Newsflash: Geckos Claim Victory In Rogering Yet Another Handicapping System.
The one way to be sure of rooting any handicapping system is the imposition of a plethora of conditions thus subverting the original intent....to actually handicap.
Whether it was the old 2.28 and better deal, the M/C/R, the HWOE or currently NR, there was always initial intent to handicap on a relatively fair and equitable basis.
There is universal acceptance that the downfall of the original HWOE were (in addition to the bands being too wide and RBD being the basis of compiling fields) the labrynth of numerous, complicated conditions, exclusions and exceptions which morphed a system that could have worked into an absurd Conditioned Handicapping System that was very, very loosely attached to the original HWOE concept. Equally, punters were absolutely confused when trying to decipher all the acronyms and just gave up, heading for the exits at speed, never to return to the Harness product. $1.04 favourites were not for them.
After the collapse of that fiasco, NR came along and for about 12 months, with the principles of NR being sensibly applied, we at last had a semblance of a fair handicapping system, far from perfect but definite improvement. Green shoots emerged, the number of absurdly priced "$1.04" declined rapidly, the average winning price of both favourites and non favourites increased amrkedly, suddenly, there was value for the punter.
Whoa, screams the entitled set, we can't have that, our good horses are being disadvantaged by actually being handicapped, it's not fair, we spend the big bucks, we should be looked after. Bugger this straight PBD nonsense.
How about we apply some conditions, how about we programme to suit our needs, how about we continue to stomp all over what little remains of our industry? Let's get some RBD's back in the mix, let's introduce a range of conditions on PBD races that suit us, let's get as far away from pure handicapping based on PBD NR, the simplest and most effective handicapping tool now available.
So this Friday night, just two of the 10 races are straight PBD NR races, just two. There is one RBD for a metro maiden (no argument there), and the rest completely subvert the basis of NR handicapping by being conditioned PBD/SEX/NR/L5$.
That condition completely distorts the make-up and barrier draw of the fields. Look no further than the Members Mile. The Geckos win again. Scandalous subversion of yet another potentially fair system. Any wonder the base of the industry is shrinking. And aside from GP being the ONLY track in WA without on course Parking for patrons (unbelievable), is it any wonder that no one attends?
Right, that'll do, back to Rec Room at the Aged Care Facility, time for Morning Bingo. "Knock at the door, number 4".
+1 -1
