Fait Accompi won the first hundred thousand dollar Perth cup back in 1972 which then was the same prizemoney as the previous running of the Melbourne cup . I think the VRC in that year (1972) increased the prizemoney of that years Melbourne cup so it was worth more than the Perth cup

Perth Racing has asked RWWA to consult with industry on the possibility of reverting the distance of the
Perth Cup [G2] to 3200m. The race was run over the traditional distance of 3200m up until 2008, with the
subsequent nine runnings at 2400m.
A change in distance of the Perth Cup would of course also require changes to the lead-up races and I
have attached a full draft program to this effect. Please note that it is intended to leave the distance of
the weight-for-age Ted van Heemst Stakes [G2] at 2100m as a target for horses coming out of the
Kingston Town Classic [G1] over 1800m two-weeks prior.
WA Oaks
A proposal was considered last year to reduce the distance of the WA Oaks [G3] from the classic distance
of 2400m to 2200m as part of a restructure of the three-years-old fillies autumn program. A change in
distance did not proceed at that time, however stakeholders were advised a more thorough consultation
process on the concept would be undertaken following the 2017 running of the race.
The 2017 WA Oaks again attracted only 9 starters, with the third placed horse beaten five lengths. It is
appropriate that further consultation takes place in relation to a reduction of the distance of the Oaks from
2400m to 2200m in an attempt to arrest the declining field size, and quality of participation. A reduction
in distance for the Oaks would also result in a revision of distances for the lead-up program.
It is noted that the WATC Derby was run one week after the WA Oaks in 2017 and the three fillies who
competed in both races finished second, third and fourth in the Derby.
Submissions
It is important that RWWA receive feedback on the distance of the Perth Cup and WA Oaks from all
stakeholder groups and to this end I am requesting submissions be made to RWWA prior to Friday, 16
June 2017.
Given the expected level of interest in these matters, RWWA will also be inviting submissions directly
individual stakeholders and other interested parties through our website. Submissions can be emailed
to racing@rwwa.com.au
Yours faithfully

The industry has a much larger problem....it is in decline. That is why you have small fields.
Jay Rooney@Jay_Rooney
surely not.
would not wa make a decision to change, and then have to get the ok(or otherwise) from the national committee?
they can't make the decision to change(or not) and keep the current status themselves can they?
^^ my thoughts exactly.
a pattern committee...who does it consist of?
The distances of two of Western Australia’s oldest thoroughbred races, the TABtouch Perth Cup and
the Kirin Megumi-WA Oaks, will remain at 2,400 metres following today’s inaugural meeting of the
Western Australian Pattern Committee (WAPC) at Perth Racing’s Lee-Steere House premises.
Representatives of Perth Racing, Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA), Thoroughbred
Breeders Western Australia, the Western Australian Provincial Thoroughbred Racing Association, the
Western Australian Racehorse Owners Association and the Western Australian Racehorse Trainers
Association attended today’s meeting to review the submissions of industry stakeholders.
Perth Racing commissioned RWWA to commence consultation with industry stakeholders regarding
the TABtouch-Perth Cup distance, specifically reverting to 3,200m nine years after Cats Fun won its
most recent edition run over two miles. RWWA also used the one-month consultation period to
canvas opinions about the Kirin Megumi-WA Oaks trip and the autumn’s major fillies races.
“The TABtouch-Perth Cup is Western Australia’s most iconic thoroughbred race so, naturally, there’s
been considerable public interest in Perth Racing, through RWWA, asking the industry for its views
about the event’s distance,” said Professor John Yovich AM, Managing Director of Perth Racing.
“Perth Racing’s position throughout the consultation process was that there had to be widespread
industry support for the TABtouch-Perth Cup to revert to 3,200m. That level of support wasn’t there
and that’s why the WAPC, on which Perth Racing sits, resolved to keep the race at 2,400m.
“Similarly, the WAPC felt there was insufficient support to warrant any amendments to the fillies
program for the coming season, although the distances of the Kirin Megumi-WA Oaks and its
supporting races in the autumn months are something it will review on an ongoing basis.
“One thing that will change, however, is the date of the TABtouch-Perth Cup, with the $500,000
Group Two race reverting to its traditional home of New Year’s Day. There’ll be no better place to be
on Monday 1 January 2018 than Ascot Racecourse watching the 132nd TABtouch-Perth Cup.”

that is seriously funny.
wa might have some nice horses, but they don't have many races these days worthy of black type status.
maybe the meetings of the esteemed wapc are well catered!
nothing like a nice 5 course degustation on the house.
i wonder who the members are.
