Esperance Cup Day Preview & Ratings

West Australian Racing

Total ROT: 283%

System Adjustment: Following the success at Albany, I am further increasing the weighting for horses dropping from Provincial (Grade 1/2) back to Country Class. The "weight-for-class" factor proved more decisive than raw track records last week.

Esperance Meeting Overview

  • Date: March 1, 2026

  • Track: Good 4 (Assumed)

  • Rail Position: True

  • Weather: Fine

Race 1 - 33 DEGREES MAIDEN (1100m)

The meeting kicks off with a puzzle featuring the local "serial bridesmaid," I Had A Dream. While he hasn't found the winner's stall in 24 attempts, his ratings are consistently the highest in this field. He maps to sit just behind the speed from barrier 4, and with Holly Watson in the irons, he should finally get the monkey off his back. The main threat is Show On The Road, who showed decent ability in his first preparation at Northam. If he has matured during the break, he has the raw speed to challenge the favorite late.

Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) – I Had A Dream ($4.20)

The Bomb: He's A Firecracker ($26.00) – Massive improvement in a recent trial; could sneak a place.

SelectionDangerComment
I Had A DreamShow On The RoadHighest rated runner; 54% career place rate makes him the reliable anchor.

Framed Market (105%):

I Had A Dream: $3.80

Show On The Road: $4.50

Desert Madame: $8.50

Written Sin: $10.00

Arctic Fox: $12.00

Why She Left: $12.00

God's Wrath: $15.00

Others: $20.00+

Race 2 - AFGRI EQUIPMENT MAIDEN (1400m)

This looks like the bank-builder of the day. Puissance Playboy has been knocking so loudly on the door he’s about to break the hinges. He has placed in 60% of his career starts and has finished runner-up in his last three outings at this track. He finds a very weak maiden here and gets the services of Madi Derrick. He should lead or sit outside the leader and simply outclass them. Reign In The Cash is the logical saver; he was good when second last start and will be the one coming at the favorite late.

Recommended Bet: Best Bet (3 Units) – Puissance Playboy ($1.90)

The Bomb: Champagne Victory ($41.00) – Has been contested against much harder fields in the city; don't ignore the class drop.

SelectionDangerComment
Puissance PlayboyReign In The CashDominant ratings; maps perfectly to control the tempo from the front.

Framed Market (105%):

Puissance Playboy: $1.75

Reign In The Cash: $6.00

Queen Of Chaos: $9.00

Nanarup: $11.00

Secret Intent: $15.00

Cobar Sky: $18.00

Others: $26.00+

Race 3 - PETER RUNDLE MLA NATIONALS WA HCP (1400m)

We have a fascinating clash of styles here. Zadows Landing is an absolute track specialist at Esperance with four wins from six starts. He carries the big weight ($60.5$kg) but he is the class runner of the field and proven at the trip. Harlequin Prancer is the form horse, seeking a fourth consecutive win. While "Prancer" is flying, Zadows is better weighted after the class adjustment and has a superior peak rating.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) – Zadows Landing ($3.20)

The Bomb: Lacie Ace ($11.00 estimated) – Usually finds a way to fill a hole at this track and distance.

SelectionDangerComment
Zadows LandingHarlequin Prancer66% career win/place rate; loves the Esperance air and handles the weight.

Framed Market (105%):

Zadows Landing: $3.00

Harlequin Prancer: $3.50

Argyle Star: $8.00

Cap Cavour: $9.00

Lacie Ace: $12.00

Others: $20.00+

Race 4 - FARMGATE HANDICAP (1200m)

A very open Class 2 where finding the lead is paramount. Guard The Mullah was impressive winning two starts back at this track and didn't appreciate the step up to 1300m at Belmont last time. Back to the 1200m at Esperance, he should be able to cross from barrier 10 and take plenty of catching. Favaios is the danger; he’s consistent and has a good record at the track, but he may find himself in a speed battle early.

Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) – Guard The Mullah ($4.00)

The Bomb: Rum 'N' Ginger ($26.00 estimated) – Veteran who produced a sneaky good sectional last start.

SelectionDangerComment
Guard The MullahFavaiosDrawn wide but has the early toe to clear the field. Better suited back home.

