QUEENSLAND RACE UNDER SUSPICION
Racing Queensland Limited stewards yesterday announced that
an inquiry into the riding tactics employed by riders in race seven
at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and the betting activities associated
with that race will be re-convened at 1pm on Thursday, February
24. This timing will allow stewards to gather further information in
respect of betting activities.
The rider and trainer of every horse in the race have been required
to appear, along with a number of bookmakers and at least one
punter.
The race was won by Ibalance who was backed from $8 to start
$4.20 before leading throughout to win the Mittys Handicap
over 1200m after the track was downgraded to slow earlier in
the day.
Steward Daniel Aurich said stewards raised concerns after
questioning jockey Joe Bowditch over his riding tactics on the
Gillian Heinrich-trained Sky Traveller who was ridden midfield
before finishing third, less than two lengths from Ibalance. ?We
have started a preliminary inquiry and questioned Joe Bowditch
over his tactics on Sky Traveller who normally leads in his races
but sat off the pace in fourth and fifth place on Wednesday.? RQL

ending an inquiry into a race at Eagle Farm
last Wednesday. Stewards summoned a
bookmaker and at least one punter, as well
as all jockeys and trainers engaged in the
Mittys Handicap (1200m), to an inquiry in
Brisbane on Thursday before concluding
no party breached the rules.

SYDNEY PUNTER'S BETS REVEALED
Professional Sydney punter Steve Fletcher collected a five-figure windfall following Essington?s success at Eagle Farm last month, an inquiry into the running and handling of Bold Glance has heard.
Racing Queensland stewards reopened their inquiry on Friday after ordering Bold Glance?s rider Bobby El-Issa to produce his recent mobile phone records after the Toowoomba sprinter was runner-up to Essington in the Listed Falvelon Quality.
Stewards raised their concerns with El-Issa?s riding action and vigour from the 300 metres, particularly in the final 75 metres. Essington started $1.75 favourite in the 1200-metre feature while Bold Glance eased to $7.50.
Stewards also questioned Bold Glance?s trainer Norm Hilton as well as Fletcher who flew to Brisbane to attend the inquiry.
Chief steward Wade Birch tendered evidence from corporate bookmakers and betting agency Betfair.
The inquiry was told El-Issa was a friend of Fletcher who backed Essington to win $24,000 with corporate bookmakers and Betfair.
Written evidence was also tendered by Betfair which showed Fletcher had also laid Bold Glance at a risk of more than $20,000.
?We spoke on the telephone with Betfair?s Matt Clark and also had written evidence from him which showed Steve Fletcher had laid Bold Glance at a risk of over $20,000,? Birch said.
?He also backed Essington to win $24,000 with corporate bookies and with Betfair.
Fletcher produced evidence to the inquiry which showed his betting activities were consistent with his previous gambling history.
The inquiry was adjourned until Monday week to allow Fletcher time to produce his phone records.
Hilton, who plans to take Bold Glance and stablemate Poor Judge to Sydney for the autumn, has denied any wrongdoing.
Should be a lot more of this in all states.
Will be interesting to see what happens on appeal. A lot of the industry in Qld are dirty on the number of appeals which have overturned convictions lately.
that was an absolute disgrace...the most blatant thing ive ever seen!
Glad the bloke got 2 years.......probably not enough in my book, should have been fined the winning stake and paid it to the owner.

Blind Freddy can see he was waiting for the other horse.
Can't help himself that kid.
Jockey Bobby El-Issa has been denied a stay of proceedings by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) pending his appeal against a two-year disqualification.
In a rare decision handed down on Tuesday, QCAT refused El-Issa's application for a stay of proceedings pending his appeal on April 18.
El-Issa was disqualified for two years over his handling of Toowoomba sprinter Bold Glance in the $100,000 Falvelon Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on February 26.
Stewards found El-Issa guilty of not giving Bold Glance every chance when he was runner-up to Essington.
They alleged El-Issa did not ride Bold Glance with his usual vigour in the final 200 metres when overhauled by the heavily-backed Essington.
El-Issa, 34, has a long history of run-ins with officialdom in NSW and Queensland for various offences including a nine-month ban in 2006 for testing positive to cocaine.
The ban on El-Issa came just a day after he won the Listed Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba on Lucky Leak.

High profile punter Steve Fletcher has been found guilty by Racing Queensland stewards of having prior knowledge that "Bold Glance was not allowed to run on its merits? in a race at Eagle Farm in February.
Stewards resumed the inquiry into Fletcher's betting on the race on Wednesday and found the punter "is a close associate of Bold Glance's jockey Bobby El-Issa? who, was recently disqualified for two years over the matter.
In the stewards evidence it was revealed that Fletcher wagered to win on the eventual race winner Essington and laid Bold Glance on Betfair.
Stewards produced in evidence, a "correlation identified by Betfair between Fletcher's lay bets and El-Issa's rides?.
"In the stewards opinion the Betfair evidence leads to a strong inference that Mr Fletcher is in receipt of information from jockey El-Issa as to the prospects of specific mounts and, in particular, that he had the benefit of information from jockey El-Issa that Bold Glance would not try to defeat Essington,? the stewards report read.
Stewards have sought Fletcher's submissions in respect to the penalty that may be applied taking into account the powers to punish that are provided for under AR196(1) which reads:
"Subject to subrule(2) of this Rule any person or body authorized by the Rules to penalize any person may, unless the contrary is provided, do so by disqualification, suspension, reprimand, or fine not exceeding $75,000. Provided that a disqualification or suspension may be supplemented by a fine.?
