multis? as BL said, just ask dookums Humphries and my old mate "bill the bookie" in Sydney..they became millionaires offering 3 places anywhere in oz. eg if you picked 3 placed horses at 4/1....that's 12/1 for your dollar. just try and see how hard it is, bomber. that's why I got hammered for telling the guys on punters club they were morons....bit harsh..just say "reaching for the stars". try it for a few weeks, hyperthetically, and see how you go.

Those that made their millions offering 3 leg all up places didn't do so because of the magnitude of losing bets, although that helps, they did so as it is far easier to balance your book...

In the days, and I'm going back 60-70 years, when Bookie Bill in Sydney, and Dookums Humphries in Melbourne, were operating, there were 40,000 going to the races every Saturday, there were 400 bookies on track, and all of them had absolutely no trouble balancing their books, or "working round" as they called it.
The 4 place card that Dookums operated on, made him a multi, because thousands of people every Saturday would go for the big lick of the ice cream.
It was a time when wages were three pounds a week and if you had sixpence, that's five cents, on a four place and it got up, you could win an extra ten bob which could feed a family of 6 for a week.
Dookums, who was a very private man, once told me that there were weeks when he'd collect, and he had plenty of blokes working for him, five thousand pounds, and NO ONE picked 4 placed horses. You could buy a house in a top suburb then for five thousand quid.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to win with an all up bet.
But think about it. How many stories a year do you read where Tabcorp or any Corporate, who love the publicity, actually relate a story about how a bloke outlayed $10.00 and won.
I can't remember anyone on our punters Club being successful with an all up, and if there was one, then that's over a 7 month period with a hundred or more bets.
It's a quick way to the poor house if you treat it seriously.
But it's a lot of fun if you just have $10.00 on in the knowledge that you are 1,000 to one or more of winning.
I don't know if Falcon agrees with me, but that is not how your post came across.
To me, anyway, you stated, and it appeared from first hand knowledge, that those who made their millions through the all up place, did so because it was easy for them to balance their books. I was just pointing out that this was not really correct.
I don't reckon it's anybody's business how people punt.
Nor were Falcon or I suggesting that it is.
If someone wants to take all ups, or only take multiples and that is how they derive their pleasure from punting, good luck to them.
Some bet win only, others place only, and others love the each way. Some have more the place than the win.
There is no 100% right way to punt.
All we were doing, was point out the pitfalls associated with all up betting as being probably the worst choice someone punting can make, as a path to hopefully winning at the caper.
I have treated our punters club as an added interest on a Saturday while I watch the football.
I haven't been too engaged in personal punting all that much over the last 12 months as I have other priorities which require my attention,
So I really don't care, nor have I cared which method our punters club members have decided to utilize to have their bets.
However, if there is someone out there who, over a 20 or so year period of punting, has made a success of all up win or all up place betting, please let me know your secret.
