Millsy on 6PR has had a few calls this morning reporting about 3 or 4 horses that have escaped from somewhere and running down Great Eastern Hway.
1 got hit and killed in a front on crash with a small van near the Tonkin Hway intersection.
Not good news.

    Remaining horses have been caught.
Apparently they were being walked to Ascot and got spooked.
Horse was trained by a trainer , who also pre-trains, according to a stablehand called Monica who was just on.

The practise of leading 2 horses to the track will come to a crashing halt now. remember the days when a rider would lead a horse on each side.

Very unfortunate accident but will bring a lot of pressure now from Police an City of Belmont.

Not supposed to be leading two at a time now anyway.

This morning there were 2 separate incidences where horses got away from the handlers, leading 2 at once.
The first lot were gathered up quickly, luckily.
One the second instance 3 from 4 horses getting led X2 escaped after being spooked from horses jumping out of the walk in/ stand in gates. (another problem were they are located IMO)
Hardly a day goes by with out this happening, only on this occasion there was damage to property and nearly a human casualty, the driver of the car that was hit. Not to mention the poor bloody horse casualty.
There is too much traffic and population now for Ascot to be as open as it is.
The Gt Eastern Highway is only one block from the track gates and there is a direct line of sight to the traffic lights from one set of gates

Unfortunately it was only going to take time for this to occur, a number of close calls over the years.

Would a fence/electronic gate system be so far from practical? Give each stablehand/jockey/trainer a buzzer and the gates only remain open for 30 seconds then close automatically.

LLS, very few actually escape from the track it self, a minor gate change will stop all from getting away.
The main problem stems from horses being led to and from the track x2.
Also the narrow, inadequate and shockingly maintained horse path is a contributing factor, although they were out of that area in this case.

There is no hope of any money or anything being done by RWWA or Belmont City Council. The problem is defiantely as GEN put it trainers allowing their staff to lead or ride two at a time, the trainrs are putting everyone at risk and this issue needs addressig now!

Pretty easy solution to both - start issuing fines to those that are doing it.
    1. Stops them doing it, or
    2. Raises some revenue to make other fixes

So could the owners of the dead horse sue the trainer for negligence?

how many cats or dogs are runover ,this happens very seldom due to clubs and council lack of funds and knowledge.
as for walking 2 horses some horses actually walk to the track better with there mate.
  • is there a rule about walking 2 horses together?

and as Agro says most walk quieter when walked with another horse, not sure but I think today might have been 1 ridden and 1 walked with at least 1 of the incidents

Yes, I read it only recently.
Trying to find it again now.

(and if not, pretty easy to make one, and then enforce it)
  • In recent weeks there have been quite a few trucks that go down Mathieson Rd, without a care in the world about horses, they just refuse to slow down.

club and council lack of funds and knowledge.
need more signs ,speed limit 30ks between 3.30/9.00am as some people dont understand horses .painted on mathieson road itself 40 ks only
a horse with spider recently escaped GP not a scratch on the horse went a fair dist.
happend in Adelaide with taxi and horse .

It doesn't matter how experienced a person is......two horses to one person is a recipe for disaster.....Its been going on far too long and needs to be rectified in my opinion.
I have seen some very good horseman lose horses due to some moron flying down Mathieson Road...not the first and wont be the last time this sort of thing happens.

    cheers

has been brought up over and over again, but it wont change, they should not be aloud to walk two horses at once, it is one of the most stupid things that can be done with a thoroughbred and it happens every day at the farm that is Ascot!! Poor Sugar, a little Gem she was!!

We had a bad truck problem a while ago in Pinjarra where we would try and get our pacers across the road to the track or down the road to the bush and had to deal with trucks speeding through a 60km zone significantally quicker! so many horses spooking and backing into fences and really suprised something hasn't happened down here but luckily there's not as much traffic here as Gt Eastern Hwy.

I remember something similar happening here in Sydney when a couple of Gai's horses escaped from a stable hand who was walking them. They ended up landing on and crushing a car with two women inside. Can't remember the fate of the horses, but it ended up in the courts with the women seeking damages.

I'm pretty sure you'll find its actually the owner of any horse that causes damage to other's property, or causes an accident that is liable up to a sum of 2 mill. So I feel sorry for the owner of that poor filly, - double whammy, losing a good horse AND being liable! especially when it's the trainer who should carry the blame...We had a good horse go through the rails and injure 3 legs bursting out of a less than adequate yard, and were told - "Thats horses for you..." $6000 and 6 months later, and we still don't know the outcome yet..
Once again, the owners/breeders swallow all the pills.
  • do you have a case to back up the claim that the owner is liable?
