Hi all,

This question is for those who have been around a lot longer then me. I am doing a write about the Group 3 JRA Cup, however it was once called the Geoff Madden Handicap. The JRA Cup is a race run on Friday night, on AFL Grand Final even. In fact it's due to run next Friday night at Moonee Valley.

However there was a WA horse called The Hippogriff who won the 1990 Bunbury Cup.

he 1991 Geoff Madden Handicap (now JRA Cup) was won by a WA horse called THE HIPPOGRIFF, who was on the Cups trail in Melbourne that spring.

He
was by Balmerino and won heaps of those 2200m races in WA, including
the 1990 Bunbury Cup.
He came to Melbourne in the Spring of 1991 as a 7yo.   He was runner up
at Flemington over 2000m, then with Greg Childs aboard he won the Geoff
Madden Hcp over 2029m at the Valley at 10-1 beating RASHEEK (who would
later win the SAAB (Hotham Handicap) on Derby Day).  THE HIPPOGRIFF then failed in the
Herbert Power Hcp over 2400m before running a massive race to run 2nd
(beaten only a head) by AL MAHEB in the Moonee Valley Cup over 2600m.  I
think he may have been injured after the MV Cup & as a result WA
did not have a representative in the 1991 Melbourne Cup field.

That
was THE HIPPOGRIFF's only venture to the east coast.  He returned to
WA, had another 6 starts in Perth and retired after a 3rd place in the
Listed WA Premiers Cup over 2400m in Oct 1992.

Any more info on this horse?

Cheers,

PC.

Go and read what I said. I make NO MENTION about the horse getting a race named after him.

I said I am doing a write up which I will present on this forum next week in regards to the JRA Cup because it has been a good guide to horses going on better things during the spring carnival and beyond.

All will be revealed next week.

Good horse had  lot of problems but had stack of ability. Think there's another stablemate around about the same time which also showed a heap Balgold or something like that?

    Very good horse.

Andrew, it wasn't Balgold. She was a Fimiston mare that was with John McNair in Gosford - she was racing much later than 1991. Won quite a few races as well, mainly provincial as I recall, in the early 2000's.

No I just looked up  the breeding of the Hippogriff who is a half to the Australian derby winner Kankama the horse I was thinking of is Poppa's Gold the dam of hippogriff etc. I know though that garry martin had another good one around about the same time

just need to look at the offspring above . The Hippogriff had a full brother named Balgold 1981
  • AndrewCarterAndrewCarter    2,171 posts
I knew I wasn't going mad I thought it was called Balgold but its not listed in the australian studbook but it is in the nz studbook, maybe that's one that somehow fell through the cracks in the system. Its an older full brother and it was very smart as well.

30st 8 wins and 5 placings think it had problems as well if I remember correctly. Glad to see I'm not going crazy after all, it debuted in 1986 according to cris.
On the other hand the fimiston mare balgold didn't debut until 2001 and had 77 starts for 8 wins and 17 placings and wasn;t in the same street ability wise as the original balgold.

strange one it's definitely not listed in our studbook which was what threw me in the first place.

If foaled in NZ it would not appear in the ASB unless it eventually went to stud in Australia.

The old "two horses with the same name" trick - my apologies. I do wish they wouldn't allow repeat names.

It has aus listed in front of its name and that's rubbish anyway Shergar because I look up nz horses all the time in the australian studbook and they're always there. It's one that has somehow slipped through to the keeper.

Wrong, if it was Aus bred it would be after its name. NZ bred horses are seen in the ASB all the time but that means they are active in Australia.

Shergar's knowledge of breeding would play you on a break!!!!

...just another case of A Carter - highjacking and misdirecting a good thread - to the extent that posters shy away!

actually  I have spotted some beaut spelling mistakes for the said "journalist" !
