The trouble is that it would only take one incident for the anti racing lobby to get up and mobile again, publicity the industry doesn't need.

Better to be a little cautious I reckon

According to the official release, the decision was made in consultation with the trainers assoc. nothing to do with jockeys not wanting to ride or strappers not wanting to work.

The decision would have had everything to do with horse welfare.

    Release is on cris homepage

Trainers not wanting to go round for prize money I really doubt that in any conditions

Hello everyone - I thought I'd contribute to your discussion from a purely punting perspective. I'm much more comfortable betting on this programme tomorrow with a predicted temperature of 29 degrees. The 40+ predicted for both Saturday & Sunday is something I have no data on - some horses would be able to cope with it better than others but I doubt that even the trainers could guess which ones. The 2400m would have been a trot & canter (or more so than usual). One benefit for me as a punter, is that the markets have been up since Thursday so the prices are pretty solid now, I had a number of bets Thursday & Friday with TABs, bookies & the exchange. I'd suggest anyone who had an early bet check with their provider to confirm the status of their bet - I've had some listed as standing & others have been refunded & I've had to put them on again.

All my bets have been refunded twice now.
None standing as of this morning.
This will be the third time I have put them on.

It's predicted to be at least 41 here in Melbourne on Wednesday and could go higher, so Racing Victoria have changed the times for the meeting at Caulfield with the first race to start at Mid-day and the last at 4.00 p.m.

When I was in last in Perth in Feb 2012, I recall going to Ascot on a Wednesday and the temp hit at least 41-42, yet there was no attempt or even a thought to call off the races.

Be that as it may, all it takes is some clear thinking and the ability to switch and change and be adaptable.

Why couldn't they have raced at Ascot on Saturday with the first race at 11.00 a.m Perth time, and with 30 minute intervals they would have had the last at 2.30 p.m. Put all the bookies upstairs in the air-conditioned stand, and they would have had the added bonus of many more punters being at the track and betting on the Eastern States racing which would now have coincided with the Perth races. Oh, and make it a free entry day.

Wangaratta who race tomorrow, are commencing their 8 race card at 11.45 and finishing at 2.45. The predicted temperature there is 43 and will probably go higher.

I don't mean to be critical of my friends in the West, but it appears that some of the antiquated thinking that has permeated the State for years, infects all levels of business including the big business of racing. We used to suffer from a similar affliction, but at least we have come out of the dark ages and have learnt to adjust our thinking and be pro-active particular when it comes to ensuring that meetings will, as much as is humanely possibly, go ahead despite severe weather conditions.

Had Perth Racing, raced on Saturday, rather than today, I have no doubt that rather than lose money today which they probably will, they most likely would have shown a profit, or at the very worst, mitigated any losses.

They really need to look outside the square and not be so dogmatic in their decision making. I don't think that they are travelling so well, that they can afford to run race meetings at a loss.

Camporella in the last. Will take a sit against The Diva (sorry, I mean Shining Knight) as I'm concerned about the jockey on it. She is okay but if SK decides to pull, she may struggle to hold it and it could get swamped on the line...Also SK may be too short to get a decent return!! Altho I see it is at 3's at the moment????

Could you imagine the uproar if they did race on saturday and horse collapsed due to heat stress???

I for one, applaud the decision to postpone the meeting, altho I do agree that maybe they could of turned Sunday into a twilight meeting. It also makes the need for WA to have a night racing course set up somewhere for this exact reason.

I know i may be called a softie, hippie animal lover etc but it doesnt bother me. The welfare of the horse must come first, then the jockey and strappers.
