how many TAB's do you have there - this is more my point. that people dont need to go to the track anymore... Gee i'd be interested to know how many licensed TABS there are in WA.

OK let's copy Dubai, but first we have to find a few sheiks or other multi billionaires who want to pour heaps of money into racing.

there is one reason the Hkong tracks are packed and it is the thing that stopped crowds coming to australian tracks - hk have no other form of 'legal' gambling. so the public go to the track to punt. i am a firm believer that tab's, net gambling, and so on have not only been the best things for oz racing but it has crippled the public attendances to the tracks - y go to the races to have a punt, spend $10 a drink, 110 bucks for s steak burger three quarters of your years salary for a book and go have a wizzz in a stinky dunny preying u dont run into penguin in the bookis ring, when you can sit on your bum in front of your huge tv, great surround system drinking beer for $2bucks each (if u buy carton) with your net in front of u getting best prices oz wide and order a pizza or get an angus burger for next to nothing - beets me

    You are spot on MFN.
    :abeer:
    Saved me typing it

And they charge to get into this place
They would prob spend more on the wages for the gate staff,
and ticket sellers, than they get for charging for entry.
    Why bother :?

    Unfortunately this is completely true.
Thats why the biggest current drawcard for on-course patronage in today's environment continues to be good horses!
Racing in general needs to lift its line of vision and realise the greater marketplace its competing in - the 'entertainment' arena is 10 times bigger than what it was 10-15 years ago.
Put on good facilities, value for money, accessibility, and unrivaled entertainment (good horses in this case) and thats a fair starting point.
I don't feel this is a current option on WA Metro tracks.

One thing that applies for my situation- Provide a creche facility and I would be there a lot more often. For people with a young family, the races is a long day that is just too hard to get to and enjoy if the kiddies have nothing to do except go on a set of swings for 20 minutes out of 300.

Many people I know are in the same boat.

Insurance is the big problem, Bobby. People sue...with the help of those ambulance chasing lawers.....at the drop of a hat.

It's all very well to say "good horses"....you can't pluck a very good horse out of thin air. It does work though..a mate was at the MV night meeting to see the mare..said the atmosphere and promotion was incredible...special commemorative race books, hand flags of her racing colours.
Look at the crowd that turned out at Randwick to see her..on a lousy day weather-wise!!
They know how to promote over there....we don't know how to, we have no expertise in that field. We might THINK we have, but we haven't.

Take "Derby Day" a few weeks ago. Our best staying 3yo going around in one of our very few Group 1s...sadly it was just like an extremely mediocre crowd for an ordinary saturday meeting. Little or no promotion and our Chairman & hangers-on were swanning around Randwick..(so I believe) on a GROUP 1 day at THEIR club. Very poor EVH, very poor.

Remember when Derby Day was on Boxing Day?? What a day that was, eh? Some misinformed idiot tried to fix something that was not broken..but purring like a roller. Now we don't even have a metropolitan meeting on the 26th....
You wonder why we are languishing.....have a look around you... :?
  • as soon as our horses get good they go over east
  • saintlysaintly    70 posts
As I live in the east we also have the same issues, I agree that increased 'access' to be able to bet by phone and net has reduced the need to actually attend. But as it was said their needs to be an 'advantage' to attend the track one thing I have thought is that if you are on course you get 10% extra dividend win and place and do what honk kong do.

Have the 'super trio' for oncourse only.

That is you have to pick 3 trifectas in 3 races and yes it does jackpot whi h would encourage people to attend the following week.

Even with a 'flexi' option a decent dividend can be obtained for a reasonable outlay.
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,471 posts
    On course jackpots...excellent thinking, saintly....
All it needs is someone to run with it.
Remember they had it at the trots decades ago..attracted massive crowds..
You would only need about 2 a year...one after new year and one in mid winter. If they were on going they would lose appeal...
  • saintlysaintly    70 posts
Yes Falcon 2 or 3 year and maybe promote them a couple of weeks after the 'jackpot' lotto draws.
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
In reality...............what would bring people back to the track :
    - A return to the 5 day working week
    - Removal of the ability to punt on other sports
    - Get rid of pay TV and return to 3/4 TV channels (or 1/2 if you grew up where I did)
    - revert AFL back to VFL (and hence eliminate WCE, FFC etc)

    Shall I continue ?
  • AquanitaAquanita    566 posts
Shame on you Tivers for bringing reality into the argument.

Enormous riches await the person with the magic bullet at any racetrack around the world.

On course jackpots that is one of the best ideas why not?
  • GLAMOURGLAMOUR    870 posts
Ive read all the ideas to get people back to the track, yes everyone has ideas, but the admission price should be cut back to $10.00 on lesser days, the drinks is a rip off, around $8.00 a stubbie, dont tell they arnt making a small fortune on them,as some have been mentioning about a owners/trainers stand which would be great, instead of them having to stand out in those 35-36 degree days, something should be made available for them close to the stables, and as someone mentioned,Good horses bring people to the races,as soon as we get one showing ability, the Handicapper slaps 10-12 rating points on them, see you later.

After a few glasses of that...pat 'em on the head and their pants fall off....

is that true??? I'm off to buy a couple of boxes. :D
But seriously.... tits and ass. Where the girls go the boys will follow... and they are usually the ones with the cash. Why do the night clubs let the girls in with virtually no guidelines. And the biggest meeting outside of Cups day at just about every race club is "ladies day".

If internet gambling was banned you would see more people at the track( not that i want that to happen lol, i am just saying). I go to the track nearly every Saturday and the reason is because i enjoy the racing. Entertainers are great but if they take the focus away too much from the racing it won't have a real impact imo.

Attitude towards racing has changed and you don't see many younger people at the races except the big days. In fact in Melbourne some people dont even know there is a big race meeting unless its the spring carnival . I would hate to see what the races are like in 10 or 20 years time if they don't try to get younger people more involved.

Not sure if there is any real answer though but i think they need to ensure that when someone goes to the races they enjoy it and want to come back.
