Lee Steere Stakes

West Australian Racing

A race really steeped in history going right back to 1893 when it was won 3 times in a row by Scarpia and often a good pointer towards the top Railway Stakes chances. Also features many top Eastern States horses and Eastern States riders Jim Cassidy and Brett Prebble for example.

An honour roll of winners features the cream of WA sprint/middle distance performers like - Belle Bizarre, Ellicorsam, Early Express, Willoughby, Bradson, Jacks Or Btter in recent times stretching back to Asian Beau, Burgess Queen, Detonator who now has races named after them and of course the wonder horse Aquanita in 1960.

In recent times it has been taken out by mares - No Questions or Grasspatch Girl maybe suited this year?? Can Charlie Beau return to top form?? or will Idyllic Prince prove dominant once again??

This should be an excellent betting race.

I will really need to do some serious form study before making a selection.

Will be interested to see the markets.

New Spice is the lay of the day imo

hartlys dream youve been drinking to much of there wine goes good fresh all the time the never gets sighted and cant get around the bends of ascot.
i cant see much speed so i think grasspatch girl can get it soft up front and at the wieghts be hard to run down.

UMRUM, favourite horse from back in the day. Raced on Guinneas Day 7 times in a row and had a few visits over to Perth, used to love following him in his races at a young age (now 20).
With this race, undecided. Probably WRC and No Questions at odds

Watch for Mansion House, think he will put a huge run in
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
Well I'd definately rate IP, NS and even VC as chances ahead of HD. WRC and MH I'll go along with.
Wouldn't be backing a bleeder (NQ) in a pressure race such as this (could do well, but wouldn't risk my hard earned).

i dont think theyll catch charley this time, but how good is the spice?
  • ChrisChris    5,697 posts
He's very good, but like Guyno I think he'll fall short second up. These stayers blitz fresh but usually have the edge taken off in their second run or two.

$12 about Daka's Gem running a place is interesting. The only male suited at WFA.
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Well I have done my form for this race and think the best suited runners are Idyllic Prince and West River Charley - they may start shorter on the day. I am big believer in current form and weights.

I have framed the market (100%)

    IDYLLIC PRINCE $3.80
    WEST RIVER CHARLEY $4.50
    GRASSPATCH GIRL $7.00
    MANSION HOUSE $10
    NEW SPICE $11
    Upwards others

Vain Crusader will be a drifter at $6.50 - barrier and recent form will see to that.
  • darkshinesdarkshines    2,837 posts
I'd happily take the $11 about New Spice della . . . if we had betfair
  • How much can i have on New Spice at $11 Della ? :D :D
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
I think we had this discussion last time - my market is to 100% - I wouldnt punt to that - just think New Spice has some convinctions in this - 2nd up with 59kg and better suited over longer - been wrong before tho
  • darkshinesdarkshines    2,837 posts
    118%
    New Spice $4
    Grasspatch Girl $5.4
    West River Charley $7
    Mansion House $7
    Idyllic Prince $7.5
    Vain Crusader $9
    No Questions $15
    Daka's Gem $18
    Stormblitz $28
    Hartley's Dream $30
    Mr Sandgroper $50
    Master Vision $500

Pace is key here, even though he is fresh and SP probably isn't strong enough to hold him, Master Vision probably isn't quick enough to lead here. I've got Grasspatch Girl getting there pretty easily, with New Spice facing breeze, WRC box seating and Mansion House 1/1. I just don't think the pace is there to suit Vain Crusader. Don't think Idyllic is suited at the draw (at least 3 of four inside him will go forward). He'll get stuck on the fence, as we've seen before not his go.

Can't go past the four i mentioned getting the best run on soft pace, and of those four New Spice is the star. He'll win this on the way to winning the Railway.
  • darkshinesdarkshines    2,837 posts
PS - Big discrepancy Hartley's Dream - he's none from 11 at the track for a reason. Someone else mentioned it earlier, he just doesn't handle it.

Imo different type of stayer tho chris..can race on the pace/wide even and still fight on like not many others can.Am i crazy in thinking he is somewhat like hardrada in his racing style?(albeit hardrada didnt win beyond a mile and not a stayer as such)
Newy Will shake the life outta this race and in running DS has it spot on where he will be

Think New Spice is a definite risk 2nd up and lugging 6kg extra.
    Likewise Idyllic Prince.
I reckon the pace may be good. Master Vision fresh may fire up but I think West River Charley will hold him out and lead.
Assuming a good pace I think Vain Crusader could be the value runner.
Fitter and off a very strong form race I think he'll slot in worse than midfield and finish off too strongly.
Then again, I could be completely wrong.

Mansion House for mine.......most unlucky last start and should get a nice run tucked in behind them.

    Cheers
