Interesting article in todays paper citing city stakemoney about to receive another cut
Interesting that Lex Piper is blaming owners for betting with corporates maybe Perth Racing should be thinking about getting some money out of them via sponsorship like every other major club in Australia has

If the turnover is down then stakes will suffer, its not rocket science. The major cause of the decline in turnover is people are betting with alternative players that don't pay their way.
I agree with reducing the bigger races. take sydney for example.. sure our general G1's here are only worth between 300-500k (apart from the slippers/bmw's etc) and the doncaster is worth less but that has enabled racingnsw/stc/ajc to keep the run of the mill saturday prizemoney at 70k a race which keeps everyone afloat. without the average races to keep us going the other 10 months of the year there can be no top class ones.
wonder why ?
PERTH RACING should be at the forefront to having this Centrebet contract torn up or atleast never/ever renewed
whatever, you can't expect the punters to pay more for an inferior product.
plus it's a great big world out there nowadays and people can bet on horses(or whatever) wherever they like.
wa can't stand up on its own because it's not a popular product in general.
i like it because it's isolated, but the product itself, if it was good enough would be self sustaining.
punters don't care how high the stake is(like it not), they just care if they can pick the winner, quinella or whatever.
so it comes down to the simple point of what do the punters owe wa racing, and i think the answer is........nothing.
the landscape of racing has changed so much in the last 10 years its not funny
I notice Mr Piper only took swipe at 'owners' who bet corporate.
The industry and punters have been squealing for over a year now as to how inferior the TAB and player offering is compared to the rest of the market.
Here, I'll sell you this bruised apple......its WA grown and i expect you to buy it because you're supporting our apple growers, even though the ones from Darwin are twice as big, nice and juicy and the same price, if not cheaper..........
Good luck is all I can say.
Can I keep my $50k ? ;)
(Edit : and when they will take my bet)
WA needs night racing, but will the powers that be invest more money into facilities if the return is falling due to the corporates.
Ask yourself, would you invest in a venture for someone elses benefit ? Why would they do it ?
until that mindset changes - which it wont because RWWA are the controllers who also operate the TAB
then WA will never prosper
Corporates and Betting Echanges have so many advantages over our useless TAB its not funny - and they actually make you want to have a bet instead of being a turnoff
So blaming owners for betting with the corporates doesnt wash.
Rather than the bookies paying the clubs direct though, they now pay to RWWA, who distributes back to the clubs.
In that respect, its hard for the clubs to see exactly who is contributing towards the funding, which is why a lot of them a crying that corporates are not contributing.
As a bookie, I am now paying more "tax" than I ever have, but at the same time, because the clubs cant "see" what my contribution is, some of them have actually increased stand fees to compensate for what they "think" they are no longer receiving.
Personally, I am happy to be paying my way in the indsustry as a bookie, but when i am punting and you ask me to take 2 points under with Player, and have my $500 bet limited to $45.45 and in between, wind the price off, all the time using Centrebet to manage your book.......thats where i draw the line!
the corporates are causing issues big time. but the problems here are self made.
No racing product in Australia can support itself it relies on betting on all the product.
the WA industry is going strong it is certain sections bringing it down.
1. A .mobi website or iPhone/Android app for TABozbet
2. Unique and competitive Fixed Odds (not a carbon copy of an NT company)
3. More than 7 days of betting history for account holders
4. Betting available through the Foxtel (like over east)
5. Win/Place (Parlayformula) betting in allups
These are just some of the things we in WA don't get (correct me if I'm wrong) - it's simple, fix your product, then the rewards will come!
Yes they affect pool size and turnover therefore the industry, but half the blame is self inflicted.
The winterbottom being 750k is a joke it is completely unsustainable if its not drawing the horses or crowd (did neither last yr)
The Railway at 1 million is also questionable.
And lets not forget the international jockeys day was a wallet burner for perth racing. flying all the jocks over and (looking after them ) for there services did not pay dividends. the numbers at the gate were terrible...
All these occured in the past few months.... no wonder were going to be offering a chicken and chips from red rooster for the winner of the
2013 Perth cup
Sack whoever is responsible for organising the "entertainment" on the big days and there is a potential windfall of another $500k if they get someone who is in touch with what gets people thru the gates
It is 10% now and should come into line with the jockeys , who put their lives on the line everytime they go out there and thats not taking into account that most of them are wasting to make the weights .
I hear that a lot of trainers are increasing the costs to owners , well then they can cop some of the hit .
All the owners that bet locally only get to race for $50k and the ones that have betfair and e/s corporate accounts can only race for $45k.
Surely that is the answer. It will be sooooo easy to administer :P
