Pingrup Cup Preview & Selections

West Australian Racing

Welcome to Pingrup. It’s the kind of place where the beer is cold, the track is hard, and the form guides are more suggestions than rules—unless you know where to look. Today, March 14, 2026, we’ve got a six-race card on a True rail position. Expect the surface to be fast and favors those who can find the rail and stay there.

Race 1: DGL GROUP HANDICAP (1000m)

DYNAMITE BAY is the seasoned warhorse of this field, and at eleven years old, he probably knows the Pingrup path better than the track manager. He’s coming off a dominant 2.4L win at Kojonup and holds a perfect 2-for-2 record at this track and distance. With the highest rating in the race (63) and Rosie Mahony in the irons, he’s the clear benchmark. The danger is TORQUED UP, who finds himself back in grade after a forgettable stint in Broome. He’s better than those figures suggest, but he’ll need to overcome the "Broome hangover."

  • Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) - DYNAMITE BAY ($2.20)

  • The Market:

    • Dynamite Bay: $2.10

    • Torqued Up: $4.50

    • Lady Tornado: $7.00

    • Double Rush: $12.00

SelectionRoleComment
Dynamite BayTop PickTrack specialist, peak fitness, and the class runner.
Torqued UpDangerMassive drop in grade; needs to handle the dirt.

Race 2: AFGRI EQUIPMENT HANDICAP (1160m)

This looks like a match race between the two at the top of the page. FOUR SEAS is the play here. She’s been knocking on the door with two consecutive thirds at Albany and Mount Barker. She draws the softest alley (2) and gets a 2kg claim via Rocky Cheung, meaning she’s effectively carrying 57kg—a winning weight in this company. SCHUHBECK is the obvious threat, having finished consistently around the mark at Pinjarra, but he’s an eight-year-old with a lot of miles on the clock compared to the upside of the favorite.

  • Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) - FOUR SEAS ($2.60)

  • The Market:

    • Four Seas: $2.50

    • Schuhbeck: $2.90

    • I'm That Girl: $6.00

    • No Second Thoughts: $9.00

SelectionRoleComment
Four SeasTop PickConsistency is key; well-weighted with the claim.
SchuhbeckDangerProvincial form is solid; the main threat.

Race 3: MCINTOSH & SON HANDICAP (1160m)

MAGNASONIC has been contesting much tougher Class 3 races at Bunbury and is screaming for the drop to country grade. He didn't have much luck last start, getting too far back, but Peter Farrell knows this horse well. If he can settle mid-field and use his superior late speed, he should over-power them. HEY BULL is the one to watch for a lead. He’s a front-runner who won well at Junction last year. If they let him dictate, he might be hard to catch on this surface.

  • Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) - MAGNASONIC ($3.20)

  • The Market:

    • Magnasonic: $3.00

    • Hey Bull: $4.00

    • Private Sapling: $5.50

    • Only By The Night: $9.50

    • Rum'n'Ginger: $15.00

SelectionRoleComment
MagnasonicTop PickSignificant class drop; Bunbury form is gold here.
Hey BullDangerThe likely leader; catch him if you can.

Race 4: KATBUS MAIDEN (1160m)

Maidens on the dirt can be a lottery, but DEW TELL has the early toe to dominate from the jump. She led at Northam before being outclassed late; back at Pingrup over 1160m, that speed is her greatest weapon. ARCTIC FOX is the "professional maiden" here, often finding a way to miss out, but her recent second at Esperance suggests a win isn't far away. We’ll take the speed of the 3yo filly over the persistence of the older mare.

  • Recommended Bet: Bet (1 Unit) - DEW TELL ($4.00)

  • Bomb: WHISKY FEVER ($15.00) - Showed pace at Belmont before tiring; could surprise if he settles.

  • The Market:

    • Dew Tell: $3.80

    • Arctic Fox: $4.20

    • Chason Wins: $6.00

    • Newington Boy: $8.50

    • Whisky Fever: $15.00

    • Rhaenya: $21.00

SelectionRoleComment
Dew TellTop PickHigh cruising speed; should lead and give a sight.
Arctic FoxDangerAlways thereabouts; maps for a perfect run.

