Yes, it was round 1 of the Pacing Cup Heats in 1980. Steelo drew gate 1, Satinover 2 on the back line. Both wanted the 1x1 and Steelo got there first, easing Satinover 3 wide (no contact made) and then Max took off and went straight to the top. Satinover hung on to win by a head (his 17th successive win) in 1.58.9 over the 1900m which was a World Record for a half mile track.

[Leading into the Pacing Cup, Satinover had won his heat and Final of the1979 Australian Pacing Championship (from the stand) in November  and the Anniversary Cup and was then given 4 weeks off prior to the Pacing Cup Series. Pure Steel returned from injury during that 4 weeks and won a FFA and a Mount Eden Mile in 1.58.6 over Garry John].

A day later, it was reported that Satinover had "broken down", later changed to a sprain and a bruised hoof. He returned to racing 10 weeks later. Pure Steel won his round 2 heat, was beaten by Lord Maselle in round 3 and won the final breezing outside Lord Maselle to beat Merak and Garry John with Les Poyser driving him after Coulson was given a controversial suspension from the week before. A week later, with Coulson back driving, he breezed and won the 3200m Fremantle Cup off 35m.

Sationver's 2 runs leading into the match race on May 2nd were a whole lot better than just runs.....he was pretty awesome to take his streak to 19 wins in succession, albeit win 18 was against moderate opposition. But he was just 5, Steelo was rising 9 and many thought it would be "All Over, Its Satinover"......but he had no chance, George Grljusich backed him!!!!!

Just as well George is no longer with us JayJay he could sue you for making a statement like that.

George too legal action against Gino de Mori for a similar statement in the West.

Very good Jay Jay. He did mention thinking it was a record. On the night who started favourite in the heat?. Did that record  1900m. W.R. last long? ---- Did hands turn , sit outside satinover and nearly beat him prior to match race.

George and I went way back...... every time we caught up, we would sit and have a cry about Red Vicar galloping out at the Interdom GF at Albion Park....still brings a tear to my eye.He told the story one night at A Deanmill Footy Club "Sportsmans" Night with David Rhys Jones, not long before he got crook. I had to leave the Hall lol.

STG, I will have a rummage.....I have the Match Race racebook lurking somewhere in my office. I think the record lasted for ages because they didn't race over 1900m very often.

    Talking of George

Does anyone remember that show on ABC TV way back then on a Friday night  - it might have been called Sportsnight

Dennis Cometti  use to host it - i really enjoyed it - like in the football season - hed have Keith Slater previewing the WAFL games the next day - like Cometti was coaching West Perth at that time as well

And they would cross to George out at GP- and they would show the races live - might have been  just the races that were on - when the show was on - might be 3-4 races covered etc

They might have even hosted the show sometimes from the track - i can remember seeing Big Dennis striding through the betting ring ( he wasnt betting ) at Richmond Raceway one night - might have been the night they held the Aust Derby final their

But it was a tip top show

George was remarkable.... in lots of ways.....at those aforementioned "Sportsmans Nights"....No script, no notes, no nothing, all off the cuff. Sadly, he wasn't that well....and in between the stories and the Auctions (best fundraiser I have ever seen, he would prize $1,000's out of some pretty well sealed wallets....when you got him to do a night, success was guaranteed), he would have to go outside for a gasper or 7. I wasn't a smoker but he would grab me, c'mon JJ, outside and talk trots with me. Freezing bloody cold, we would be outside, bull dust flowing, reliving the past. "C'mon George, you're on again" someone would shout out. In he would go and hold the mob spellbound for another hour....deliberately baiting the  interjectors, stirring up Eagles supporters, everyone had a target on their back, he had done his homework of course, knew the history of the League,  unbelievable yarns, working the crowd like you can't imagine.. it was a masterclass, one of many I was privileged to watch over the years. Rhys Jones couldn't believe how popular he was. I explained to him about George's country based ABC Trot calls and Sportstalk, and that everyone, and I mean everyone, knew and sort of loved or hated him.  And at the end of the night, "how did we go Son, raise a quid?" Yes George, great result, beyond what we imagined ( I was Treasurer of the club, those funds literally enabled us to survive). Alright Son, don't forget, I love coming down here, any time. And by the way, if the Vicar had stepped, he sh*ts in but Prince Palladin was a better horse (with a wink, a smile and that gorilla type handshake).

