Peoples success with a horse

Hi again everyone was just wondering what sort of success everyone has had with a horse as an owner, as for myself ive had very little only one to win, and at meeka ( a non tryer ) and my latest a 3yr old a 4th at northam in first prep but shows potential .

I went to the Inglis Sales at Newmarket in Sydney to buy a tried horse. I paid $10,500 for a 5yo gelding that had raced 32 times. I sold two thirds of him to friends immediately. That was in September and we spelled him immediately. At his 4th start for us in March the next year, we won a midweek at Canterbury. He was a moral beaten at Canterbury after that and we gave him a let up. He came back to win 2 at Hawkesbury and the next year won a Saturday at Doomben in Brisbane. We retired him after 80 starts. He had won over 50k for us in the mid 1990's.
I retired as an owner after that B-)

Good thread there rick, I've only had one that was ok, had fun,won in town,Pinjarra, Bunbury, Toodyay and even Derby,no superstar, but ,like I said had fun.

I've had a fair bit of success/luck owning city winners Fighting Fox, Queen ofthe Breeze, Friartruck, Impressive Johnson, impressing Matters, Riverside Drive, Universal Ruler, Kasabian, Impressive Jueney, Rebelson and the yet to win but very promising Oratism.
Had winners in the country also like Internationalist, Russian Rouge, Four Floors, Youwantsumadis.

Some good horses there but for me the stand out was Universal Ruler when he was right there was no one close to matching him between 1200-1400mts in this state at the time really looking forward to racing his babies starting this year hopefully very exciting :D

so true squirt when my zedrich gelding won at meeka i couldnt talk for an hour after the race ,he didnt collect much $$$ but the buzz for me was like he won a good race , this flying peg gelding i have a share in i have some hope for from what he has shown so far.

Scored my first midweek metro winner mid-last year and have only a couple of other provincial wins/winners to my name from many a starter! I still get a kick when my horse is nominated for a Saturday even though they end up down the track.

Apart from I Command, i also had shares in a Midweek winner..and over the past 12 months have got 2 wins out of Musical Dane..

I'm certain that if your ever on track when one of mine wins you will hear me..every win is and always has been a great buzz...

One of mine that wasn't making the grade down here we leased out to a small owner/trainer and he took it to Carnarvon...We were at a party and the race came on and we all had to stop to watch..he came second and i think i had sent 3 kids and 5 adults running from the room as a result of how loudly i was screaming at him to get over the line..

I do get a bit excited and like was written above..i get a massive buzz when one of mine gets nominated in the city..even if midweeks..if that ever dies off, or i come to expect that as a given...i think i would seriously consider giving horse ownership up.. have owned(or had shares) in more than a dozen, and only had 3 of them produce wins.

Have tried 4 yearlings..only one got to the track as a 2yr old...my goal is to have a winning 2yr old...and I've set a limit of 10 attempts...So 6 more chances to realise that goal..

i have only been involved in 3...one had 2 provincial wins...one at 34/1 :-\"
had a share in a magnificent looking lohnro gelding, bought from darley...turned out a fizz, bleeder. its form when we bought him was 5starts 1-2-1.
currently in an unraced elusive quality 3yo with my good mate diva....

You always start off with illusions of grandeur, first mapping out the Slipper/Karakatta then when it is unraced and turns three they tell you it might stay, or is a late maturer (i.e. most probably slow) and you start thinking its surely an oaks/derby horse and then when it is still unraced and turning four you start to temper your grandiose illusions and think if he/she can just get sound, or just mature, or if something just clicked then things will turn around...then it gets shipped to the country and finally ends up at the glue factory or horse heaven for those who don't want to know the truth about retired racehorses.

There is not better feeling than owning a winner and the truth is its doesnt matter if you own 5% or 100% the feeling is the same. You will lose money hand over fist in this game so take the smallest share you can and enjoy the ride, the disappointments are many but if you get a good one it can all be worth it.

For the record I am still waiting for that good one...

