Winterbottom Stakes Information

West Australian Racing
Hi, I'm chasing some information on the history of the Winterbottom Stakes for a Blog I have and would appreciate any help that could be offered.
The years in question are:
1958 Bebe Grande - Colours of the owner Mrs E Webb
1965 Watersan - Colours of the owners R W Saunders &
A J Wilson
1967 Railway Boy - Colours of the owners Mrs M Paterson
& W W Pope
1990 Century God - Owners name (online video shows his rider wearing the same colours as Lloyd Williams but find any info that Williams owned him.
I know the first three are going back a long way, but maybe someone has some old racebooks that might have the information I'm chasing.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Daza

Hi Loose_Goose, Those details are after his Winterbottom win when I think he changed ownership. He was trained by David Hayes not George Hanlon when he won the Winterbottom. The colours of the ownership (Sellwood Syndicate - red and gold diamonds, purple sleeves) don't match the colours on the video of the race, they are Lloyd Williams navy, white armbands & cap).

Thanks for that Manchild. Just did a bit of Googling and you are correct. I'm thinking that the navy blue and white armbands might be Buster's stable colours as there's another online video showing an O'Malley trained horse named Original Sin winning with those colours on the same day as Century God.

Is the W.W Pope from the Brett Pope family, if so good chance it raced in the current Pope colours.

Yes it could be. The other part-owner, Mrs M Paterson might be the wife of A. R. Paterson who was heavily involved on the commitee of several race clubs in WA back in the 1940s early 50s. His colours were red, orange sleeves & cap. Perhaps she used the same colours.

what a great money rider Tommy was...in the days when you could really pull off a plunge with 30+ bookies on course.
  • VoodooVoodoo    1,361 posts

  • thefalconthefalcon    20,471 posts
never heard of duffy but brian m was quite successful. he returned home to sth aust. and had  great success..i think he may have won a leading trainer award.
he lived to a ripe old age dying not so long ago.

    Hi again,
I'm now working on the Railway Stakes to include on my Blog and I'm needing some information on the 1974 winner, Cambana Lad. He was owned by Mrs C G Murphy and trained by Frank Dixey and I'm trying to find the owners colours.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
