Purchasing Staying Horses

I noticed in another thread that some of you were talking about purchasing a stayer from the east to try and plunder the thin staying races here in Perth. I have tried to purchase a few from the east but getting owners to accept good offers is nigh on impossible. The money they expect is exorbitant, usually because they have purchased expensive yearlings ( by our standards) and then paid up for 4 or 5 years minimum as they wait for their champ to show something. I think a better idea is to consider European horses. Their economy is stuffed , their horses are genuinely bred to stay and dare I say it the right trainer here in Aus can improve their performance. I'm not talking at the OTI, Waller level of expenditure but down a few levels. Hardest thing would be to find an agent you could trust and a horse that could handle Perth tracks. I'd back Durrant/ Warwick to improve on some of the antiquated UK training methodology currently employed to train a turn of foot back into their stayers to suit Perth levels especially during winter.

Be very careful on the information you use to base any purchasing decisions. Sometimes when I look at what has been purchased I can't understand what made it so attractive in the first place.

Somewhere between $35,000 and $50,000 will land the horse here in Perth after clearing Customs, so that is a real consideration.

Also consider going to the Newmarket Ready to Run Sale. Very good source of middle distance horses in the UK.

The recent July Tattersalls sale was interesting. A few that I had picked with decent ratings ended up being withdrawn. Second teir horses still get 20 to 30,000 guineas so once landed in Perth, seeing as they go via Melbourne, you are still looking at 60k Aud minimum.
You could purchase something half decent here for that from the east IMO.
The October Tattersalls sale is the main HIT sale in Europe but that's a big money sale.
Probably better to search in OZ.

Fair point on the cost to land here in Perth. I hadn't been serious to investigate that far yet. The point remains though for what you can spend at a yearling sale on a completely untried animal a late 3 year old with a staying pedigree that has won a race or 2 from a few starts can be bought in Europe apparently for reasonable money especially with a more favourable exchange rate Very reasonable when you compare what owners ask for in the east when I inquired. I only asked after mid week performers and have never got near one for 100 k. Madness I know, by both purchaserand potential seller but wanted to test the market.

I know of two currently mid week stayers here in Perth that could be purchased for 12to 15k. Change of stable maybe all they need .

Getting away from stayers for a bit. I was recently reading an American thoroughbred site which did an analysis on some sires. They stated that More Than Ready was a disappointing sire in the USA and not worthy of his fee.
A sensation here in OZ yet viewed differently overseas.

The catch with stayers here is......
You buy young (affordable) ones, and running on our hard tracks they break down before they get up the grades, or
You buy tried / proven ones from East and they want a fortune for them, or
You buy cheap older ones from east and hope to hit the one diamond in the rough.

Not that many staying races here to throw that sort of money away trying imo

Good milers are a dime a dozen over there, but stand out here
And lots of races for them

Also try and breed a stayer yourself and wait 5 years to find out it cant run out of sight on a dark night.