Used to have a few punts on friday trots when Geoge G & George Manning were the radio combo. Cometti was the TV link man & compere before he was Cometti. Usually played tennis with a few friends then retired to Rod Starkies house to watch the replays between the second last and last live on the ABC... and have a couple of beers/scotch and cokes.
No -one listened to a race during the tennis so it was all live for us.
Great fun....especially having a laugh at George's expense when you knew he was on a fave and it got rolled.

Oh yes..I still have Vinyl recordings of Lionel, mid to late 60's, August Cup, Invitational Stakes, FFA's, October Gift etc.... breakfast radio on 6KY and then he did the trots. He was a classic, not perhaps the most precise but you got the general idea. Wasn't hard to work out who he backed but listening back nowadays with the crowd interaction, they are brilliant for what he was trying to impart.

Having attended a few 'Sportsmans Nights' over the years JJ I can totally vouch what you have posted, George was the master at "baiting" the crowd albeit totally all in good humour.
George used to get me riled at times with his biased calls of SF games vs SD but gee wiz he was good value and a WA broadcasting legend & icon.
Sportstalk on a Saturday morning was essential listening with caller Albert from Dianella always a "regular" to get George going haha.
Just to show George was not just a great sports broadcaster but his WA history pieces with another WA broadcasting great Bob Maumill on 6pr in the years before he passed away was also fantastic radio.
    He is sorely missed.

George was the MC at my 40th Birthday so we also had a long history.

We owned a horse together with Brett Lenton in French Kiss Trunkey trained by Fred Kersley. I never really rated her and when Roy Annear started making offers I was keen to sell but George rated the mare and was reluctant to sell.

Offers went from $10k and when it reached $50k I convinced George that we should let her go gear and all. It was a good decision as she did little to repay Roy's outlay.

A good decision in the end...wasn't much good and never threw anything, George would have been pleased to get a "result" and no doubt claimed he "made a good call".

Seems to be a bit of a George nostalgia thread.....he had finished his GP on course calling duties but they used to use him for the ABC Interdominion coverage and back he would come like nothing had changed, such as this call of Jack Morris winning in 1993. Think he may have had a shilling on Westburn Grant.

Was there that night,Talk about crowded couldn't even turn your head for a optic nerve,Remmeber Hall snr won consolation  Valley Champ----Nat Rasmussen, and her sisters had a race under saddle.

George would have had a few darts the night Taipan Trunkey his horse was going for the third leg of triple crown. after winning 2&3 yearold legs---The result was going to be a 100K sure she ran below par.no cigar

Didn't run below par as was knocked over in the back straight.  Not sure George ever forgave Fred for being too over confident.

  • Suvaljko no problems,, Warwick ????
Might as well just take the whips off them ridiculous.

I am hearing murmurs that there will be a consortium of the states leading drivers who want to sit in front of the stewards and ask for an adjustment in the rule and that stewarding of the rule be consistent accross the board or there might be a hold up on a big meeting in a couple of weeks.
  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,322 posts
I know horseman say you need it etc

But when you sit back quietly and think about it - your hitting that animal ( which is under stress /strain ) with a whip

Drivers complaining about fines ( and look at alot of big races - they cant help themselves ) then get rid of the whip

Few comments some time ago saying LBH is past it.
Think he’s waking a few of the young guns up a bit.
Great to see he’s adding something to driving we have been missing for a long time (Markos comments).
BTW he’s forgotten more than most know about driving.

What’s the percentage of leaders that win? I would say it’s much much lower for Lindsay on a leader, launch everything you’ll win every now and then I suppose

Ahh right, when I was a kid my old man would take a few horses down to Perth from kal to race over the January school holidays and we would keep them at Bernie Cushings old place on Nicholson road as my old man was best mates with Robert cushing,Sean Harneys backed onto the property from memory from Armadale road and dad was mates with him Sean to,when Sean passed his wife Vicki gave the cart to Cush who then sold it to my old man,I’m pretty sure it was quick hitch way back then and dad converted it to tie down.as it happens I drove my first winner in it.i moved to Perth and my old man dropped it off at my joint for me to keep.

Without LBH being awake early on in the 1st and prepared to roll the dice I don't think you run first 3 Rocket. Send him a thank you card. Superb drive to get beaten...made it an interesting spectacle.
I notice Stephen Reed has got Lindsay on Bletchley Park from gate 1 in the Fremantle Cup .....most tactically aggressive driving engagement for years.