Framed Market (105%):

Guard The Mullah: $3.80

Favaios: $4.20

Swift Streaker: $5.50

Three Ay Em: $12.00

Couldabeenahandbag: $14.00

Others: $18.00+

    Race 5 - ESPERANCE SPRINT (1200m)

Hilton is the heavyweight champion of this meeting. With 11 wins from 32 starts, he knows where the finish line is. He has to lug 61kg, but Holly Nottle’s $1.5$kg claim brings that down to a more manageable $59.5$kg. His last-start second here was full of merit. Storm Commander is the one in peak fitness and has been winning well at Mount Barker, but Hilton's track record (18 places from 32 starts) is too hard to ignore at this level.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) – Hilton ($3.20)

The Bomb: Jackemjames ($6.00) – First-up specialist who could easily surprise if the favorites over-race.

    SelectionDangerComment
HiltonStorm CommanderProved himself a "fifty percenter" and a track king. Claim is vital here.

    Framed Market (105%):

    Hilton: $3.10

    Storm Commander: $4.40

    False Statement: $6.00

    Dothraki: $7.50

    Jackemjames: $8.50

    Debonnaire: $10.00

    Others: $15.00+

Race 6 - RACING WA PROVINCIAL SERIES HEAT (1100m)

The ratings point directly to Hard Solo. While his form looks poor on paper ($13$th of 16), that was in the Magic Millions Restricted Listed race at Pinjarra. Prior to that, he was competitive in the Placid Ark and the WA Guineas. This is a massive drop in class. He should be able to sit off the speed and explode late. Meat Pie Artie is the local hope and won brilliantly last start, but he hasn't faced anything with the raw ability of Hard Solo.

Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) – Hard Solo ($2.75)

The Bomb: Marybee ($21.00) – Loves the 1100m at Esperance (3 wins) and could surprise if the tempo is hot.

    SelectionDangerComment
Hard SoloMeat Pie ArtieMetro class dropping to a country heat. Superior peak ratings.

    Framed Market (105%):

    Hard Solo: $2.60

    Meat Pie Artie: $3.20

    Royal Accolade: $8.00

    Buster's Girl: $10.00

    Dubai's Daughter: $12.00

    Others: $20.00+

Race 7 - FREIGHT LINES GROUP ESPERANCE CUP (2010m)

With Wild Imagination scratched, the market has shifted significantly. True Chance is the horse the ratings absolutely love. He has a $62.5$% career place rate and is a five-time winner at this track. His last-start second over 1990m was a perfect tune-up for the Cup. Arcadia Knight brings the prestige form from the city, but he has to carry the top weight and hasn't seen this track before. True Chance’s local knowledge and light weight ($54$kg) give him the edge.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) – True Chance ($7.50)

The Bomb: Got Lucky ($61.00) – A previous winner over 1600m here who can sustain a long run; crazy price for a horse with his engine.

    SelectionDangerComment
True ChanceArcadia KnightPerfect preparation; exceptionally well-weighted at the $54$kg minimum.

    Framed Market (105%):

    True Chance: $4.50

    Arcadia Knight: $4.80

    Outspoken Lad: $6.50

    Atlantis Beach: $8.50

    Razmas: $10.00

    The Jester's Son: $13.00

    Others: $20.00+

    Race 8 - FARM & GENERAL / AG & TRADE HCP (1600m)

We close the day with More Likely, who was a dominant winner over this track and distance last start. He settled on the pace and never looked like losing. He goes up in weight, but he is at a fitness peak. Midnight Rush is the danger; he was a winner here three starts back and is very consistent in this grade. However, More Likely’s last-start figure was superior and he looks to have more upside.

Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) – More Likely ($3.60)

The Bomb: Passion For War ($41.00) – Won here over 1975m two starts ago; if they go too fast early, he will be the one late.

    SelectionDangerComment
More LikelyMidnight RushDominant last start; the $1600$m specialist at this level.

    Framed Market (105%):

    More Likely: $3.40

    Midnight Rush: $5.00

    Stepchild: $6.50

    Titan Rising: $8.00

    Biondo: $10.00

    Royal Gap: $12.00

    Others: $20.00+

interesting that the Stewards Patrol film is not available for the Esperance Cup from yesterday at this time. I have seen on social media a few who thought protest could have been upheld (on what grounds or vision, I'm not sure how they can say yes or no) , but RWWA  need to be transparent on any decisions that are made, I really wanted to have a look for myself, but it ain't there yet the other 7 races it's there. Something not right.

I needed it upheld. I saw the head on on SKY and there was definitely a bump but I had the protest only a 15% chance of being upheld.

Just seen head on, as finally been added to the CRIS page, & yes agree could not uphold the protest on that.