Race 5: RAY WHITE RURAL WA HANDICAP (1660m)

POWER TO RULE put on a clinic at York last start, winning by over 4 lengths. While he’s up in weight (60kg), the confidence from that win is a major factor. He maps to lead or sit outside the leader, which is the winning formula at Pingrup. MISSIJAY is the danger. She’s coming off a solid fourth at Albany and has won at the mile before. She’ll be the one breathing down the favorite's neck at the turn.

    • Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) - POWER TO RULE ($2.80)

    • The Market:

      • Power To Rule: $2.60

      • Missijay: $4.50

      • Hot Chatter: $6.00

      • Mr Hollywood: $8.00

      • Anytime Anywhere: $12.00

      • Others: $20.00+

    SelectionRoleComment
Power To RuleTop PickLast start was visually impressive; the horse to beat.
MissijayDangerStrong Albany form; handles the distance.

Race 6: TABTOUCH - MURRAY REID MEMORIAL PINGRUP CUP (1660m)

The big one. STRIKING FELLA is the selection in a wide-open Cup. He is a genuine "miler" who loves the 1600m-1800m range and has a win at this track. His recent third at Mount Barker behind Deadly And Fast (who we know is a winner) is excellent form for this. He gets the 2kg claim for Ava Catarino, making him very well weighted. UNI QUEEN is the class factor; she won with authority at Kojonup and was only narrowly beaten at Albany last start. She’ll be right there at the finish.

    • Recommended Bet: Best Bet (3 Units) - STRIKING FELLA ($3.50)

    • The Market:

      • Striking Fella: $3.20

      • Uni Queen: $3.80

      • Argyle Star: $5.00

      • Angel Shame: $7.50

      • Brave Contender: $10.00

      • Others: $15.00+

    SelectionRoleComment
Striking FellaTop PickProven at track/dist; excellent form lines.
Uni QueenDangerWinning machine; the highest class runner.

Pingrup TAB Meeting Races is about a four-hour drive from Perth. But for many racing participants, it’s going to be a sad, angry, and very long trip home.

If you’ve never attended, don’t bag it. The hospitality is A-grade. There’s plenty of fun for the punters — a live band, Fashions on the Field, and Two-Up after the last race. Cold drinks, hot food, and you can even park a caravan or RV right at the track. There’s always full tote betting covering all Australian meetings, plus a couple of bookies — that’s actually one more than you’ll see at York or Northam.

Sure, it’s a dirt track — but so is nearly every other country track in WA, except maybe Broome, which is oil-based.

A report from the track a short time ago said there was no lightning, no thunder — just a light breeze and a sprinkle of rain. So why did they abandon the meeting? Apparently one trainer said, “The track is crap, I’m going home,” and that seemed to start the beginning of the end.

Like many country race meetings, it feels like they’re slowly but surely being closed down.

Remember Beverley and Toodyay used to host at least six to eight meetings each a year. Now Beverley is closed, and Toodyay is down to just one picnic meeting a year. How long before York — already reduced to six meetings — becomes another Toodyay?

There was nothing wrong with the Beverley dirt track, and Toodyay’s uphill run to the finish tested plenty of horses — though some absolutely loved it. Yet the PR Chairman of that era, a car yard owner, decided those two tracks were “no good,” and the plug was pulled.

    Some people call it progress.

    Isn’t it really just a cop-out?

After heavy rain it was deemed unsafe for racing. Pity, these small club's are a great day out. I'd rather go to the Leinster Cup than The Everest (same day each year). Just great fun.

Same me, just saw an add for the Quokka coming up, does nothing for me.

Fair Craic who was the "one trainer" ?

I'm uncertain, but I reckon it couldn't win, Because if you had driven for hours, and thought it could you would want to run if it even if it was snowing or 50 degrees

I was a keen fan and regularly attended both tracks in the day.

A correction  Faircrac... Yes Toodyay in sections was partly uphill but the home straight was slightly downhill. Photo attached below

I am down here, none of this is even true? A light breeze with a sprinkle of rain? what a load...

I doubt a trainer said that either, track was in fine condition, can't do much about consistent rain.

And we haven't lost a country club for 4 years, hopefully it stays that way.

It was more than a sprinkle of rain, a friend had a picture showing some wet  & assume slippery patches on the track. Such bad luck for all the crew at Pingrup

the dynamics to prepare one off things like this with volunteers is too much most times, plus plenty of other things on the same day, I presume went ahead yesterday
