some will say, Paula Wagg or Irene Pateman but before that there was Linda Jones - but the answer IMO is Raylene Russo who rode in the NW in the early late 70s

What year did Paula Wagg ride at Ascot?
Would she be the first to ride in the city?

What about Lisa Harris, Fenella Roache, Marilyn Fagan, Shelley Geyer, Irene Konings ...
Did they ride before Paula Wagg?

I think Sheeley was a bloke - well I rode agianst him and changed alongside him and as the father of 7 - yep he was a bloke - Konings was nee Pateman and the rest were long time after Linda Jones - I reckon Linda Jones was first female to ride in open race in WA in metro area.

I would say that Linda Jones was the first to ride in WA but that Marilyn Fagan, Paula Wagg & Irene Pateman were the first to be licensed to ride against the blokes.

Irene Konings/Pateman, Marilyn Fagan, Paula Wagg, Myra? Ives, Christine White were just a few that rode in the lady only races on the country circuit in the late seventies. I stand corrected but I believe Paula Wagg and Irene (Jackie) Pateman were the first female licensed jockeys.

My understanding was that Marilyn Fagan was licensed at the same time as Paula & Irene.

Ok we now know who was first but who was the best or the best now my vote goes to the former Miss Alana Sansom.

yeah Alana had an approach which was unequalled ( by other female ) with her pre race exercises and form study.
But for an outstanding example what about kiwi's Lisa "Hey I am female too!" Cropp" - she really had something the rest of the girls didn't.

Best I saw was K Clapperton, and Lisa Cropp Alana never went on after her apprenticeship IMO. Marilyn Fagan probably the best I saw in WA
