Moreira vs Pike-The race to 100 winners

As of race 3 today Willie Pike has ridden 53 metropolitan winners to Moreira's 55 in HK. Neither shows any signs of slowing up, but last season Joao's premiership chances were cruelled by a succession of three-meeting suspensions last season

I think if Pike rides 100 winners it Perth it would be a hell of an achievement-even accounting for the fact that 2nd and 4th in the premiership are over in Melb..

He almost should ride 100 winners to be fair.

Bowman , Nash etc etc they would easily ride 100 with the same rides.

    Chalk with Cheese.
Moreira has opposition over there , Pike ( fortunately for him ) is racing against alsorans, except for the apprentices, who do try.

Moriera is a class act. He has a very polished riding style that really compliments a horses galloping action. Let's hope he may visit Perth again soon

Likes to get his horses to switch legs in the run and that's what he believes his big advantage is

What do u mean shovhog? Switch onto their offside lead on straightening? Or switch leads earlier in running?

Take nothing away from Pike you can only beat the opposition put before you. He's the best thing happening in Perth Racing . He has captured the imagination of quite a few pundits over east and their opinions of Perth racing are not always complimentary. A lot of punters and scribes over there talk very highly of him and in my opinion rightly so. Enjoy the ride with him , he's not going to win on every favourite or every chance that he's on but he's still a heck of a jockey that will only get better. He will have his knockers no matter how many premierships he wins.

Can recall when Victorian trainer Robbie Laing flew Willy Pike over to ride at the big Waarnambool carnival about 8 years ago, it was a big call by Laing and a few people questioned the wisdom. I think Pike was more shocked! But even though in Melbourne Laing saw something in Pike early . After the carnival Laing had nothing but praise for him.

Rode 3 or 4 winners at the Bool carnival and just got  nutted in the Cup ,Robbie Laing has tried several times to get Pikey to go over as did Nathan Tinkler early days wonderful jock even his ride on Low Tide yesterday they were going that slow and it was pulling double so he took of around them just got beat but used his brain something the rst of the F Graders over here have no idea

A lazy treble yesterday including a 20/1 winner. Amazing sportsman , incredibly relaxed , but he gets that white line fever that many of the top sportsmen have. Gets a look in his eye that says I'm in the zone!

yes, but the scales are balanced because wayside was CRAP as was shining knight.
he is a glass half full, in that he may be very very good often, but he is also often very bad.

Yes I know what you are saying , I understand that but it's a bit like a test cricketer making 150 and saying that's no good he was dropped 3 times and played some bad shots getting there. Still made 150 , Pike still rode a treble. Don't know if that's a good example! But if Wayside and Shining Knight win he rides 5 and I don't think anybody can expect him or anybody to ride bags of 5 and 6 winners every week. Back Pike or any top jockey every race and you end up losing but it doesn't diminish their outstanding record overall.

He is a great rider here in the west, but he gets all the plumb rides too so of course his stats will be better than other jocks, if he were to get some goats to ride I doubt he would ride as many winners, he is on a good wicket with B.P, gets paid a retainer and gets the pick of the rides,

A 20/1 shot yesterday didn't look a plumb ride. You still have to do the job. I wouldn't take anything away from him because he gets good mounts. There is a reason he gets those rides. Likewise all top jockeys. But as you said he is a great rider.

In fairness roman knows was first up and I wouldn't class it as a goat
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,930 posts
Agree but it was 20/1 with him on it. I wonder what price Roman Knows starts at with another jockey ? And a bigger question does it still win ? I would guess 33/1 and probably doesn't. Interesting though.

True, but take ike as an example, has been given an opportunity to ride a decent horse in the last couple weeks and has won 2 listed races on it,
My point being some jocks get labeled as crap when they are not given a chance to ride anything other than goats

  • cant believe you can even think pike is anywhere near as good as moreira its like comparing a ferrari and datsun 200b pike if he didnt have the peters horses he wouldnt be no where as good as people think hes privilaged to be riding for a powerfull owner and even comparing him to harvey would be a joke aswell least harvey raced against the best over east willie wont do that as hes to comfortable

Even comparing him to Harvey you must be on the drink or the crack pipe  ,he has competed in HK Harvey didnt and won lots of races for J Size ,when his[WP] time is up he would have run laps around Harvey lot better rider more focused and driven the other bloke did it when he wanted to [great with media lol lol ] yes he has the best stable but as D Oliver once said YOU STILL HAVE TO WIN ON THEM  ,its  clear that Harveys years of winning everything stopped when W Pike came along  and looking at his numbers over 60% of winners are not BP horses so you have done your homework  NOT
    :)) :))

It's a race to 100 winners. I never said Pike was better than Moreira.
