What were peoples thoughts on Demerit? From what I saw he threw nice enough types but like this sale in general his results were quite poor.

There was a great deal of variance in type amongst the fillies. Also had a look at a couple of the colts and thought the same.
Had xrays checked on a few and nothing untoward was in the vets report on any of them. Overall and generally speaking IMHO would say they could be considered a little on the small side but well put together.

Damien now who's a tad precious you may have people believing you but you are not the messiah you think you are.
I have just re-read every post in this thread and you have made some big statements 31 A+ horses, 39 A horses, Group winners a certainty and only checked 16 or so x-rays yet only bought 3 so I am allowed to be a bit sceptical .
And don't worry I will pick 5 out of my 15 when I'm ready .

Thought he was good enough to bid on 324 and got him. I was genuinely surprised at the $24,000 though, as I thought he would bring more. So perhaps current first and second season WA Stallions are deemed at best to be Trainers horses. As a type his draft looked small to medium in size, but with potential to develop. With results, Kent Johnston from Taunton Vale Stud, and the Owners of Demerit, should be able to attract a larger band of broodmares in season's ahead, and with that perhaps some quality.

It shouldn't be difficult, as the market had definite opinions on his opposition.

Octavius, slight correction, it was Ma Sheela of the Orange People who said Tough Titties, although it's a comment that's got Rose all over it hahaha.

I was more interested in the fillies however had a look at a few of the colts.
Thought the pick of them was the one you secured and the Pia Pia.

    Good luck with him Damo

Really Spudley I don't know you from a bar of soap & I read your posts on breeding & opinions on racing two year olds with interest. You make some very good points but every time Damien posts you have to have a dig regardless whether what he is saying is correct, obviously you have a beef with him. I don't always agree with what Damien says or the way he goes about it but sometimes it is best to suck it up & let it go.

Huckfinn whilst Damien keeps making himself a target by going on with all his salesman diatribe I will keep on throwing darts obviously I must be getting close to the bullseye.
He states tonight his 3 lots were bought for his clients so they are the ones risking their money not him.

@Legless @Damien Wyer i have heard a fair few say that Lonhros are typically small as babies and start to fill out a little later? This years bunch are substantially bigger than last.
I remember last year when 'Puteri Jewel' went through was sold and then the group who had purchased weren't happy due to her X-rays hence she was taken back by owner... Bad choice that was for the 1st buyers.
It can be fairly demoralising for breeders when you pay 6,000-50,000 and then all the costs and come to the sales and can only raise 10 in the ring. It's tough for breeders here at the moment and correct me if I am wrong but maybe some higher profile/better bred mares in the state would help boost sales?

I also have followed this thread because I genuinely am interested to hear people's opinion on what is being offered and I really look forward to seeing the results of the top 5 good luck guys.

i would tend to agree @Pink_Blue that this years crop had a bit more size than last years. To me they were not that small to steer clear of and until we see them as 3 year olds we wont really know what they will furnish into.
My guess is they will be very nice horses - only time will tell

Be also throws a lot of roarers, so that's another risk you take with him

As an occasional buyer over the past 5-6yrs, it has always been the mares that have been the problem. Its hard for the bulls to add to a mare if the mare and her family have done nothing. There was one that i looked at - may have been a lot more - that had produced 7 foals, 1 to race as a 900m winner and it was in our premium sale!!!! And amazingly it sold for over $20k.
And now anyone with a good mare, sends it east due to the bulls coming down to the level of mares... Dont get me wrong, for the level of racing we have over here they are probably well matched.
But if you have the dollars and can afford to buy genuinely well bred horses form the east coast or from an east coast based breeder, then as long as the horse is sound you can be very confident of gettign a lot of money back...
Hence why the sales topper went for so much. When the truly good one comes along..The right price will be paid. The also rans will only get a price if you have enough people bidding on it..And MM didn't get enough people along to this sale to drive pricing.

Falcon are you referring to the Lonhro's?
He was champion sure for a while so he must've done something right along the way.
I've started to notice more and more that trainers here in Perth particularly will stick to one certain stallion and continue to buy from the same family, due to familiarity I am guessing or possibly because they know of the potential they have.
With these fairly ordinary sales prices the idea was thrown around amongst a few breeders to possibly hold a ready to run sale whereby people could then put realistic reserves and if they weren't met it gives them the option to take them home, prepare them and bring them back later on and that way it also gives buyers a better idea of how they develop. I know there will be a fair few arguments for and against but wondering what thoughts were.
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,950 posts
I think we need a bit more than just a Ready to Run Sale. They were held here up until about 6 years ago, in fact Famous Roman came through one after being sold at the previous February Yearling Sale. But a lot of folks thought that ready to run horses were those with issues that couldn't make Premier sales, and therefore they were to be avoided. I would like to see a return to RTR sales, but Vendors need more confidence before they would support them.

The problem is bigger than just that.

Believe it or not but I think touchstone should get a pat on the back. A few people got 30 40k for p5 and the odd ve. Some of those people only paid 2k for a service fee. And I believe ts themselves sold every yearling. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Pink_BluePink_Blue    74 posts
@Dale that is great and it's great when people can go home and take none back. I find it hard to see how some stay in the game. Having had a look at it all up with a service fee of about $6G it works out to be close to 25G to get to the sale ring. I don't know how some do it taking that kind of hit year in and year out.
They can do it tough sometimes.

In fairness to those who have selected five yearlings plus two reserves, if you would like to play in this little competition for a 20"x30" photo canvas, please have your selections in by the end of March.

    Is that fair enough ?

Well right now we have about five contestants, and that includes me. Not even Spudley has selected a top five for all his comments on this topic.

Let's make it the end of Feb then ? OK ?
