AFL Never Learns

Reading of Eddie Betts well deserved retirement after 350 games, wonderful achievement. The blurb goes on......one of 19 players to reach the the 350 mark in AFL/VFL history ......and one of only 3 indigenous players to reach the mark......in AFL/VFL history. This AFL/VFL history bullcrap irritates the hell out of me. For starters, one Graham Vivien (Polly) Farmer springs to mind .......356 games of LEAGUE footy across the WAFL/VFL/WAFL....but no, that doesn't count. Like hell it doesn't......the Mexicans live in wonder in their own little bubble, denying the existence of anything other than their own self centred narcissism.

I cringe every time I see a Rioli playing for Richmond.
Watching the Richmond game on Friday night it was great to see Brian Taylor actually give a rundown on where the Rioli dynasty began. Spent a good minute on their history at South Fremantle.
Would have opened the eyes of a few Mexicans.
All AFL games/history should be recognised as you say JayJay, well put.

Just out of interest re this thread line - how many combined  games did Syd Jackson play for East Perth and Carlton

He was one of my all time favourite players - great balance - great mover - and a beautiful drop kick on the run

You see him now - like in the paper - in the media - like there was a podcast on his life story - i listened to a year or 2  back - like he is originally from the Moore River area of WA

But of course now - he is a frail old man - because he would be well into his 70s - however  back in the day - he was one powerful unit - i saw him off the field - approx say 3-4 years after he had finished up with Carlton

I can picture him now - the shoulders on him - and he just had  that look - not that he would have - done anything - but he just had that appearance - look dont  mess with me - otherwise you know - you could find yourself sitting on your aarse before you could say Jack Robinson

Just in appearance - re the current players - not in ability - this bloke is just a battler - but Quenton  Narkle of Geelong - just the wavy hair and the eyes - he reminds me a bit of Syd

253 in total (across East Perth, Carlton before finishing off with 13 games at  Glenelg). Hailed from Roelands Mission, won two SWFL F& B's  playing at South Bunbury (Hayward Medal I think it is called) prior to starting with East Perth courtesy of his mentor Dr Ern Manea. Far from frail, a great articulate advocate for youth, working back in the South West. A magnificent player ......Saw him kick 7 goals in a Preliminary final on one leg against Souths one day, superb.

Finished up at Glenelg - i never knew that

7 goals in a PF against Souths - George would have loved that - he would have had the handbrake on everyone of them
  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
Syd kicked 7.6, East Perth won 20.18 to 13.20. Ol mate George would have been beside himself.....Gero only kicked 1 and Don Grljusich also played and Charlie Osmetti kicked 5 for Souths.

Just on John Gerovich - i didnt really see that much of him

But was he as good as the legend makes out - re the high flying marks - and was he a good alround player more importantly - or was it a mark or nothing

I have seen the famous one over the East Fremantle bloke - thus was he Modra like

Reading regards the 1968 WAFL Grand Final.. player ran onto the ground pulled a hamstring--- was replaced by a player who had just played in the reserves winning grand final so he played in two premierships on same day---  off the cuff---who was he?

JJ to think that absolute champion indigenous footballers that have played well over 200 games of LEAGUE FOOTBALL in WA & SA like Stephen Michael, Bill Dempsey, Keith Narkle, Ted Kilmurray, Larry Kickett, Kevin Hill, David Kantilla etc are not even acknowledged by most Victorians (Cisco & others who were exposed to WAFL & SANFL footy before 1990 are exempted) because they did not play in the old vfl shows their utter ignorance and arrogance to anything outside of the Vic border!

  • jumjum    3,581 posts
Stephen Michael is in the AFL Hall of Fame. I think that is a pretty big recognition from the Victorians.
A few of the other players you have mention are handy footballers. But some of them named wouldn't touch wind on Stephen Michael.

Very good footballers all those mentions. But only one Stephen Michael. Absolute freak

i get your sentiment, but you still have your local league.
    the VFL does not.
the AFL is basically VFL with some existing/new teams from outside victoria added, to try and make it a national competition.
like it or not, the VFL was the premier league in the country.
which of course is why there was so many champions from other states that aspired to play VFL.

I have no idea how many games Farmer played overall, I just know he was freakishly good
Probably a good percentage of the best ever players in VFL history started in other states.
But VFL WAS the forerunner of AFL
leagues in WA or SA or TAS were not, as they still exist. in their own right

The AFL started in 1990 and Melbourne have now won their first premiership. There is still a VFL which started in 1877 and now has teams from NSW and Queensland in it, much like the VFL had the West Coast team in its competition from 1987.
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
the VFL has nothing to do with the old VFL.
The VFL is comprised of what was the secondary league VFA, and some suburban league clubs too.
Most of those VFL clubs are aligned with AFL clubs, and is where those out of form, or not good enough play.
It is basically the reserves team the AFL has for vic based teams

Melbourne has now won T H I R T E E N premierships in the league it has ALWAYS been a part of, like it or not, that is F A C T.