I had no money to throw at horse ownership so I had a few prerequisites for my purchase. First of all it had to be sound. My horse raced about 4 times after he was entered in the catalogue. He raced on the Tuesday before going through the sale on the Friday. He'd never been beaten a long way. He'd copped 32 starts as a September 5yo, mostly over>1600m. He had won a C5 by 4L yet was eligible for C2. He had multiple city placings. He could stay and we all know staying fields lack depth so easier to earn. He was in a stable we knew we could improve on.
Anyway, he was no world beater but we raced him for 2 years with zero issues. He had 48 starts in that time. It was a lot of fun and if I had known then what I know now, we'd have won a fortune on the punt. 2 of his wins were at >30-1.

i had one run in the wagga wagga town plate a few years ago, when i got there, the local paper had a story saying that owners had flown in from all over australia to see him run, i think he ran 15th. We did all back him one day at canberra ( i was at pinjarra races with marco pierluigi that day) and he ran nowhere, 2 weeks later storms home like ocky and gets up paying $56 the win $15 the place. never had a cent on him.....but i felt like john singleton all afternoon. chest puffed out and chin up, watched the replay 1000 times.

First one we bought was Werd......$44k turned into $572k and still going pretty well.
not too many more success stories like that.

Tottenham Hots won a couple including a Saturday.
Tree Top Walk won 3 for us many moons ago.
Successful Spin has now won seven, but all in the bush.
Lots of others won a race here and there, but nothing like the little champ Werd.

Started with 4k horse Nip It, bought from east and our first win was at York, he loved the joint!
It felt like Flemigton... and that night we bought 2 beef mongolian hot pots and thought we owned the joint.

I Command - was our best
Cardinal Reign - went ok
Test The Angels - honest bloke who goes best when its a real stayers test, not a sit and sprint
In Eden's Honour - the first horse i breed to race, looked like she would be a star but never grew past 14.2

Now just a bunch of young 2/3yo with no races yet.......and trying to breed my Karrakatta

Thankyou Scenic, I have been very lucky.
First horse Sun Serenata bought for $2k in Victoria, won $79,000. Got the ball rolling. Then Happy Gambler, Capital Cane, My Mate Jack, Grey Deception in the 90's.
Lord's Revenge, Professional Lady, Tip The Angel, Starsinmyvains, Special Witness, Field Commotion.
More recently The Pillager, Trade Tip, Travinator.
Lots of slow one's that are quickly sacked.

thats the one, first up for us that day. dasher on, Brett Pope the new trainer, instructions "we've had a bet, make sure you lead and let him roll"

He drew the stick just after they jumped, cleared out by 4 on the turn and won by 4.75lens.

That was "the" day that started it all for me and a bunch of us.

Started off a bit rough 1st horse was called Born Charming did'nt even race sold it to David Reed as a friend for his pet rig, then bought Let's Be Honest she had 8 starts but did a lot wrong so did not place, retired her to stud and that's when the fun began.

1. True Exile ( Lost Kingdom ) 6 wins
2. True Vixen ( Tackle The Pak ) put down due to stable accident
3. True Pixie ( Dauberval ) 1 win at Bunbury paid $68 never had a cent on. Sold her now mum of True Gold ( city winner )
4. The Truth Hurts ( Zedrich ) 5 wins
5. Richman's World ( Magic Of Money ) 5 wins
6. Royal Cobra ( Akhenaton ) 10 wins ( 6 city, 4 country )
7. Silver Omen ( Kendel Star ) 5 wins ( 3 city, 2 country )

Have started 2nd generation breeding from Richman's World,

8. Bohemian Paradise ( Akhenaton ) 2 wins sold him to Peter Strange won up at Broome 2012.
9. Breeze Road ( Akhenaton ) 1 win so far,
10. Un - named ( Kendel Star ) unraced.
11. 2012 colt by Therock , very nice fingers crossed.

Bought a mare at April sales called Libellous ,

12. 2012 filly by Therock also very nice and again fingers crossed.

It has been a real rollercoaster road but I have really enjoyed it all spent a lot of money, but have also got some back.

Too true, TSS. I've had numerous horses, but only 2 have paid their way. We paid $100k for one horse, and it didn't even make the track. She ran slower than my Nanna, and she's had her hips replaced.

Ahh Bohemian Paradise, got me and Diva out the crap that day in Broome. Threw away our form guides and backed it on looks. Got up at a big price and saved our backsides.

I have a 100% runners to winners ratio as an owner, and been very lucky.
I have had 4 horses that had exceptional ability, and won listed G2 & G1 races.
Funny thing is the cheaper horses were the best ones!
(And no, I would prefer not to name them)
