OMG
A very poor pace judgement by 50 year old jockey - Coetzee .

I think he forgot this is a big field and not a 9 horse race. -
and he held on abit too long going into the straight.

It doesnt make any sense to have a slow reflex 50 year old jockey compete against
riders half his age in a big field race even if the owner wants to
make it an all South African affair - with due respect to Coetzee.

Overall a good intelligent tactical race by Japanese riders to cut off Coetzee as they
enter the top of the straight. It literally left no space for Rocket Man
to produce his famous burst home. When he did the race was all over.

Moreira should be the rider like we all recommended.

The horse has never shown a great turn of foot imo. He's more of a grinder with a high cruising speed like hay list - although hay list has the great ability to explode off the corner, i don't think he can give real G1 horses more than a length or 2 because he just cant make up that much ground. He's obviously a serious horse if he can get to the front and control the race. But that didn't happen here.

Rocket man doesnt like to be crowded in front, he likes to race
with an open space up front.

The few seconds of hesitation by Cortzee caused him at least
a place or even a win. Becaue that allowed a smart Japanese jockey cutting in and blocking out RM .

RM wasnt a spent force at all, if he had a clear run from the top
?f the straight. Once his run was interrupted he lost that rythmn.
Still he was running on if you watch the video carefully., :D

So, even trainer Shaw is unhappy with Coetzee for poor judgement
    and jockeyship.

(see report in STC ) .

A disappointed Shaw said Rocket Man tried his heart out but his
chances had been snuffed out at the 600m when A Shin Virgo caught
    them in a pocket.

He just didn?t have any luck in running, said the South African
handler. When the filly came up behind him at the 600m and caught him
in a pocket, thats when he lost the race.

Felix should have let him roll before then because that is his racing
pattern he does not like to be restrained. When he tried to angle him
out at the top of the straight, he got squeezed in
    .

When you lose your momentum in a Group race like this and the straight
is so short, it was always going to be difficult for him from then on.

He still made up ground as Lucky Nine was one length in front of him and
he beat him on the line. He ran out of his skin but he just did not have
    the luck we had anticipated.?

I call it a grossly incompetent ride for someone who is
supposed to be SA's best jockey

I think Coetzee at this age is good only to ride in races with less
    than 10 horses.

I didnt lose money on that race, I didnt bet Rocket Man at that insane
dividend. I only play a forcast on longshots 2 & 3, No. 2 came in
second, 3rd finished at the back . I got place money on 2, and
recovered my tiny investment overall

Rocket Man needs everything to go his way.

Black Caviar would blow him away and it wouldn't matter how the race was run!

Could be an interesting race against Hay List or even Barakey :D

From my perspective it seemed he had every chance, was never going to beat that winner, gave him wind burn! The hard luck stories are only there as an excuse, a lesser horse wouldn't have attracted any attention?

    Well said H
  • Black Caviar, Wanted, Scenic Blast, Weekend Hussler, Miss Andretti, Takeover Tarket, Alinghi and Exceed and Excel have won the last 8 Newmarkets.

Throw in Hay List, Crystal Lily and Apache Cat to that list of all the horses that Rocket Man would struggle to beat up the Flemington straight 6.

    Good horse but grossly overrated.
