RWWA Stewards today received an endoscopic report following a Veterinary examination of FAMOUS ROMAN after that horse won Race 6, the WAROA ?Lee Steere Stakes over 1400m at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 6 November 2010.
As stated in the Stewards Report on the day, FAMOUS ROMAN was found to have blood from both nostrils following the race. Trainer Mr J. Taylor was of the opinion that this occurrence may have been caused by FAMOUS ROMAN sustaining an injury to its head area whilst being transported to the racecourse.
The endoscopic report stated that blood was found in the trachea. A Veterinary examination of FAMOUS ROMAN prior to it leaving Ascot Racecourse on the day of the race revealed it to have a mild to moderate amount of blood present in both nostrils without any evidence of external trauma to account for its presence.
After consideration of the relevant Veterinary reports and related Australian Rules of Racing, Stewards deemed FAMOUS ROMAN to have suffered an exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage and therefore Trainer Mr J. Taylor was advised that the horse would now suffer the disabilities of ARR.53A(4), which states:
A horse which has in the opinion of the Stewards suffered an attack of bleeding shall not without permission of the Stewards-
(a)be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter;
(b)start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000m in the presence of a Steward.

The eastern states contingent of horses bound for the Festival of Perth Racing has been delayed.
The team of seven gallopers were due to arrive in Perth on Tuesday but circumstances beyond the control of Australian Air Transport have meant the plane won?t leave Melbourne until Wednesday.
Booked to travel to Perth on Wednesday are last year?s Festival star Sniper?s Bullet, Salinger Stakes winer Whitefriars, Black Piranha, Triple Honour, Patinack Farm trio Gathering, Trusting and Hour of Peril.
Moonee Valley specialist True Persuasion is booked to fly to Perth next week for the $750,000 Group II Winterbottom Stakes.
It will be interesting to see what unfolds out of all this.
Famous Roman and Colour Correct appeared WA's best chances to stave off the interstate invasion for the $1 million feature, spearheaded by reigning champion Sniper's Bullet, who will be one of several stars arriving in Perth tomorrow on a charter flight.
Racing and Wagering WA stewards yesterday barred Famous Roman from racing for a mandatory three months when they ruled the six-year-old had suffered a bleeding attack when winning the WAROA-Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) last Saturday.
RWWA veterinary surgeons found Famous Roman had mild to moderate bleeding in both nostrils and had an elevated heartbeat at 130 beats per minute between 15 to 20 minutes after the race.
Taylor claimed Famous Roman had struck his head on a bar in the roof of his horse truck after becoming agitated when stablemate Idyllic Prince was unloaded before him last Saturday.
Taylor admitted he had erred in not reporting the incident to stewards before the Lee Steere and will appeal the ruling in a bid to have Famous Roman run in the Group 1 mile on November 20. But he slammed stewards for ignoring what he said was pivotal evidence from an endoscopic report by the Ascot Veterinary Hospital on Saturday, which pointed to the bleeding being caused by a trauma to the horse's sinuses and not flowing from his trachea or lungs.
Taylor said stewards also refused his request to have Famous Roman trial at Belmont Park next Monday and have a second scope performed.
"The report said there was no blood in the right or left sinuses and a head trauma was the likely origin of the blood in the nostrils," said Taylor, who added that the Danetime entire had pulled up superbly.
"The endoscope does not support a haemorrhage from the trachea or lung. There is no provision in the rules to allow a horse to trial again and have another endoscope done.
"The stewards have taken the word of their own vets, who acted on their observations and took no notice of the endoscope report.
"We have a horse running in a $1 million race and the stewards ban him when there is strong evidence to say he did not suffer a bleeding attack."
Chief racing steward Brad Lewis said stewards deemed Famous Roman had bled because there was no membrane damage or signs of external evidence of trauma to Famous Roman's head. He said the rule did not place importance on the quantity of the bleeding.
"IT'S JUDGEMENT DAY (NZ) (Hayley Diener) - Fractious in the barriers prior to the start. Lay outwards
at the 50m. Returned with a laceration in the off side nostril and blood from both nostrils. A
subsequent endoscopic examination conducted off course revealed the gelding to have an area of
mucosa damage and linear laceration to the off nostril and a similar smaller area of sub-mucosal
haemorrhage in the near side nostril which is consistent with the gelding having sustained external
trauma. Significantly there was no blood evident in the trachea and the gelding?s post race recovery
was within normal limits. In light of this report, Stewards acting under the provision of ARR.53A(1) did
not record the gelding as having bled and no embargo was placed on it".
The difference as I see it from what has been reported is that Famous Roman had an elevated heart rate whilst IJD did not and vets found no evidence of trauma to the nasal membranes or externally on Famous Roman.
IJD had a laceration and sub mucosal haemorrhage.
I'm not sure what the protocols are but in this case I think it would have been prudent for the raceclub vets to do an endoscopy asap. For this horse and connections there was too much at stake. There should be no room for conjecture in this case.

It looks as though the endoscopy that was meant to save Famous Roman has in fact sunk his Railway prep.
all very confusing
stewards saying blood in trachea - Taylor vets saying no
Hope it hasnt for Jim case, it was a huge run and would have it one of the top 4 selections for the Railway.
