young gun trainers

West Australian Racing

I really enjoyed the article on the young trainers put up on the site recently. We seem to have a really good crew of up and coming conditioners. The way Adam Durant has gone since losing all the Peters horses convinces me that he is a huge talent. What about a similar article on some of the oldest trainers -- some real characters amongst them.

By the way - speaking of old trainers, the funniest one i liked watching on the PR winner interviews was Owen Cocking whenever Dante's Banquet got up.

S Much for building these young guys up,but remember, they have steped into there fatheres, grandfathers shoes, who already have the contacts, maybe you should be looking at the young trainers who start fro scratch, who have worked in stables, and then branched out by themselves.

Give me tales from an old time trainer anytime.

I just happened to sit down with Bob Maumill recently regarding an up coming story I'm writing for a magazine. What a bloody legend, his life transcends racing and is a story worthy of a full book.

Does make me laugh when people continually over look one of the best in the business.

No previous generation to live off, moves interstate, with very few owners, Aquanita back him in business terms but no help to get owners, within 2 years wins a karrakatta from a horse he picked out at the sales, wrote down on the sales page karrakatta horse...

Also runs 4th with the stablemate. Had 5 individual 2yo runners, 2 individual stakes winners plus 1 other stakes placed.

Record with horses from other stables is second to none.

Gets a horse like Pampanito Jack, if you look at it's form before he got hold it it was 5 starts for 00000.....he has it first up 1700m 0-69 (couldnt get a run in a maiden) ran 2nd, wins its next 3 including 2 in town, then loses the horse due to injury, now cant get warm again.

Tells owners direct, the truth, doesn't mind putting his reputation on the line and tellling owners to have a bet..

Always gets over looked for some of these local highly over rated trainers...

    That is all!
  • Very good trainer is Simon but an old fart now. Leads the young blokes astray Lol. Is a great bloke, operates with the handbrake on and can't hold his piss, but a very good trainer.

Are you the Press Manager at Aquanita?

Couple of nice predictions you might remember....Sugar Fix would be winning the Karrakatta......Bag Of Nails would be winning the Derby

very good @ nominating horses. lucky to have a hand on the training side of things from MH White, whom does a fantastic job. wins races though and thats what it is all about, its why we're all here. so can take nothing away from him there. well done Miller. and when you declare more things than a cautious traveller you are bound to jag a winner @ a price

No one ever declared either bag of nails or sugar fix for either of them races mate, thought they wouldve done more raceday, but none were declared. You guys clearly get the wrong mail, blame your postman for that, not the trainer. He gets his horses well, fit and firing, if they are good enough they win. Love to have a dollar for everytime he gets a horse off a previous "good trainer" and improves them by panels.. Power Princess come to mind? Did it get beat in a CL 2 at Bunbury before he took control of the mare? You remember when he declared it its first 3 starts? And saluted?

Tough job being a trainer, everyone on that list deserves kudos, just thought he was a bit stiff to miss a mention.

the list was looking at younger trainers in 20's and low 30's. Top trainer though I agree.

C'mon Diva...most of those young guys have stepped into there Dad's shoes...while he is still wearing them.
I thought you were savvy....Jeez...don't be so naive, mate. :P

thats a pretty shallow view. How many did Ben get from Colin? How many did Dan get from Colin?
How long since Geoff Durrant handed over to Adam? Do you think Adam still has the same stable full of horses that Geoff handed him? Same with Brett Pope, has turned them over 3 fold since Bill left the scene.

My point is, whether they took over ongoing stables or not, all of them have proven that they are good trainers in their own right.

The excuse that they are "only good because they got it handed to them"....doesnt wash with me.

if you'd like to add another young trainer who has stats worthy of going in the list, please write it up and send it in...only too happy to add it.

Yes you are right. They are good trainers in their own right, but would they be if they hadn't been educated by their fathers and inherited the stable. Classic example is Gai Waterhouse.

Simon (IGA) Miller everything's a special. Best and most appropriate nickname ever.

Anyone would think one young trainer hadn't just won his second Kalgoorlie Cup out of just three attempts, but why give credit where credit is due after all it's only a race many WA trainers strive their whole career to win.
Talk about overlooking the bleeding obvious but oh yes he's a harness racing person so we couldnt possibly include him on the list you guys are appearing more and more ignorant by the minute.
Oh and ever heard of Grant Williams, h'mm let me guess he's another harness racing person isn't he.

So you can bag S Miller, but when people knock Mr Read (knocks proven to be 'On The Money' when he does time), you make a song and dance about it.

    Moron.

Lets just clarify. The article was about "young trainers".
Not sure how old Mark Reed, Simon Miller and Grant are, but I'd say mid 30s.
The article was about those predominantly in their 20's (maybe one was in the low 30's).

Reed, Williams, Miller all good trainers, just didnt fit the profile of that article. There will no doubt be a follow up article to cover the rest. Might even do one on the old boys, Bates, Kersley, Mitchell etc.

    Just relax everyone ok?
  • lets_elopelets_elope    299 posts
Reed is in his early 30's he drove Nebulizer into a luckless and close 2nd behind Our Sir Vancelot in the 1998 WA Pacing cup as a 16 or 17 year-old junior driver. I'm almost certain he was 17 at the time but definitely no older.
So he's definitely in that category of young trainers and he has had to do it the hard way with other peoples castoffs, which agains speaks volumes for his horsemanship.
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Apologies then if Reed is in his low 30's I was under the impression he was older, as you say, he has been around for donkey's years.
  • lets_elopelets_elope    299 posts
gained special dispensation to begin driving at 14 years ogfage and drove a winner with his very first race drive at a Northam harness meeting it was a horse he also trained even though it was in his fathers name. I think he drove a double at that meeting.

added Reed and miller due to popular demand. I guess we should add Williams now too? Anyone know how old he is?
