Keith Watt only played for a few seasons and then walked away from the game, maybe 50 or 60 games. I know they were trying to find him at one stage for a reunion (40 years) of their 1973 Premiership team but were not successful. He could play alright, I think he kicked a bag of goals when Subi won in 1973, roving to Peter Burton I think........Although I now despise Subi for all manner of reasons, I was delighted at the time because they beat West Perth and in those days if the Munchers were playing the Taliban, I'd barrack for the Taliban. His old man was a top class cricketer, Dave Watt......he scored a century at the Gabba for WA when they won their first ever Sheffield Shield the first year the Eastern States establishment allowed them into the competition

Came down from Kalgoorlie with MRFC colts & went to that GF....we were in the Subiaco district by then & Basil Fuller got us the tickets. Packed house...watched from the hill behind the city end goals....fights in the crowd...it had it all. Peter Steward was the West Perth skipper I think.

Peter Steward was a magnificent player ex North Melbourne. It caused a great ruckus when he applied for a clearance to leave North who were the laughing stock of the VFL at the time.....pre Barrassi/Ron Joseph days maybe 1970 or 1971. I met him a number of times, an absolute gentleman who had a liquor store in Bayswater just prior to the subway (Coode Street is it?). I think (may be wrong) that he was the first footy player to have a knee reconstruction......if so it worked really well because he was like a cat at Centre Half Back and could kick it a mile. He might even have been a playing Captain Coach at the time?

Yes Peter Steward ran Knights, a stock feed and garden center in Wangara a few years ago. Had quite a few yarns with him, i believe he sold the business to care for his ill wife.

A mate of my late fathers in the years prior to his passing. Visited him every Friday no matter what time Friday always before midday they would down a couple of Stubbs. I always called him Watty Thought his first name was Keith . Was a good mate iof Colin Clunes . But was sure he played for the Black fucks . Different blockes ?

I think there were 2 Keith Watt's in WAFL footy in the 1960s/70s SK.
The SD version played on a half forward flank in our 1961, 62, 63 Premierships 72 games, 64 goals from 1961-64.
The Subiaco version played as a forward pocket/rover in their 1973 flag, 71 games from 1970-78..

VK would know for sure but I think Peter Hodyll is still the president at Swannies.

Yes JJ Peter Hodyl has been our President since 2012/13.
He was Captain of our Premiership team in 1990 with skipper Brad Shine out injured.

VK, did Brad Shine come back from Carlton and play for the swannies again? i moved over east before that and WAFL is unheard of in the papers over there.

    Yes he did OH.
Played at Swans from 1980-84, then went to Carlton and played there from 1985-88 before coming back home to WA and finish his career at Swans in 1989-90 but his knee was shot unfortunately and he missed most of the 1990 season.
Originally from Harvey/Brunswick he was the toughest player I have seen for his size, he just had eyes only for the footy and too bad if anything was in his way.

I see Tom Morris has today again changed his opinion re Clarkson to Blues.
Seriously the guy is lower than a snakes belly. All care and no responsibility.
Hope Teague sues the arse off him when all this settles.

The footy media are pretty much clueless, all just guesstimators!
The amount of times the local media stated they "believe" Cerra was staying at Fremantle was unbelievable.
I would have thought it was pretty obvious the longer you leave announcing your staying the chances are you are actually going.......that way the player can eeek out as many match payments as possible!

    Spot on VK!!!

The footy media full of so called know it alls and parasites who make a living from our wonderful game with their opinions and articles. They wouldnt have any idea of the challenges that players and coaches face every day. Our game is so much poorer for these so called "experts".

    Cheers cisco

Bit of a kick in the Guts for Freo  re Cerra leaving - it will be interesting which club he goes to - he was pick 5 - maybe they have to look at drafting WA kids so they dont pull the pin

Interesting - Peter Sumich - and i cant believe the critcism that guy gets in the media  over here-they make him out that he is some dill

The facts of the matter are he was champion FF ( sunk and put the dagger right  through the Cats in a couple of finals - like PFs and GFs and they dont get any bigger than that ) and he said at the start of this season - if he was coaching Freo - hed put Nat Fyffe on the trade table get 2 - 1st round draft picks - and his view - your not going to win a flag in Fyffes career - but those 2 picks might help you win a flag - would have been smart business - with NF now all banged up

I just think Suma would have been a really good coach of Frem - gives the impression would not tolerate the rubbish performances - not at all

Yet they ignore the 2 time flag winning champion player and a very experienced coach - instead Bell  appoints a mate in JL - who i thought was an inconsistent  player - and he appoints a mate in J Carr ( had the indiscretion )

To me just another lost opportunity for Frem

And cheers to Cisco - hes really cranked up - put a rocket under this football forum

Why don’t West Coast give Suma a job Marko.
After all he’s a WC premiership champion forward ??

