    I've noticed that the chance to "win" a race is a bigger lure than prizemoney. I reckon it's why so many horses that can be competitive on Saturdays choose to race midweek. After all, a trainer is only going to get 10% of any increased prizemoney and will have to pay tax on that.
     Tipping or backing a winner however can be quite lucrative and tax free. It's a huge incentive. Not to mention the trainer's "strike rate" being so important to many.
     I reckon this initiative will just mean that horses that can't win anywhere will now prefer to run on Saturdays.

    For the chance to pick up $400 Rodent?

    I don't think that'll be the case, $400 pretty much covers costs for the day, a 10% owner getting $40 isn't going to send a flurry of horses to a Saturday meet.

      Chance to win a midweek provincial WITH Westspeed is worth nearly $19k.  Or run a 'really good" chance with your best hope being a place.... or $400.

      The only horses that will probably be taking up the offer are the ones with the same chance of missing a place cheque at the provincials.  And won't that add excitement....

      But at least their trying something, and hopefully I'm wrong....again,

    I'm all for anything that is perceived to increase Saturday field sizes and subsidise the cost of racing for owners, so long as stewards are prepared to be pretty ruthless with horses that are genuinely non competitive and only there to make up numbers. If half the field has no chance of winning we may as well run maiden races all day.

    Positive move on the part of RWWA to assist owners with minor training costs for horses that are currently out of sorts.

    Now if we could just get horses above the minimum rating only, then Saturday events would be of a higher quality.

    So does this mean that RWWA are simply throwing their hat into the ring just because other States in Australia are doing this? Or surely there must be a little (or even a bit more) to it than just that? Whatever the reason may be, I do like the idea of evening out the prize money a little bit more as it will still be a nice amount of $$$ for winning and it won't discrease that satisfying feeling that owners/syndicates get out of their Horse(s)winning a race. That too me (the enjoyment factor), is the most important thing when it comes to having a share in a Racehorse.

    If you don't give every kid a medal for even participation, then there is hell to play, counselling, parental litigation ....to me, its all part of the problem in society where instant and constant gratification  have resulted in selfish "look at me" types running around unable to deal with the reality of competition and need a personal therapist everytime some one says "no, yo didn''t get that job, it went to a superior applicant" or "No, you can't have that loan to buy an $800 phone on a $150 per month Data Plan and a $4,000 TV, your dole cheque isn't enough to handle the repayments"...an exaggeration?...probably but life is competitive, what are we doing rewarding either poor horses or poor training or poor riding? Complete garbage in my view....but then I was against the removal of keeping scores in Under 11 junior footy ....when the kids new the scores to the nearest point anyway...who are they kidding? Summed up in 3 words Falc....why reward mediocrity. As a I said at the beginning of this thread, merit certificates for those that finish 11th to 14th? The world isn't like that, life is competitive.

    Its a nice gesture to try to give a bit back to owners, and it wont detract much from the winning purse. I'm just concerned that it will encourage slow horses to go around every week. If they accidentally pick up a 4th or 5th in a small field once a month, then the monthly fees are just about paid for a horse that really is contributing nothing to most races.

    As @The_Bull stated above...I'm hoping the Stewards get onto any noncompetitive horses, and kick them out of prime meetings.

    Hopefully, there will be plenty of 'ad libbing' room for the stewards to make any adjustments that may need to be put in place so common sense can prevail Rio.

    Always remember horse racing is pyramid based. There a lot more of  slower horses than fast one s ,hellva lot more owners trainers and jockeys,circle of involvement is sadly its with slow ones don't forget the twisted legs ones that didn't get there to be called too slow.          . The normal battling jockeys   raceday   preparation is the same whether he has one or three rides for the day   field sizes is the key to his businesss operation....Soon leaves the industry when the return doesn't equate to the risk.Then we all squeal this not enough jockeys for three meets. on the sameday in .w.a.......Somewhere along the line,.the people that put the show must be rewarded, this is a start.....There still is fifty to hundred winners in the game . Like a dollar every time heard this one howd that win.

    Ok genius....lets extrapolate .....sports betting.......Q.Why do AFL footballers on losing sides get paid.

    A. Because if they weren't the perennial losers wouldn't be able to field a side.

    and....without them there ain't no game.

    The contraction of horse ownership has been snowballing for years and so has the shrivelling interest in the hands on aspect.

    What's your definition of mediocrity and no hopers mate ?? It's just another brainless negative derogatory slogan chanted by mugs that are locked in fully paid members of the flat earth society.

    How many are you paying up for ???

    Look around next time you go to an ordinary raceday .....the grandstand is like Gods waiting room

    Anything to entice new owners into the sport / increase field sizes / increase hope / increase yields

    They already do by paying back to 6th in all races at the trots. Paying back to 10th is a bridge too far for me in what is a competition.
