be the current top
    sprinter in the world
, landed in Japan ahead of the Sprinters Stakes
on October 2. Rocket Man made the late night landing in Japan from his
home ground Singapore at just past 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. Following
his arrival, Rocket Man was transported to quarantine facilities at the
nearby JRA Horseracing School in Shiroi, Chiba Prefecture.

Assistant trainer Jacqueline Lee Detert commented on Rocket Mans
condition after his journey from Singapore. Theres almost no change in
his weight and the trip went smoothly, she said. ?Before we left there
were no particular instructions as far as training went, but well just be
doing light gallops at the racing school Detert explained. Ill be in touch
as needed with the trainer. (Sunday) we won?t be taking him onto the
track, just leading him around the quarantine stables. Hes in good
    shape.

Twenty races to date, 17 wins and four seconds, Rocket Man has truly
lived up to his name. Indeed, it would be fair to say that Japans
Sprinters Stakes, the seventh leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, has not
seen this caliber of equine super star since the participation of Hong Kong
s phenomenal Silent Witness, IFHA world champion sprinter from 2003 to
2005, six years ago. Silent Witness bagged the race, a favorite target for
raiders from overseas, with ease despite the pressure of sky-high
expectations. And the expectations and pressure will be just as high and
just as heavy for Rocket Man. Headlines the world over have proclaimed
the 6-year-old gelding to be in a class of his own.

    Hi Damien

I think the twain will meet in December on neutral ground, Shatin, to decide who really is the world champion .

This is one race I will be there to see. Finally a match race between Black Caviar and Rocket Man.

I just hope Black Caviar will not suffer air sickness from lack of long distance flight experience.

"Beating group 3 horses doesnt make you a world champ im sorry to say mate he wouldnt see which way she went thats why they didnt come to Melb for the spring"

Another inept comment from the forums resident dill.

Rocket Man's record, at international level is unparalleled and win, lose or draw in Japan he is clearly the best INTERNATIONAL sprinter in the world at the moment.

Moody has two options with the great mare:
    1) Stay in Australia and have the world rate her from afar as the best - always with a seed of doubt.
    2) Take her to an international meeting and prove that she is the best.

    PS
Donga, please take a year 2 English class and sort out your grammar. It is hard enough trying to follow your dribble...

rocket man may well be the best, but it's rather difficult to tell when it can go around in kranji a stakes races with a huge weight advantage against nags.

as to who is the better of the two, then my money would be on the mare, but does it really matter?

dunno if donga is referring to dungy or not, but it's a racing forum, so if it's dribble or not, who gives a stuff about the grammar?
perhaps i should start using upper case now and again, but that would mean extra typing, so stuff it!

Noted Diva, I'll keep that in mind

    Carey, you missed my point.
Sure, he can't be judged on his Singapore runs but he has won in Dubai and dead heated & beaten a head in the two Hong Kong internationals last year - all three races open to all comers.

My point is one horse has "been there, done that" and one hasn't.

For the record I think she would probably beat him, I just get sick of people not giving Rocket Man his due recognition just because we are aussies and have a good one ourselves.

    2 things here:

    1. I think she would beat him too (in fact i'm certain she would), but she is a once in a lifetime horse, him a once every 5 year horse.

    2. You absolutely cant deny ROCKET MAN is a champion in his own right, and sadly due to incompetence he hasn't got as many international G1's as he should.

His first loss came to an unstoppable force in SACRED KINGDOM in the Kris Flyer running 67.80 (0.8 faster than any other time on the turf prior or since).

His second loss came in Dubai when Fradd absolutely slaughtered him getting cluttered up between runners when he could have been outside the leader.

His 3rd loss came in the Kris Flyer (for the 2nd time) when Fradd gassed him from about the 800 on a yielding track. That loss was the last straw for Shaw and the owners with Fradd banished never to ride him again with Shaw's countryman Felix Coetzee coming in to take over internationally and Vorster doing the job locally.

His 4th and only other loss came in the HK International Sprint getting run down by a lip to JJ The Jet Plane with Shaw admitting he got it wrong sending RM over for a lead up race (which he wont be doing this year, only going for the big one).

The combined margin of these losses is a little over 1 length.

He's since thrashed a handy field in an international G1 in Dubai, and demoralized an only average filed in another international G1 in the Kris Flyer.

