Here are Hoops tips for this weekend.
Gary Wright will be doing the preview for Saturday. While he has been going pretty well at Northam, he gets a chance to step up this week!
RACE 1 ? WESTSPEED 2YO HANDICAP
No. 8 MISS SOLIS. The first two-year-old event of the year - and as always, a bit of guess work is required. I?m going for the Oratorio filly, Miss Solis. She hails from a stable renowned for getting their juveniles up and going early and based on her 400m trial, she looks like a speedy filly who will go forward and give a big sight. El Rijes trialled really well and I think she?ll run a big race. Wheatbelt Swallow, Roc?N?Doc and Park Lane also trialled nicely. As always, watch the betting in these events.
Numbers 8, 2, 6, 4
RACE 2 ? BURSWOOD OPENING DAY @ ASCOT NEXT SATURDAY HANDICAP
No. 5 GREAT?N?GREY. This is tough little race with five of the eight runners coming in with genuine claims. I?m going for Great?N?Grey who has been given a four week freshen up since his last win. He has been flying for SJ Miller and from his draw, he should get a sweet run just behind the speed. Ringmeister was a dominant winner first up and was heavily backed in the Hannans Handicap but he never got warm. His saddle also shifted so he had genuine excuses. Clearly he is a much better horse when he finds the front and can dictate. Pintada Prince put in a big effort first up when he parked wide for the duration but kept fighting on. Gumnut Guru and Western Jewel also have serious claims.
Numbers 5, 4, 8, 2
RACE 3 ? YELLOWGLEN MELBOURNE CUP DAY @ ASCOT 1/11 HANDICAP
No. 6 RUBITAWNY. There is no reason why this very promising mare won?t be making it four wins straight. She made her rivals looks second rate at her last start, coming from the tail and blowing them away under a throttle hold. She does go up 2.5kg but she is a big strong mare and I don?t see that being a problem. Westriver Kevydonn was taken to Northam at his recent outing and he simply ran his rivals ragged, leading from go to whoa and running quick sectionals. I think he?ll take up the running again and will give plenty of cheek. Fortescue Flyer will find it hard to turn the tables on Rubitawny but he is a consistent galloper and should finish in the top four.
Numbers 6, 4, 1, 2
RACE 4 ? racingjobs.com.au HANDICAP
No. 6 SOUND BARRIER. This is one of the trickier races of the day. I?m going for Sound Barrier but not with a great deal of confidence as his win strike rate is not flash. However, he is in good form and has drawn a barrier which should see him get all the favours in running. His last two efforts over the staying trips have been good and he?ll do me on an each way basis. Mr Moet jumps up sharply in distance and in class but he looks a promising staying type and hails from a camp renowned for training stayers. William Pike takes the mount and he?ll be hard to beat. Malaika is flying at the moment, she always needs luck in her races as she is a get back run on horse but you can expect to see her steaming late. Senhor Da Gama is a real one paced gelding so the step up in trip suits.
Numbers 6, 5, 3, 4
RACE 5 ? WESTSPEED 3YO HANDICAP
No. 7 RON?S CALL. This is a good quality three-year-old event with some nice types engaged. I?m really keen on the chances of Ron?s Call. His first up win at Northam was as emphatic as you will see. He crossed from his outside gate to the fence, ran time and was pulling clear late under hands and heels riding. The horse he beat, Dark Miss won at midweek level on Wednesday. He?s drawn a perfect gate and I think he will camp just behind the speed and be too good. There was strong money for Red Hot Sax first up and she didn?t let his supporters down with a very good win. From barrier 2 she can either lead or box seat. Mendicity is a promising filly, she?s still learning and can do some things wrong but she also has winning claims.
Numbers 7, 2, 4, 3
RACE 6 ? playeronline.com.au HANDICAP
No. 6 PHILBY. I?m happy to stick with Philby to make it back to back wins. His first two runs back from a spell were good and he completely dominated his rivals last start when he sat close to the speed in a small field and came clear for an easy win. From barrier 3 he should get a perfect trip in transit and he looks the one to beat. Rebel Fury has been OK in his two runs back, he gets some nice weight relief and I think he should be ready to run a big race. Moneghetti is always a chance in these types of events but he is a horse who gets back and always needs some luck.
Numbers 6, 10, 11, 4
RACE 7 ? LOOK FOR THE TICKS GUARANTEED POOLS HANDICAP
No. 3 WERD. They should really run along in this with some speedy types engaged. It?s hard to tip against the speed ball, Werd, in these open 1000m sprints. He has been given a six week freshen up since his last win, when he led all the way and obliterated his rivals in quick time. He?ll undoubtedly go forward and either lead or sit outside Revolition, both scenarios suit and I think he will be too good for these. I think the blowout chance in this race is Morant. He was a different horse last preparation, once Ross & Clint Price took over his training. He started three times for the training combination and posted three big wins. Clearly he will be looking for further but he does posses the ability to peel off mean sectionals. For Your Eyes Only is all class at her top, if she was to find her best she would blow this field away.
Numbers 3, 6, 2, 9
RACE 8 ? PERTH SAINTS FC HANDICAP
No. 2 RAFFERTY. I think there are limited winning chances in the last and if Rafferty can be kept out of trouble in running, I think he can smoke this field. He was simply brilliant at his most recent outing, settling near enough to last and getting momentarily blocked but letting go with a paralysing turn of acceleration over the final furlong to win comfortably. Drawing the outside gate suits as he?ll get back and provided he can get to the outside in the straight, I think he?ll take an awful amount of holding out. The main danger appears to be Ginsberg. He ran well first up, finishing second behind a very talented galloper in Luckygray. He?ll get the sweet run from his gate and looks the one Rafferty will need to rundown.
