An important race for 3yo being the most prestigous race after the WA Derby. For a group 2 race it surprisingly hasn't thrown up too many really good horses who have been capable of winning further black type as older horses. Summer Beau and Bradson back in 96/95 are the only two in recent memory to achieve this.

This year it could all change as Dark Target and Megatic appear real standouts. Lets hope they turn on a real cracker race.

HISTORY

Only 2 females have won in the last 10 years and hard to see one winning this year. Top trainers and top Jockeys have also dominated this race recently. Paul Harvey in particular has a good record.

Draw looks a bit of a set up........Ken's Double, Dark Trarget, Megatic gates 6,7,8 !!!
    Hmmm..............
(Even add Perestroika and Famous Roman 4&5 !)

I dont like this Perestroika. it won a 1600 in 1.36. which is very slow, the hopes are dark target and megatic and the smokeys are roman time and chance in time, < 2nd start and runs 3rd in a listed race and had a troubled run, bred to stay.

More than happy to lay your Roman Time bet......Whatever price you like !

Della you say not many horses have gone on and done better things for nearly a decade, i just noticed the time of all those races you have up, very slow, one was in 1.37. Every second is 6 lenghts. These 3yrs must just be the more mature horses at the time, not better.

what happened to that horse of neville's that won a few years ago then got sold to singapore?
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Royal Retrieve went to Hong Kong and raced as Cheers Winner - it was initially trained by David Hayes and then I W Allan - in 11 starts its best effort was a 5.75 lengths 9th.

Hayes said it was the slowest horse he ever put a saddle on !

Hong kong can do that every now and then.they reckon Vroom vroom was a good horse in argentina then a walker in honkers then came here and improved out of sight. And to think i had something royal retreive to beat old comrade in the veggy

Dark Target got it easy in front the other day i don't think Pontiff will make the same mistake twice in letting him get it easy and the mile will suit Megatic ."GET ON"
  • StreetRuffianStreetRuffian    457 posts
Megatic will turn the tables on Dark Target..Ive been a big fan of Dark Target but I think that Megatic wont get too far back and will run out the 1600m stronger than Dark Target..

I also like Moisture as the next back but I think she will come back a better horse next campaign but if the tactics of the favourites dont work she will be storming home and can be the upset..
  • BlakeBlake    8,176 posts
I dont know why it is perceived that dark target has to go forward.i dont think he has to at all. he's just pulled his way there on slow paces. i want to see them fly along in front so he can settle and be 6th or 7th, peel out straightening cos no horse in this race can quicken like he can.if they do this he'll run the mile right out and brain em.IMO
  • StreetRuffianStreetRuffian    457 posts
I cant see him getting that far back blake as if there is no pace on then he wont have much choice but to be close to the speed..IMO Megatic will blitzem..

I'm with you SR.......saved me the time posting my thoughts ! ;)

On a fast pace, Dark Target won't run it out IMHO. Megatic in that instance.

On an even pace, depends who gets the best run. I'll take Pontiff over T-Bone on the balance of probability.

On a slow pace, Dark Target will be too brilliant for Megatic.

I can't see the Pontiff mucking around on Megatic. He'll go to the front (or sit outside leader) and dictate a solidly run race.

This does look pretty much a two horse race. From a betting perspective not much value around. I do think Dark Target may drift a bit more and will be happy to have a bet at $2.50 or better. Perestroika could also become a good place bet later - drawn well, race fit and has already shown it can cover the mile.

    MY MARKET to 100%
    DARK TARGET $2.30
    MEGATIC $4.40
    PERESTROIKA $8.00
    MOISTURE $12.00
    OTHERS $24+

not sure where you think the pace will come from?
If DT and Megatic are not 1-2 in running Ill be very surprised.
If they are 1-2 in running, I dont think anything else will get past them.
  • darkshinesdarkshines    2,837 posts
I've got Perestroika leading. Megatic facing the breeze and Moisture box seat. Best case scenario for Dark Target is on Megatic's back.

I thought Ken's Double may go to the lead. Was very handy in some of his early races and thought he may have been experimented with a little last start to see if he'd settle ridden just off early, midfield then back by the 400m. Thought he may be a knockout if he leads as not much pace elsewhere.

Belle of Kenmare well supported in all markets.
$81 was bet on both TAB and Centrebet. Now $41 TAB and $31 Centre.

Has it always been the case where the horses are numbered alphabetically in set weight races in WA? Usually the no 1 saddlecloth is worn by the highest stakes earner.

Yes a rather strange one - I pre did my own formguide and then had to rearrange everything.

He couldn't hold it over 1400m so why would anyone think that wasn't going to happen over 1600m? It would have been a better chance in the Colonel Reeves......DEAD SET SPRINTER!

Maybe a big call but i for one am not worried if megatic hits the railway trail with 53 kilos against older horses. Might be in the mix but unlikely imo.Vain crusader was as impressive at least leading up to last years race and couldnt match it with older horses with 52 so bring it on albie :P
Other than hardrada's very unlucky second as a 3 yr old 5 years ago,how have they fared in recent history i wonder?.

Hopefully we'll get a detailed explanation in the Stewards Report. But what an awful pathetic run, beaten 10 lengths!