Upon hearing that BLACK CAVIAR was going to Japan for the Sprinters stakes Shaw declared that he would go there also (to beat her) but BC pulled out. He was also happy to come to the Patinack should the quarantine restrictions have been suitable (which they weren't) or failing that will gladly meet her in the HK Sprint in December (which is now next to no chance).

I think they have every right to call him the world champion (still dont think he'd beat her though  )
  • rocket_jamrocket_jam    56 posts
Oh, too bad Black Caviar wont be in HK! But Im not surprised at that
    decision

I have been following Rocket Man's races since he trotted home to win his
first race in Kranji. I told my family "what is that, a machine?"

What still impressed me most is not RM's wins but how he finished 2nd in
4 international races. 2 of which were due to poor jockeyship. In fact we
actually wrote to the Committee to change RM's rider when we found out
Robbie Fradd was riding him the second time. And true to form Fradd
made a second amazing no brainer mistake that cost Rocket Man the
    race.

Fradd was recently kicked out of Singapore for his amazingly 'no try' ride
on a horse that was captured on video. Anyone who watched that race
video replay would surely gasp in absolute shock  Fradd was like
doing the bumps on the saddle of that hightly fancied horse.

In Rocketman's 4 International second finishes he lost by a combined total of only
    1 body length!

It was terrible blow for Singaporeans. Particularly 2 of the races ridden
by R Fradd. Many season punters and owners had only one thing to say
on that -"stupid jockey" and "no try."

Alot of money were betted on Rocketman to win, punters and non-horse
gamblers flooded the bookies with millions of win bets. Because even
if the win payout was S$5.00 for a S$5.00 bet, bookies still have to pay
20 cents dividend per bet (illegal bookies charge S$4.80 per bet,
    normally it is around S$4.50).

So, for Singaporeans - the subequent International wins by Rocketman
was some sort of a forclosure for his 2 agonising misses.

That's why I think Rocketman is the best sprinter today :D

So eat your hearts out Ozzies who think BC is the champ

I watched Rocketman's hitout in Nakayama. He was cool and in the mood
like usual. Only thing I noticed he is slightly overweight, but after that
hitout he should come down to 476. I think the timing and programming
by trainer Shaw is on the dot.

I think the other runners in the sprinters stake just dont have the class to
beat Rocket Man. HK's Green Birdie is 8 years old and Rocket Man easily
trounced him in the Krisflyer 2011.

The Nakayama home stretch is only 150m long, slightly uphill, which will
suit Rocket Man's characteristic strong finish in the last 200m.

This info from the JRA website:

    Rocket Man (AUS, G6, bay)

    - jogged, cantered, galloped (4F: 51.0 ? 3F: 35.4 ? 1F: 11.9) (turf course)
(exercised from 7:18 AM to 7:40 AM, ridden by Felix Coetzee)

"I was very happy with his work this morning. He did most of his speed work in the last 400 (meters) as planned and he pulled out of it very well. We're taking his blood later on and obviously depending on the result, if he needs another blow out I'll give him a blow out on probably Thursday or Friday. We'd like to see him on the pace, one or two off the fence, and from then on we'd like to see him in the first three coming into the straight and kick on."

    (Comments taken from Patrick Shaw)
"He accelerated well, he went up the hill easily and when I asked for a little bit more the response was immediate so the uphill wasn't an issue for him. He felt good this morning and pulled up nice and sound. I'd be happy if we can get a draw that's pretty close to the rail."

If he wins again, will Rocket Man's rating be above Black Caviar's you think?
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
not really sure, not a ratings expert myself.
what are they both rated now?
  • rocket_jamrocket_jam    56 posts
    Rocket Man - 125
    Black Caviar - 130

I'd say yes then....he races sunday does he not?
He'll jump over her at least until she wins her race on October 8!

However inspite of these ratings, other racing medias rate Rocket Man
as number one because he is an international competitor. And I
remember not seeing Black Caviar in their top ten listing

    Mate, the IFHA have BC @ 130, RM @ 125 and HL @ 122.
    Timefrom have BC @ 135, RM @ 130 and HL @ 128.

Both rate BC far superior to RM taking into account all performances international or not.

You might be better off debating if RM is better than HL as its obvious from the international ratings that they are more closely aligned.

Once again Coetzee is set to earn the further ire of every single race fan in Singapore.
Has gotten beat on him every single time he's taken a sit.
Has always looked most dominant when allowed to naturally lead, control and dictate.

Black Caviar would have chewed up - gargled - and then spat that entire lot out the other end, without breaking stride.