Obviously still got some of the RTB stench on him after his stint at the Dockers….Ouch  @-)

Well they have their chance now, WC centrefield coach has walked.
Go Suma let’s see if WC makes the same mistake as Freo.

This is more for the veteran posters

But with Melb right up their this year - 1st minor premiership since  1964

And one of their superstars was Hassa Mann - played in those Demon premierships under Norm Smith . Aparently a very skilful player

Then he came over - and Capt/coach of South Frem - and in that position won the flag 1970

Just wondering if anyone saw him play here with SF - and how they rated him

i was at the 70 GF but so young i was only watching the Red and White jumpers.

The old man was a Bulldog supporter all his life, and always talked abut him whenever footy came up in conversation, so he must have made an impression on him

“Ross the Boss” being his smug self on Footy Classified tonight.
Carlton can have him. Good luck with that.
Apparently him and Cerra aren’t exactly on great terms ? That could be awkward.

Know a former player who was cut from the Dockers . He used to stand up to RTB a bit & RTB didn't like it. He said Sumich was the only person to tell RTB he was wrong when he was axed.

Im not a fan of Lyon - that incident took alot of gloss off his reputation for mine - and i didnt like his smugness - when well into his coaching over here - he said to the reporter - im not the coach - im just the figurehead and gave that goofy laugh

When he left StK and joined Frem - money would have been a big reason - because apparently when he was coaching the Saints - he just about ended up penniless - blew all his money on the stock market - penny dreadfuls - and what i read - to such a degree  - that he had  to move ( with his wife and children ) back to his parents place to live - because he had no money

What is he 53 - you know even if it ends up a disaster - results wise - he is still very well remunerated

If i was the Blues id be getting someone 35 - with 3-4 years experience as an assistant coach

Only RTB has indicated he is going to Carlton, no one else so it is all speculation and media hype.
Same with Cerra, why the hell would he go to Carlton,, I still reckon somehow Clarke from Geelong will be in the trade.

Thanks JJ for the video...Fantastic to hear from the old fellas, with none of that political **** that is ingrained in our language of today.

I never got on with my old man, mainly because i played hockey instead of footy, as my main sport. Now maybe i understand a bit better why i have one fleeting memory of him driving me home after a junior footy match. Usually i'd come out of the change-rooms and walk home with a mate, as the old man had long gone straight to the pub, to get a belly full, so he could come home later that night and abuse the 5hit out of me for being so hopeless.

in the late 70's a kid from the next age bracket was playing up in our grade and we were told to look after him.....we were short of numbers and this kid was not too bad a player. At half time we were being towelled up and the coach, said lets try and break even in the second half. He looked directly at me and said "and lets make sure these young blokes are being protected at all times"

So a few minutes into the second half, as i was resting at full forward i saw a player from the opposition elbow this junior and it knocked him to the ground about at Centre half back. The little fella to his credit got up and gave him a shove only to be elbowed in the head again. Well i ran the length of the field and dropped the opposition player. Then a brawl started and we got a few of them, parents came on the ground, and eventually the cops too.

So a good humdinger, as was part of the game. No news reports, no suspensions, no tribunal. Even though it was a bit rugged, it was considered part of the game. AND the old man waited for me at the end of the game and drove me home...The only time i can recall getting any sort of recognition from him.

An that was just part of that era of how footy was played, an for those young ones who listened to Hassa, it was just another aspect to how footy was played....at all levels

I read in one of Kevin Sheedys books - that Polly Farmer in the 1960s when he was captain of Geelong - he wasnt allowed to vote -  not entitled to vote at elections

Who was the better Punter - Kevin or Polly?

Yes, it was a good watch Rio....Souths have done a great job remembering their past champs via that "Forever South" You Tube channel  .....a great series of chats with Toddy, Tony Parentich etc etc. Toddy is still very much up and about, we hosted him and Meryl at the 16th Todd Cooper Cup at Deanmill 3 weeks ago. He was delighted to watch the Mill Boys hand out a hiding to the old enemy, Manjimup Imperials, on a very wet track.

I was at that GF when Turkey Tom belted Bob Shields, it weren't pretty, made worse by the fact that Bob Shields was a great talent who probably wouldn't have heart a fly. And Tom was hard but hardly a thug.....and there were a few of them running around in those days. A few years later, even the majestic Polly took out both Hans Verstegen and Keith Doncon  very early in the GF when "Turncoat" Polly lead the Cardies to a massive win over the Royals.
