Ace V the stewards were aware he was assisting his father and doing the majority of the training they were unable to grant him an official licence at that stage due to his young age, so stop being a smart arse.
It is part of my job to remember these things and because it was such a remarkable feat its etched indelibly in my memory, while most kids his age were out partying he was working in his fathers stables and doing a tiling apprenticeship as well as driving to and from vrtually evry country harness racing meeting there was so you cannot question his work ethic and dedication from a very young age.

reed's thoroughbred achievements are outstanding. imagine how much more he could have won if he didn't have 6 months off.

Mark Reed had Gondorff going really good last year around this time and then gets a positive with that horse.
    Says it all for me!

you're starting to stretch the definition of "young" now.
Im reliably told Justin is 41!

the article was meant to cover trainers in their 20's but it did slip into early 30s!

It's been a year sice the article that inspired this thread was posted. I'd be interested what the posters thoughts are about how these young guns have progressed and if there are any fresh nominations. Justine erkelens perhaps without knowing her age.

To be considered a Young Gun trainer, IMO they gotta be under 30 yo.

What about less than 5 years licensed ? Or less than 5 years in Perth ?

So if Bart moved to Perth he'd be a young gun????

I like under 30 or less than 5 years as a licensed trainer.

And i don't know if Justine falls into either of those categories...but she is certainly do well..

Justine is really good, excellent trainer. Not sure of her age but.
Young trainer should be under 30 years though IMO.

plenty of promising young trainers in W.A at the moment, IMO the future looks good in the training ranks. Wish i could could say the same about the young Jockeys coming through....

The system is letting down the young riders.......needs a complete overhaul and clean out..... in my opinion.

    cheers

If these kids don't make it now they never will with the current weight system. Even the trainers are preferring to use a jockey on horses carrying 60kg than claiming, seems a real concern because they obviously don't have enough faith in their ability at this stage.

Spot on Voodoo! No professionalism at all from the top down, all they are worried about is Mechanical Horse..How about sitting down and assessing every ride they have on a monday, then going through and watching all the city races for the weekend and watching for good rides/bad rides.

There is no reason WA should not have good kids, but you watch them at the trials and they are a milion miles away from being competitive with the eastern states kids!

So many of us on here, focus on so many things that are all the result of horses racing.

If we don't have good jocks, trainers, breeders and good owners we don't have an industry..And at the moment the crop of young jocks looks better than the other groups?!?!?!?!? If all of these groups cant make a quid out of the industry, then they wont hang around when things get tough...and i reckon now is about as tough as it gets.

So, IMO the industry isn't in very good shape in WA...and when most areas are struggling there can only be one reason..the funding doesn't cover cost of the industry..RWWA...needs an overhaul...What a shock statement that is!!!

We need better training in all areas...Not only trainers and Jockeys, but anyone coming into the industry. At least the jocks get a structured training program, but i don't think you have to do too much structured training to be an owner, breeder or trainer.

So i think the young jocks are doing better for the industry than the young trainers...that is as a GROUP....Some of the young trainers really need to be in a structured program with a senior mentor...Yes it is giving up secrets to the opposition..if you want to look at it in that light...but it is also ensuring that the best practices that are currently working are being passed onto the next generation..If we want the industry to survive we need to pass on best practices....

There you go..my bored Easter rant over..back to the dishes and another chocy egg or two!!!
