Has any one, especially owners via WA Racehorse Owners Association (WAROA) heard anything about this?

RWWA have been thinking about this idea for some time. At the Northam 150th Anniversary Dinner, I was seated at Richard Burt's table, and we discussed the question of Owner's. I suggested to him that finding more shouldn't be their first priority, retaining the ones they have should be the initial focus. In my opinion, the body that represents owner's, WAROA, no longer does. They have lost direction since Harvey Crossman decided to wear two hats and be both Chairman of WAROA and Vice Chairman (now Committee Member) of Perth Racing. This simply is not objective.

WAROA themselves are nothing more than party planners these days. Seldom heard from, when they are it is a whimper, and they are best known for their functions. They as a body have no political clout as they don't have the backbone to speak against the futility of Perth Racing decisions which in some way, shape or form, affect the other smaller clubs around the State.

So now RWWA has decided to try and reinvigorate racing ownership in WA. As far as main owners goes, that is half the problem. Too  much concentration and influence is allowed to a smaller and smaller number of owners as they participation rate falls due to the appalling state of City racing in the last two years. nothing is healthy about only a handful controlling the greater interests of the masses.

I'm glad RWWA have acted before it is too late.

im still trying to work out what the main objective is here. is this it? "It will include invitation-only events, merchandising and access to behind-the-scenes race-day experiences with stewards, vets, the on-course race caller and starters."

Also what are the costs of joining? All I got from the article was that Coxy gets nervous ahead of a horse race. Nothing against Coxy, I love the guy but I cant see this initiate benefiting me unless I have missed something.....?

RWWA are trying to enhance the experience for owners. More need to be retained and more again need to be farmed from the prospects pool. Making it sound too elitist though I believe to be a mistake. I would suggest they act with caution in that regard.

If there is any cost at all to this experience, it will fail.

     "More need to be retained"

If I wasn't a winner I would be long gone! If you want retention, you need to give these people that winning taste! and they cannot offer it, its the luck of the game! This is just a rival group to WAROA which in fact will dilute both pools of people making them both weak organisations.

I think it's been poorly thought out Rio, if they are that concerned with retention how about offering minimum prize money for every starter in a race. I.e finish 6 - last everyone gets $500?

I've been told they are meeting with WAROA tonight to discuss things...hope to hear some feedback in the next few days.

Paraletic, the question of retention was my suggestion. I don't know if that became something that they intended to address.

sorry mate I misread that. So they want to be party planners then? Looks like there will be race to book the committee room.

Are they going to copy the Racing Victoria model? That works and when you have a horse racing they actually are very good with free entry and a room that has food and 'several' free drinks at the city tracks.
Be interesting. Also appears they haven't communicated much/anything to the larger owners. Have spoken to a few and newspaper article was first try had heard of it
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts
no one knows much about pinky...the above wotks at the city tracks already...free entry, free drink and food in an Owners Bar...but the above is what i've heard may be the direction they want to go for all tracks...

i'm very much down the minnow end of owners and no-one that i know down here has heard much either..bit of a mystery, so i wonder who they consulted with????
  • LeglessLegless    5,108 posts

Rio, I would assume they consulted some of the owners who are on the PR Committee ??
Possibly the wrong end of the spectrum as they are also breeders and big owners but again I am only guessing. I would've thought an open forum where people could put forward suggestions would've helped.
They needed to do a lot more Marketing and PR before this launch and start it much much earlier to build awareness. I honestly hope it works. WA really does need that younger generation of owners who come from outside racing circles to help build up the sport and brand. Now I know people will say 'build up the sport and brand?' But take this as an example, I only renewed my Young Membership the week before Perth Cup and I was member 69. The business could be in a world of pain(worse than currently) in 10 years.

have spoken with PR Committee members today and no-ones known much more than the newspaper article!!!!!

Any promo of ownership will be a bonus...i like what WAROA does but they quite rightly focus on those who are owners already....lets hope they are better at organizing the benefits than they are promoting the program!!

Whats the criteria for this exclusive club? How many horses do you have to own to get your wings?

I spoke to Coxy and few of the other people at the Magic Millions event on Saturday and it's about value adding and from what I can tell trying to bring in new people who are there for some fun and are not really the bigger owners, so the people who have a few % here and there. Things like breakfast after track work, watching races from Darren box, going out to the barriers for a start and generally getting a bit of behind the scenes access.
