Stewards report confirmed what most thought

General Stewards inquired into the running and riding of DARK TARGET. When questioned
Jockey D. Staeck advised he had been given no specific instructions apart from settling the
gelding mid field. Jockey Staeck explained that after beginning well the gelding commenced to
race extremely fiercely approximately 300m after the start and despite his efforts he could not
settle the gelding and it had basically taken charge of him. Under these circumstances the
gelding had pulled its way to the lead and had over-raced throughout. Trainer Mrs C. Stelmach
confirmed these instructions and advised that this was only the sixth race start for the gelding
and it was still maturing and that the gelding had returned with an elevated heart rate. It was
now her intention to monitor the recovery of DARK TARGET and depending on the recovery rate
the gelding maybe spelled. In any event it was now her intention to restrict the gelding to races
    no greater distances than 1200m.
  • Lost a bit hey Ablett. The horse over raced, how can you blame the rider ? The trainer has stated that the horse will be restricted to no more than 1200mt races.

    Another great run by Moisture.

How many times has this game little filly run a place in the major two and three year old races.

She'll win a nice race one day.

But what an awful pathetic run, beaten 10 lengths!

You're kidding right? what did you want the horse to do, straighten up and find another 5? I'm tipping he's broken 22.5 seconds from the 1200m to the half mile. just forget the run. bring him to melb christine he'll win the lightning fresh up

Blake, the run should be remembered for the fact he is purely a sprinter at this stage. I would love to see him run in the Goodwood Hcp where they go fast and he could sit off them. The Lightning is a great choice for distance but WFA at this stage.......why take on Miss Andretti at WFA?

i'm agreeing with you there rodent but i don't think it was an "awful, pathetic run" i'm forgetting it. ok maybe not the lightning, but a race like that. ive had a big night and was lacking another race to throw up!

I agree, the run wasn't pathetic. The run offered no window to his ability at all, it just stated that he is a 1000-1200m horse. He may have won at 1400m but the warning signs were there for all to see.

agreeing with rodent here, great horse, just a sprinter tho.
Staeck did nothing wrong, watch the replay again.
Back to 1200m, pace on with a sit, or go straight to the front if nothing else wants to (as is generally the case in WA).
