Didn't think Alan Tuthill drove in Junior Championship .But he done a brilliant job with little horse called Leg Before

Old Tutty was born 40 years before this photo was taken, he drove his first winner (Kath Oro) in Bridgetown in 1963, although granted, the photo in question bares a striking resemblance.

When I think about Alan, I (without apology) jump on my soap box to repeat that the horrible mismanagement of our Industry by alleged administrators over many decades has driven many like Tutty out of the game. They were the base of the Trotting Pyramid these (mainly) old blokes, many were farmers, in Tutty's case cows, many had just a few mares, almost all were underestimated as breeders, labelled as clueless old fashioned, hay seeds but many knew more about horses and horsemanship in their little fingers than a bus load lot of modern day bureaucrats.

Tutty is the perfect example. Kath Oro was by Our Mo.....Our "who" I hear you ask? Our Mo was by the immortal Raider and the Tuthills put him over a King Oro mare to produce Kath Oro. One of Kath Oro's progeny was a stallion called Tremendous who won 8 races in the South West. One of Tremendous's daughters Tremelo was the dam of Leg Before who as we all know won 25 races, 13 in Perth including a Mount Eden Sprint, a Winter Cup and an Albany and Wagin Cup. Kath Oro also produced Star Dillon, a very fast but injury prone horse that put together 4 wins a row around Bridgetown in 1977 but broke down shortly after. Tutty gave him 2 years off chasing cows around a paddock, bought him back to win two more races at Bridgetown and then he went to Perth with Phil Coulson and won his Qualifying Stakes and his 2.21 class in successive weeks. He also ran an incredible number of successive 2nds in town....."food on the table son, food on the table". They weren't fashionable these blokes, Tutty's ute and float were hardly able to pass muster at the licensing centre but off he would trudge to Perth every Friday arvo and back the same night, invariably with some cash in the pocket and a wry wisp of a smile.

These blokes also had a sense of humour.....Tutty's brother Peter was a legendary cricketer in Manjimup, playing well into his late 50's and 60's....thus Leg Before a very appropriate name. But as the rationalists and wise administrators started centralising everything and country based racing was reduced to a slither of what it once was with clubs completely shut down left, right and centre,  these base blocks of the pyramid have disappeared, very few mares in the back paddock nowadays, no Frosty Nelsons out at Nyamup (or I dare say Dainty's Daughter's at Cunderdin or Color Glo's in Wagin....yes, there is still a Lavra Joe in Greenbushes whose every win over the leviathan metro based juggernauts is greeted with rapturous cheering in the front bar at Manji Pub TAB), never to return and the industry's slide into oblivion continues unhindered and the shocking decision makers line up to reward themselves with gongs to pin on their lapels or churn out uncosted, pie in the sky revitalisation plans for the Metro track at the rate of about one a decade. None of them have worked yet and none are likely to....erode the foundations and the house falls down.

Every 2-3 years Hayden Fisher name gets a mention .Quite a few older reinsmen would comment on his seat in the cart like he was moulded there at the height of his career there wouldn't have been a better young driver in Aus coming through the ranks in mid eighties. Happy go lucky nothing fazed him loved to laugh then sadly a fork appeared in the road and Hayden took the wrong turn But left his mark on W.A Harness.

I see in the paper this morning the passing of Patrick Gilroy. Patrick who many would ask? Well, old Mr Gilroy won't get any headlines in National Trotguide but he has bred from what may be one of the more unigue broodmare bloodlines in living memory. His mare Le Chambon comes from 6 generations of non winners, go back as far as you can and not a winner to be found. Generation after generation and utilising the best stallions available, success of any sort eluded Mr Gilroy for over 50 years. Finally, and with fantastic support from the Abercromby Family, Mr Gilroy was able to attend headquarters to watch Marquisard win on a Friday Night, I think it being the first time he ever witnessed one of his horses winning. Since then, Le Chambon has produced both Dissertation and Free Wheeling to totally confuse the breeding experts. Farewell Mr Gilroy, a man of indefinite patience and optimism, and a well done to Craig Abercromby for providing him with great joy in his declining years. Only a small cog in the wheel but we are running desperately short of those small cogs as the centralists keep squeezing the industry into oblivion. No breeders,  no foals, no owners, no trainers, no drivers, no industry.

I tried to reply to that photo - great photo it is - re Young Drivers

But if you click that post re the photo as in replying to it - you get a close up of them - the length of their hair - incredible - and when you see  it - i wonder who the bloke is 4 from the right - and the bloke next to him - 3 from the right - boy is he a mean looking dude

Not hard to pick Peter Morris ( Robbies father ) - i reckon its the bloke standing right out the front - very confident person

The bloke on the far right - i know he wasnt in the series but that looks like a young David Aitken

And i see earlier on this page thread - Peter Caldow mentioned - tradgedy - killed in a car accident going to Mildura Trots . But his father was a bit of a character - Jack Caldow . I probably went  down to Moonee Valley half a doxen times - magnificent public facilities - you could view the horses in the bird cage/parade ring - from inside the grandstand - or you could be outside at ground  level - where i was for a nondescript type of race . And old Jack had a drive in it - so hes in the sulky in that circular parade ring area going around to their called out . Anyhow this wag ( obviously he knew him -probably a knockabout from up Mildura way ) leant over the fence when Jack went past - and said - gee Jack - those colours could do with a decent wash couldnt they - much to the amusement of the onlookers
