Seek The Challenge
West Australian Racing
i must be bored tonight.
http://www.rwwa.com.au/home/seek-the-challenge.html
so i thought i might apply for the chief handicapper's position.
the current racing manager has far too much on his plate and it's affecting his handicapping, so he needs to take a step back.
Covering letter
The covering letter should outline what position you wish to apply for,.....chief handicapper
where you saw the advertisement......i didn't, just know you need a new one
and a brief outline of the skills and abilities you possess that would make you the best person for this role......i would remove the country city madness.
i would not lower the class of 3yo's relative to older horses and then change it back after other official handicappers criticised me, because i would have the conviction of my own belief.
i don't take myself seriously.
i like taking the piss!
Resume
Your resume should contain the following:
Contact details......care of PTT
Summary of work history......idle for about 35 years
Education & relevant qualifications.....trade certificate as an offset printer extraordinaire but quit about 35 years ago to become idle
Nomination of three work referees......1 = aw but the bugger has died before i could ask him for the reference
..................................2 = mrs carey as she think's it's time he stopped being idle, and she's sick of him always being home.
..................................3 = self, as i reckon i could do it better than the present incumbent, and it's unhealthy to be idle for so long!

depends on what you mean by know.
i didn't actually 'know' him at all.
did we talk?....yes, quite often over a lot of years. very often for a couple of years.
did i know him socially?...no, i tend to avoid people. he was supposedly a recluse, but he didn't know the meaning of the word! i do.
racing matters only?...yes
did i approach him?....no
did he approach me?....yes
did i work for him?....no
did i do 'work' for him?....yes
would i have worked for him?.....no
would i trust him?......NO
Particularly did he approach you....
he wanted to know how; because i can do in minutes, what takes other groups months to figure, and the results are worse than i can do in those few minutes.
you don't need to be einstein to figure what this means every time you want to start in a new country.
even 'the swooper' who i helped a bit(me being a generous soul and all!!), can make pars(one part of it only)for wa in a minute or so, for as many tracks as he chooses at the same time(with code i wrote for him).
in the case of the swooper i did it for nix, simply because he seemed to be a good bloke, and was vouched for by another guy from wa that i liked.
but he didn't get the main stuff, just stuff to help him freely keep data for wa, and the ability to make pars/variants in a hurry.
maybe more, i can't remember actually!
but he didn't get any code, i don't think.
just the executables
you're not called "paul l" by any chance are you?
he was aw's 2ic, and he thinks he knows how i do it, but i have since found out he is way off track.
or you could even send me your ascot pars and i could tell you how far wrong they are
i would be very suprised if your code was anything like mine.
can you make class figures and pars and variants with NO subjective input?
can you figure the average age improvement cycles for 2 & 3yo's with NO subjective input?
can you tell the average difference between, for example, melbourne and perth or singapore and hk, or woop woop and timbuktu?
and much much more.
Judging from your questions i would suggest we do them very differently, and by the sounds of things you have them by the balls :P
I only create figures for Perth, and they arent anything like Beyer and co do, they are created from meters per second to get around the rediculous distances in play in WA like 1016, or 1190 etc... And im not using them at the moment anyway because i've been working on something else entirely, nothing to do with creating my own probability estimates (although i do have a bet here and there for the "love of the game").
why do you think changing to metres per second, will fix the problem of odd distances? it won't. VERY IMPORTANT
if one distance was 1000 and another 2400, would you expect the metres per second to be the same?
the same logic applies to say 1200 & 1220.
the proportion of wrong distances will also make it suspect.
the higher the proportion of odd distances the more suspect your numbers will be.
you need to find another way.
and you can thank me and john zucal for those odd distances, because i nagged and nagged him to fix what was more often than not, wrong distances in wa.
and to his credit he did.
what is better odd distance but reported correctly, or odd distance called the normal distance and thus reported wrongly?
the fight is not between the punters and the betting agency, it's just between the punters, with the betting agency taking a cut for providing the service.
OK, lets assume yours are more accurate than mine, if i was to say to you, i believe the 1600 par at Ascot is .98644% p/m slower than the 1400, how accurate / innacurate would you say that is?
0.988902237(or .989 for della!) currently, but it's fluid.
plus i don't do those sorts of conversion because imo it just adds needless steps to the process.
the times are actually irrelevant, it's only the relationships between them that matters, but i suspect you may realise that already.
Always interesting to hear how other do it... (not that you've let on a whole lot :D )
the process itself is the stimulating thing, the dollars are your measure of success, but they are not necessarily the reason you do it.
i could have stopped a long time ago, as i probably spend less money than the average wage earner, so don't need much at all.
and as i am an unsociable prick, then that's even less money i need!
happiness is walking in the wilderness admiring the flora and fauna, and that's free.
well the truth is i have had 3 goes at it, and each one better than the previous.
plenty of problems and many mistakes being made.
but it's probably really only at about break even level, and i don't really care if it works out or not, as i don't need it....it's simply a challenge i set myself.
the obvious problem is i am trying to make one model only that works with everything, when in actual fact you need trillions of different models.
but rather than ask the modellers for help, i would rather nut it out myself all on my ownsome (it's how i have always worked).
possibly, i will just tire of it and forget it, as i do many things which don't work out as i would hope, despite my best efforts.
put simply i know where my expertise is, and don't pretend i am good at things that i basically know nothing about.
some people like scrabble or cryptic crosswords....same thing.....mind food.
