Richie was a bit confused after the last he was a unsure for sec if he called the right horse winning.

The first race at Pinjarra on SKY was a call not to be missed. Don't know what tech. fault they had but they had no call of the race available ( was it on TABradio???)
It was left to the poor studio guy to give it a go with a run down of all the colours in the race in front of him. There were more umm's err's and silence than there was a call but it did just go to show how good the guy's that call including D.MAC are.

Well done to the guy in the studio he did a great job under the circumstances !

I like D.Mac, he and Big Wes work great together and are always worth a listen when on together.

Ritchie makes a lot of mistakes at trots as well....Nod and a wink another inaccurate call...Darren must be taking the piss surely ... he is too professional to be making so many errors...

No he isn't taking the miock he is just avg at his job and always has been again everyone makes mistakes but far to often for this bloke its undefendable Richie is miles in front of him and should be made number 1 caller

i concur dungy.  bell gave me a dose of the sh*ts on monday when failing to call lightning run, could not believe it but i have held him in higher regard than d mac – whom I have not been a fan of for a very long time now.  as a listener (hardly ever watch unless live on track or down the rub a dub dub) i expect an accurate race call.  unfortunately this is often not the case from d mac.

I just watched all the replays from pinjarra on wednesday and he is not taking the mickey , he called path to victory , days like these , well i think he had one of those days .
It was probably the worst call of 9 races i have ever heard , he was all over the place , in the last he calls let's buy it 2nd , it finished 8th , called nediyms ruler classy dubai earlier in the day .
It's not an easy job but it was a horror day for him .

Why don't we .pester those higher up to split the major calls between DM and Richie.
    Personally I way prefer Richie.
But competition is v good and will lift everyone's game!

I don't think there is competition. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Daz Mac employ all the callers and his own company is contracted to supply the racecalling service therefore Darren would run the roster.

Like I said on the other thread, I thought Resetgold was on the fence, and I'm on an acute angle looking from the 550M point of the home turn, but it bloody well didn't look like 9th or 10th as per the call. I thought she had run in the first three but I couldn't see the outside horses in the run to the line.

Give me a break there was 13 horses within 3 1/2 lengths, Dash For Home was right there with 50 m to go

In fairness to DMac in that race - the first six were honestly 1L apart (if that) and coming from everywhere - it was a bunched finish and many would have had trouble calling that race finish!
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    8,016 posts
Oh well that's a reasonable excuse then. There were too many horses getting in the way to see what was happening in the race.

Hey PB you need to go to OPSM as Dash For Home was never there. :-B

I wouldn't criticise him for the call in that race either. That's Ascot. They can come from everywhere - especially with an even, average standard of horse.

That's why you shouldn't waste time and words going on about the winner or the stallion or the breeder or whatever else is lining the pockets.

There's plenty of blatant examples such as the Summer Scorcher where the eye is taken off the ball.

It was business as usual. The winner bolted in and Darren still couldn't isolate the second horse. Yes, a three horse photo but Shining Knight came the quickest, looked to have grabbed the other two but he wasn't looking even though the winner was way in front. Of that group, the second horse was mentioned behind the others.

I don't always agree with Ralph Horowitz but he understands promotion and racing's (shrinking) position in the market place. He talks a lot about "racing's customers" - the punters that fund the whole thing.

Racing's participants may not like that it is now 'wall to wall' racing; and that focusing on the placings rather than adding the colour and aiming comments at members of the industry, but that is life.

Someone driving in the car, listening to races, keeping money flowing into the pools, is entitled to know who has run in the money. At least know the caller has had a reasonably educated guess.

If they are treated with contempt by industry backslappers and vested interests he/she will take their money elsewhere. There are plenty of other betting options and you don't need to be Pythagoras to win.

They will still punt. Just not on racing.
