Well its rearing its ugly head again with a couple of deaths over the weekend at the Oakbank carnival.
Obviously we all love horse racing, otherwise we wouldn't be here. I am interested to know what peoples take is on the jumps?
Personally, I don't agree with it and don't really like watching it. Before I get shouted down at, I don't agree for a couple of reasons.
I feel that in Australia, all of the jumps racing is made up of horses who have finished on the flat, and its just another way of squeezing some more out of them. This is a view that may be ignorant as I don't really have much of a clue re: the jumps.
Also, is it right in saying that in Australia we don't do the jumps properly? I've heard on various occasion that the problem here is the jumps are lower than that internationally. This then allows "any old hack" to go over them, therefore creating a pool of horses that really shouldn't be doing this?
Are there specific sires for jumps horses? Do they breed horses or train horses internationally only for a jumps career? Should there be regulations here that ensure that only horses specifically prepared for a jumps career can race over the jumps, and not something that could previously stay and has a million starts over the flat and is now rising 11 (ie Art Success).
I guess this all comes down to information and facts, which i'll be very happy to hear about, and this information should be delivered to the greater public, for their own sake.

RSCPA were there and said everything was done in accordance with their regulations/government standards.
But in saying that, jumps racing will always suffer from this in this PC era.
Therefore, some owners and trainers are squeezing more out of their horses than they should. We don't do jumps racing properly and this is not helped by tracks that have better drainage than 20 or 30 years ago. Horse are bred overseas specifically for jumps racing.
Recent changes do not go far enough to making jumps racing safer.
I would eliminate barrier stalls for starters so that horses start off at a canter, not a full blown gallop. I would only have jumps racing from April through to August. Jumps racing should only be held on slow and heavy tracks - we all know that a dead 4 track is really a good track because it regularly gets upgraded to good. The Oakbank jumps racing carnival should be moved to the Queens Birthday weekend. Horses running in maiden hurdle races should be handicapped on their flat form so that a horse like Art Success which won a Brisbane Cup would get a weight that it can't go over jumps. I told my Mrs on Sunday it would break down because it was jumping awfully and the trainer was asked by the stewards to consider the horses career. He was a lovely horse and I should know because I have patted him and he would have made a lovely pony club horse for a 15 year old.
The authorities must be reminder that if jumps racing is to succeed it is only for slow horses and it is a winter sport so the tracks must be slow or heavy for that soft landing.
