Very nice Bull, looks like lots of speed
Mungrup Stud freshman sire Due Sasso began a memorable afternoon for the Great Southern nursery when Kemilee won the opening event on Perth Cup day.
Kemilee (2f Due Sasso - Lacher by Cheraw) benefited from a lovely ride by Lucas Camilleri for an auspicious victory in the Westspeed 2YO Plate at Ascot. The filly tracked leaders Theatron (Theatre) and Rose Of Pegasus (Flying Pegasus) before sprinting to a winning lead in the straight.
Kemilee was bred by Perth Racing vice-chairman Lex Piper and his wife Shirley. She sold for $36,000 to Commercial Bloodstock at the 2010 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale but still races in the Pipers? orange and red colours. The Pipers are major shareholders in Due Sasso along with Mungrup Stud?s Gray Williamson.
Due Sasso was a Group 3 winner of the 2006 Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield for owner-breeder Des Pope and trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith but injury curtailed his career after just eight starts
The son of Scenic was set to stand his first season at Touchstone Farm in 2007 but was transferred to Mungrup at short notice to cover for Danehill Express who had suffered a severe leg injury.
Kemilee is a half-sister to six other winners by Mungrup sires Metal Storm (3), Stormy?s Son (2) and McFlirt. The best of them has been Smokey Ireland who won 13 races in Perth and South Australia.
She has a Sunspeed pedigree going back several generations through her dam Lacher (Cheraw), second-dam Secessional (Phylkin) and third-dam Kemily (Jungle Boy).
Lacher has a filly (Lot 19) from the first crop of Danehill Express at the 2011 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Kemilee was one of 77 foals from Due Sasso?s first crop and only five of them have raced so far. He has 27 second-crop yearlings for sale at the Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Trainer Todd Harvey said Kemilee will be set for the $250,000 Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic at Ascot on February 12.
Agreed not for me.
By the way Im not saying they are going to be superstars. But I m very happy. Both have white blazes look like Scenic Blast or apache Cat.
Thy are not big very nuggety.
You can see them on Damien Wyers photographic site as yearlings.
What do yours look like???. At least you are waiting for them to mature most people are impatient.
the latter is a half to Tempestuous Strike and Mavrick. Also related to Uncle George, who won well two weeks ago.
The gelding is big, tall and rangy a very good type to look at from a family that consistently produces city winners. It's not their type I object to it's their nasty, unfriendly, suspicious, piggy little minds. The geldings two older siblings, one by Dante's Fury, the other by Kendel Star are both multiple city winners and have good professional minds, which is not the norm for their respective sires. The mare's foal at foot b y Vital Equine is an absolute delight to handle, so the temperament issues come down from Due Sasso. Friends of mine were at Ascot the day Shes Roys Gift went bonkers and got sacked from JT's stable, said they had never seen a performance like it.
I didn't choose to breed to Due Sasso he was offered to us at 1/2 price after the stallion we had originally booked was pulled from service.
Based on this year's number of mares that went to him, and the less than favourable opinion that most seem to express, I would say his time to shine is on the racetrack this year or it is all but over.
Two of his yearlings made the Premier Sale of 130 lots, and 22 made the Select portion of the sale, so his chance of having a reasonable selling average is still there.
But I think he will go the way of other sons of Scenic, and produce a reasonable horse on an occasional basis. For the most part getting Wednesday and easing class winners.
Mungrup might have a runner for the 2YO races yet, based on the performance this morning of Magic Halo, a Danehill Express filly. She won in a good time of 23.75 secs over 400M at Lark Hill, which is close to the standard required for Saturday class.
