Son of Fastnet Rock to stand in Western Australia
In a stunning coup for the Western Australian breeding industry, THEROCK, a highly rated son of Australia?s boom stallion Fastnet Rock, has been secured to stand at Waterford Stud for the 2011 season.
A magnificent looking 4yo colt, THEROCK raced in Sydney before suffering a career ending injury and will now continue his career in the breeding barn at Waterford Stud.
By leading young stallion Fastnet Rock, THEROCK was a $407,000 purchase at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale in 2007 ? the third highest price horse at the sale, with trainer Gerald Ryan declaring him as, ?without doubt, the best weanling at the sale.?
THEROCK is from the top producing Scenic mare Bumps, and is a member of the first crop of weanlings by former star sprinter and multiple Group One winner Fastnet Rock.
Fastnet Rock has taken the Australian breeding industry by storm with a plethora of winners including Goodwood Handicap winner Lone Rock along with his other Group 1 winners Rock Classic, Wanted & Irish Lights from his first crop. In the recent G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill ? the world?s richest two year old race ? Fastnet Rock amazingly produced 5 of the 16 final acceptors including runner up Mosheen, at just her second race start
In his short time in the breeding barn, Fastnet Rock has emerged as the heir apparent to his stallion making sire, Danehill. Following the release of stallion fees for the 2011 season, Fastnet Rock as quickly emerged as Coolmore Australia?s flagship stallion. Standing at a fee of $132,000, Fastnet Rock is now the second most expensive stallion in Australasia and one of the most expensive and highly sought stallions in the world.
Fastnet Rock was a clear winner with buyers at the recent 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale finishing as the leading sire by average, his stock dominating the top end of the market.
Fastnet Rock had 17 yearlings average $172,644 and supplied six of the top 10 lots.
With his oldest progeny just four year-olds, Fastnet Rockwas the second leading sire at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by average with 29 youngsters averaging $312,069.
?We are absolutely delighted to have been able to secure THEROCK for both Waterford Stud and for Western Australian breeders?, said Waterford Stud Manager Dale Brooker.
?THEROCK was clearly an exceptionally talented horse, was lightly raced, is by Australia?s most exciting stallion who himself is by the immortal Danehill. Most importantly, the horse is an outstanding looking thoroughbred and we believe that he could become a dominant stallion in the Western Australian breeding industry?.
Whilst suffering from shin soreness as a two year old which restricted his racing, THEROCK was exceptionally unlucky in the 1400 metre Listed Anzac Stakes at Flemington, being held up on the fence and eventually finishing 4th to subsequent Group 2 winner and VRC Derby runner up Extra Zero. In what turned out to be an exceptional form race, THEROCK that day beat home subsequent multiple Group 2 winner Set for Fame.
Following the event, THEROCK was found to have pulled a muscle in his hindquarter and was spelled.
As a three year old, THEROCK had only three starts winning his first two Sydney races in devastating fashion. In particular, his win at Rosehill, where he beat subsequent Group 3 winner Neeson, stamped THEROCK as a serious racehorse. Further behind Neeson that day was subsequent Group 1 winner Small Minds. Winning jockey Chris Munce had no hesitation in reporting to TVN after the race that THEROCK was a Group 1 horse.
THEROCK was set to cross the Tasman and was the ruling favourite for the stallion defining, Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Ellerslie. Within days of travelling, bad luck again plagued connections, when it was discovered that the horse had pulled up sore after his Rosehill win and was again sent to the paddock.
Trainer Gerald Ryan then set an ambitious winter plan for THEROCK and he was to head to Queensland to race in either the Stradbroke Handicap or the Queensland Guineas. However injury again hit the horse in his first up race in the Hawkesbury Guineas on a questionable and shifting track.
?There?s no doubt that THEROCK had the potential and should have won a major stakes race?, said Ryan. ?It was only bad luck and injury that prevented him from being able to do so. We were supremely confident that he would have won the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas. We really thought he was going to be Fastnet Rock?s first Group 1 winner.
?As a three year old, there was no doubt that THEROCK was one of my three stable stars - along with Melito (G1) and Rothesay (G2).?
Ryan has trained many quality racehorses who have gone on to become successful sires including Snitzel and Hurricane Sky, and has no doubt that THEROCK will make a successful transition from the racetrack to the breeding barn.
?We thought THEROCK could have been anything on the track but now I am sure that he will make a top class sire and produce outstanding foals," Ryan said.
?THEROCK is one of the most magnificent looking horses I have trained?, said Ryan. ?He is very athletic, an exceptional mover, has incredible muscle mass, stunning head and massive hind quarters. He really has everything going for him to become a serious stallion and I think he will be an enormous success in Western Australia.?
THEROCK will become just the fourth son of Fastnet Rock to stand at stud in Australia and the only son of Fastnet Rock to stand in Western Australia.
THEROCK will stand for $5,500 + GST. For further information, contact Dale Brooker at Waterford Stud on 0427 102 061

So now he has gone back into work as a racehorse. Mares in foal to him have no value and breeders have wasted a year in the process.
Their other Stallion Cardinal Virtue should also be home by now after failing to attract a reasonable number of outside paying mares. I thought he might have had a chance, but only that, as his page was quite reasonable. The connections are looking for alternatives closer to home.
Like Rot8in said in his post, the first I knew of these two prospects was after they had arrived. Waterford Stud some time ago moved away from seeking my opinion. My connection to them is purely as one of thier client's representative. Nothing more.