In your eyes but not mine. How many have Brisbane won? How many have Sydney won?
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
Brisbane has won 3 from memory, and despite what they try to imply, have never had anything to do with the now defunct Fitzroy.
    2 different entities.
Swans i can't remember, but the swans of now, ARE Sth Melbourne relocated, thus whatever the total premierships, then that is what they have won.

I have also been referred to as a narcissist and self centred before, and on this very site among others, but never by anybody I know.
They are terms one should only use, when they are sure what they are talking about.
Argue a point, but leave the unnecessary stuff alone.

The AFL never learns hey - what about worrying about things a bit closer to home

Zempilas - what a shocking blunder - snubbed the flag winning coach Goodwin

One of the traditions of the AFL GF - is the winning coach gets to speak - and if the side you happen to barrack for wins - everyone has got utter joy - you want to hear from your coach - your basically hanging on every word  he says - but Zempilas mucked it up and snubbed him

The mistakes that guy has made - i can remember a Geel game - big Dawson Simpson i think it was - had a shocking run with injury - missed alot of games - so 1st 10 minutes - BZ - rattled off all the details - injuries etc - and when he had last played - Simpson made his comeback game the previous week - he had played the previous week - how could you make that error - but he did . And how many players he gets mixed up

But those type of mistakes  pale into insignificance - re the horrendous mistake he made Sat night

But he is probably good bloke you know - hah - hah - hah

Basil said it wasn't om the run sheet, and by the time it was realised - the moment had passed.

I really don't get all the entertainment thing - its just an American thing. I would rather sit at the football break discussing the game, going for a leak , getting a drink.

Even at normal Eagles and Dockers game you can't hear yourself think, music and lighting blinding your senses. I don't need to be "entertained" 100% of the time.

Call me old fashioned, but aren't we there for the football. Watching rap singers, and others singing songs I have never heard of is not my thing. The national anthem was agonisingly slow.

Unless in a corporate box, I can not be bothered going. Having said that, the Channel 7 telecast was excellent, They didn't over do the ads, and I enjoyed the ABC720 commentary as opposed to BT and others shouting and crossing to female special comments etc.

However, I was proud to be a West Aussie on Saturday - it was a magnificent event at a magnificent venue - couldn't imagine the MCG having the ability to replicate the same.

as regards that last sentence above.....
unless you are a Victorian perhaps.
WA did it well, by the looks of it, but being a long suffering Demon supporter, I wish it was held at the MCG.
    Next year hopefully.

Dees supporter - just enjoy the win

As a supporter there is nothing better the following year - when your team is constantly referred to as the reigning premiers - its utterly beautiful - you wont get sick of that i will tell you

As Titus Oreilly said "Melbourne supporters get to rejoice a win in the first Grand Final to be held outside Australia".

Gee, I hope you're not suggesting any hints of self centredness from those that perceive a diminished universe Chariots. Some Mexicans are always surprised to find out there are other time zones in existence.

Hassa Mann - the former South Frem flag winning Capt/Coach and Melb  legend  - the very enjoyable video of his time at South Frem was put up a while back

Late last week - there is about a 3 minute video of him - at his home - re the upcoming GF - his thoughts - and when he was at the Dees = playing - and winning flags

He said 64 was his 3rd flag - he got 2 others earlier - i think it was 60 and 61 - i might be wrong their

What caught my attention - he said the 1st flag he won - was his 1st year at Melb and he was 18

And he said their legendary coach  at the time Norm Smith ( who won something like 6 flags in 7 years etc ) he said he gave him 2 bits of advice . I dont know if it was in the rooms before the game - or during the week i cant remember - he said Smith put 1 hand on one shoulder and said son - this might be the only GF you play in ( well fair enough nothing much in that ) however he then put his other hand on his other shoulder and said " Son - good sides dont lose grand finals "

Titus is the king of satire JayJay and his comments are always tongue in cheek. He did mention in one tweet that a coffee costs $17 in Perth and he is not far wrong.

i just read this, and i am hoping my memory is good!
i never knew he was from wa, but his melbourne number from memory....29???
    champion centreman
and to really test myself the wingers in '64 might have been barry vagg & frank(bluey) adams?

  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
Hassa Mann came over to South Fremantle as Captain Coach late in his career (1969 or 1970). He had already played in a bunch of Premierships for Melbourne and I remember it was touted as a real coup to get him over to Souths. Brian Dixon would have played on one wing in 1964 I would reckon......was always referred to as "Champion winger Brian Dixon" in both football and political blurbs at the time but maybe he didn't.
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
i think you are correct for brian dixon......i used to idolise him but then he became a member of parliament and i stopped liking him!
adams must have been a rover.....it was a long time ago.

and then, and then.....i went to mr google and....

my memory is a glass half full!
i got the 29 correct at least.
