120k is considered fairly cheap these days, not a bad price for Sebring who was sold as a stallion for $20m after winning a few million on the track. Star Thoroughbreds still living off his success...

Let's define cheap shall we? Less than 10k?

The upfront cost of say 10k does not reflect the cost of the horse. Keeping it in work each year @ 25k is the real cost so those examples of 10k horses that earn low 100k's would barely pocket a penny over the course.

And for every decent 10k horse there are 50 donkeys, so I would rather spend 100k up front knowing the upkeep costs for something that at least has a good family or is nicely put together...

Someone who buys 10 horses at 10k is going to be much poorer than the person buying 1 horse for 100k.

but, octy, people have paid millions for horses who are duds.
its just the luck of the draw..nothing else.
anyone in their right mind would never buy 10 for 10k

but to buy a 10k nag over decades u might get a good one.
BUT you'd have to be a punter and bet at the right time to show a cop...

Yeah agreed @octavius, then westspeed too if ya wanna get in on that. I do like the stories of Joe Janiak and other crew turning sub 5k horses into gold.
One topic I've meant to bring up is northerly. I haven't re-read the book for a while now but his full brother went for quite a lot at sale after the dam passed. Did it ever race? Correct me if any of my details are wrong.

I guess my point is why pay 10k for a horse that will cost the same as a million dollar horse in work, the upkeep costs are ridiculously weighted against something you pay so little for that will no doubt have nothing going for it in terms of pedigree and conformation...sure there is a takeover target story every now and then but there are also lotto winners and unicorns I am told...

A 10 k horse for some is like a million dollar horse for other's occy. If I could afford to spend a mil on a horse and not miss the cash I'd love it :-((

I'd rather put 100k into 10 horses at ten per share per horse than 100 k into one owning it blanc

You get ten chances have a lot if fun an get to meet a lot if like minded people

Get horses over all trips with different trains or locality

    Same costs for training etc

Have a shot at this @octavius or anyone else that is interested.

Pick 5 horses from the Feb sale - total spend cant exceed 300k.

Those that pick the stock that wins the highest amount by the end of June 2017 gets bragging rights <:-P

i thought the thread was for a cheap horse "YOU" had bought.

i was the under bidder on Felined a couple of years ago..think it sold for 2,200 and then went on to win several races including a Saturday race..........there are hundreds of stories in relation to "SOMEONE" else, but are there any out there of real cases that anyone on here has been involved in???

Rio that was me!! I bought felined she went super. your right was about 2k and won I think 1 provincial, 1 midweek and a sat. Biggest weekend of my life as I'm a part owner I'm victorious that had won a group one on the friday night. He was another cheap buy at $35k aussie.

Me and a group of mates have a little syndicate where we buy older horses we think have ability and try get the best out of them. Tam my partner who has been in the racing vet industry is exceptional at diagnosing and treating horses with problems. Have had a **** load of fun without spending much money. Some of the horses are,
    Felined as mentioned above.

Inferno who we got back going pretty good and won with with him in pinj ( got him on the punt! ) but he just didn't want to race anymore and currently lives a happy life getting spoilt in my paddock!! $3k

Ysamel currently racing with adam and going super. $5k

All too much who was a $400 weanling and looks to go good with Rob Moore.

All have had problems but with the right eye and someone with a bit of knowledge u can have a lot of fun without spending a heap of money. ( And some time and patience! )

hahaha...........well done, i had her tagged as worth 5k( a prep and a midweek win), but only had 2500 in the bank and was too miserable to go any higher and put it on credit...when i saw how keen you were (you bugger..haha) i just stopped bidding as i was only forcing the price up..

Great buy, am glad she added to a top weekend for you..

BY Helenus from memory...not breeding from her @loveperth ?

edit....just checked Moysater, like mares from both those stallions and was a big part of the interest

@RIO was one of my favourite horses. Its not always the horse that wins the most races or money that gets you. She gave everything every time she hit the track and I loved that about her. Dodge dyson did a super job with her she had bad fetlocks. We got that under control and she did a tendon!!

Yeah I put her in foal to tradefair, she had a little filly last year but unfortunately in a storm this year the poor little bugger ran into a tree and killed herself!! I am thinking of going back but haven't committed to anything yet. U love your racing any tips of sires to suit her??

in my opinion your on the money with Trade Fair......i've already proven my memory isn't too good - but i'm sure that's who i had in mind..

i just had a glance at her breeding and i think i'd be tempted to go Vital Equine. The Northern Dancer on her mare line should go good with his, and he is doing an okay job with limited numbers.

Real shame about your filly. Our only broadmare survived a very similar incident in the Easter storms this year...very lucky to survive, so feel your pain.

i knew Inferno too.....glad he has relaxed enough to be happy

Best one of all Miss Andretti cost nothing and returned just on 3million and was then sold as well

Vital equine been throwing bent legs to a few,
We had a cracking colt but needed a knee scrape done
If it weren't for the bent leg I would have sent her back to him

I think Vital Equine is doing a terrific job at Stud. He clearly doesn't produce a 2yo as a guarantee, but his three year old numbers and above are reasonable.

I bought a couple of horse shares through Star Throughbreds around the same time they syndicated Sebring.

A 130k purchase that won 2.5M in stakes and sold for 20M?

130k not cheap, but certainly not expensive on the East Coast.

    Does it get much better?
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts
i've known mares that throw bent legs to every stallion they go to, so pretty hard to pin that on the stallion, he's getting results and matches well to Felined...conformity is another subject altogether
  • magoo83magoo83    969 posts
Mare has had 5 foals all very correct, & when I asked at the stud if it were common for his progeny as I saw a couple there that had ordinary looking legs, and they tiptoed around the question,
